  1. Isn't it interesting how on-line and CD dictionaries have lessened the need to know the alphabet. Now a knowledge of the Thai keyboard is starting to become prominent. Alternatively, buy a dictionary with alphabetic thumb-tabs or the alphabet list along the side.

I couldn't agree more David. After many years of trying I still get lost with the 'alphabetical' order used in modern dictionaries and the actual (numeric) position of the consonant in the 'alphabet'.

Thank you Sathienpong for placing an index inside the front cover!!!

  2. To settle this you might google "น้ำปะปา" if thai script works on this page regarding Thailand. So yes, no R in the word of course.

    Sorry, Goski,

That's a common spelling error even for Thai folks. The correct spelling is น้ำประปา with the 'r'

    cheers

  3. Can anyone recommend a quiet beach in Koh Samet? I am looking for secluded with palm trees and a beautiful clear ocean? Or on any other island, but no further away from Bangkok.

If you know of the right beach, how about accommodation? Best bungalows? between 500-1000 baht?

All your help is appreciated. Thanks.

Google Koh Man Nok...great little island but might be a few naturists on the beach

    Don't forget the sun-block :o:D

  4. does anyone know were the chaingrai hash house harriers can buy

graphic designed T shirts in chaingrai

    Hi Soap,

Yes, try about 100 metres east of the 5 yak/Mengraimaharach Monument as if heading out to Wiang Chai (the back way), it's on the right hand side. Sorry can't remember the name apart from the fact that it starts with a 'T'. They have printed both T shirts and Polo shirts for us and did a great job too.

They have a graphic artist there who can help with a design too. Great prices if you buy in significant numbers.

    On on

For example, if I [do not] go to exercise my right to vote, I will not be able to work until the next time there is an election. This is all I have to tell you. Let's talk by telephone again, o.k.? Love you always.

    1. Note I believe that กงสุน is misspelled it should be กงสุล.

    2. "ถ้าตัวเองไปใช้" – I think this should be "ถ้าตัวเองไม่ใช้"

    3. It is not clear what "เล่นด้ว" means. Is this slang or teen talk for "get together"?

    David,

The phrase จะ โทรไปเล่นด้วย is saying, " will phone [you] for a chat (i.e. for fun เล่น)

  6. Does anyone have recommendations for stores selling Persian or Indian rugs of high quality?

I have a friend who is visiting that thinks they would be cheaper here than the US. Do you think this is true?

There's a shop on the right in the Soi (33/1) that has Villa Supermarket on its corner in Sukhumvit.

    Not cheap though.

  7. Hi! Hope it is the right place for my question..

I will have regular cargo from Nongkhai to Surathani, not a lot, not worth to hire a truck...

Shipping ny train is a cheap and quick solution BUT: Info from Thai Railway is that I will have to pick up the cargo in BKK train station and bring to the train to Surathani by myself. I stay in Koh Samui and I cannot do this nonsense...

Maybe somebody can share experiences or advice me how to let sb bring my cargo to the second train...

The Intercity Bus service is much more convenient. You can ask at your local Bor Kor Sor (Bust Station) and they will give you a rate for delivery to Suratฯ You or your customer will have to collect from the Bus Station there though.

I find the service very efficient (yes, even here!!!) and not expensive at all

    Cheers

  8. Hi all!

I was wondering whether any of you learned souls would be able to recommend a reputable service centre to visit with my honda sonic.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. I live on Sukhumvit 71 and know there's a lot a bike shops located in this corner of town, just not sure which one to choose.

    Thanks in advance...

    Hi,

My choice would always be Red Baron on Sukhaphibal 1 Road leading from Lam Salee Junction out towards Minburi.

Their number is 02 729 4131 ask for Khun Somporn. If memory serves me (which it often doesn't nowadays) they close one day a week which I think is Wednesday.

    Happy miles and big smiles

  9. Great translation Khun Yoot,

Not picking holes, just a clarification...

It is perhaps worth pointing out though that Witholding tax ภาษีหัก ณ ที่จ่าย applies to many contracts too. In particular when a 'service' is provided it is the responsibility of the 'employer' to deduct a sum of witholding tax from the payment due to the 'employee' and to issue a certificate in confirmation of the deduction. This applies to both individuals and to other juristic entities (companies). Generally this is calculated at the rate of 3% unless (I believe) it is a transport contract which requires the deduction of 5%

  10. Try the area around the Victory Monument particularly on the western side.

There are a number of medical supply companies in that area.

Failing that about 1Km (?) along Phalyothin Road from Victory Monument you will find Phayathai II Hospital, there is a medical supplies firm immediately in front of it

    Hope this help you

  11. G'day y'all

Looking for some recommendations for a resort and/or guest house somewhere between Tha Thon and DOi Mae Salong.

Anyone know of a good one, just a clean bed, a hot shower and cold beer and good food is all that the specification dictates. Budget might be between 1 & 2 K baht/night. Might need as many as 12 rooms too.

    Any recommendations gratefully received.

    Cheers

  12. Hi all,

I'm looking for hotels, resorts or guest houses around chiang dao/fang

We are planning a long cycling trip from Chiang Mai heading more or less North-East to Chiang rai via route 107 etc. and will need an overnight in that area.

Ideally it would be around 120-140Km by road from Chiang Mai, our start point. A good budget might be between 1 & 2 k

Many thanks in advance to anyone living in the area that can provide some recommendations.

  13. Whats on the list of things to do for children's day?

    Recommendations for avoiding the crowds??

Heard something about a motorcycle convoy donating teddy bears to needy children at a school somewhere in CM

Check out North Comets for details I guess.

Nothing much by way of 'entertainment' though out of respect to HRH.

  14. My favourite route is to miss the capital altogether by using this route:

Leave K'buri and head east on ??? there's a turning not far away that leads to Don Tum, from Don Tum you go to Lad Lum Keaw, and direct into pathumthani or round the western ringroad to the Saraburi road. From there its a simple straight line along the eastern ringroad to the new airport.

For at least the first 60% of the trip the roads are only single carriageway so be careful especially if driving at night

    Bon voyage

    AjarnP

p.s. it used to get very potholed during the rains years ago but I don't know about now :o

  15. I've been thinking the same thing, you might want to try a local church.

My bf tells me that if we put them in the recyle clothing bins, people will come to collect it.

I'm sure that Father Joe and his Klong Toey slum foundation/charity (Google 'Father Joe) can make great use of all donations. Failing that (and assuming that you are disposing of ladies clothing. There is the Aids Foundation and/or even the womens prison on Changwattana Road.

Thanks so much for the generous thought of donating too

    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

  17. Think some of the 'private' clinics may be guilty of advising work not really needed.

Used most of them in the area and finally settled at Bangkok Nursing Home (BNH HOSPITAL) Dental department.

One of the lady dentists is a stunner too :o:D

  18. Suggest that you start looking on the East side of town. Good building plots of all sizes and much, much cheaper than West side. Most come with proper title deeds too.

A good plot with Chanod should not cost any more than 60 - 100K / Rai

PM if you need specific locations.

    Hi,

It's very difficult to tell from your script i.e. without hearing the actual accent used in speaking. IMO, the phrases you have posted are quite prevalent in the outer reaches and would apply in both the Isarn and Northern parts of the country.

A quick "rule of thumb" that I tend to use is that if the ร is pronounced more as a 'H' than an 'R' or an 'L' then this would indicate the speaker as being from the North. Chiang Rai for example is pronounced locally as 'Jiang Hai'. I believe that this is a throwback from the original Lanna language pronunciation too.

Hopefully this time the brain is in gear, thanks David

By the way, I find the ยิ่งฯ... to be much more colloquial (which is what I intended) than ยิ่งมาก... but thanks for that one too

  22. na.jpg

I think it is written as นอ ใน ภาษาไทย, not 100% sure about that though. It appears to be a question particle at the end of ลาว questions. Is anyone familiar with นอ from ภาษาลาว and is it similar to นะ in ภาษาไทย?

For example, if I typed คุณอยู่บ่นอ to mean "Are you there?", would คนไทย understand it?

คนไทย easily understand คุณอยู่ไหมครับ with no problem, but I am just curious if this variation would also be understood as it does contain some ภาษาลาว

If it is Lao it is almost sure to be บอ Bor not นอ Nor and corresponds more to เปลา Plao roughly translated as 'or what' as in กินข้าวหรือเปลา 'have you eaten or what?'

  23. I'm not suggesting you do this but, if you don't tell them, providing you don't have a problem, how will they know you've been to Bangkok on it? :o

Thats the thing, if it was policy / against there contract then sure no problem, bangkok here i come, but if the bangkok police are going to hassle me about it and possibly tow the vehicle off the road for being unregistered i am not sure it's worth the risk.

Absolutely DO NOT TRY IT!!! biking in Bangkok is less for amateurs than Pattaya is. The Police are especially on the ball at this time of year. The traffic laws are far too complicated, e.g. you can only use teh left-most lane. If you are farang you will be stopped, not might, not maybe, not if you do something wrong. YOU WILL BE STOPPED and they will hold the bike.

If you leave your passport as security.........it speaks for itself eh!!

    take the bus and enjoy
