  1. Old power clique suspected of being behind Bangkok bomb attacks: source

A security source at the Government House said the old power clique was behind the simultaneous bomb attacks in Bangkok.

The source from an intelligence agency said the intelligence agencies had learnt about the plan of the old clique to create disturbance toward the yearend.

The source said Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont was on the standby in Bangkok because he expected the attacks.

    Source: The Nation - 31 December 2006

Hard to believe the 'old power clique' is behind the bombings as it would be stupid and harm their possible future political plans immensely.

And, how come the Government (PM Surayud) 'expected' these bombings ....? :o

If they know already who was behind the attacks within a few hours (and expected the attacks), why didn't they do something before it happened ?

    Odd and strange.

    LaoPo

    Like what LaopAo?

What could they have possibly done? More police? Army? call superman?

If you don't know WHERE the bombs have been planted theres nothing you can really do.I mean how do you stop someone dropping a grenade from a bridge? that could happen anywhere in the world.

This has been happening in the west/Isreal for a long time and the sad fact is it is near impossible to stop.Thailands military/police don't get anywhere near the same level of funding as say their western counterparts. If we can't stop these type of attacks how can we expect them to?

  2. quite odd if this was a muslim incident that the ksr area was not targeted. one, it has so many people. two it has throngs of isrealis. next, i find it curious that there does not appear to be any bombing in the south. third, it is further curious that a few months back taksin buddy was found w/ a 'bomb' on his way to ??? taksins house (or so taksin would like you to believe). finally, like bush&co this could be an excuse for junta to cling to power AND make it more palatable for financial markets to swallow.

i hope the authorities have enogh balls and intelligence to shake this out.

Yes maybe you have a point.

But these idiots are not stupid enough to actually target tourists, the KSR would have been attacked years ago if this were the case. The Thai military response would be incredibly brutal.Thats why they have not targeted tourists in the past(The canadian teacher in hat ya was in the wrong place at the wrong time)

Still,it really isn't clear who has done this.People shouldn't jump to conclusions.

  3. One of the best massage shops in CM is 'wow' massage across the road and a little up from the UN irish pub, right next to the pizza place.Run by a very friendly woman called June and her 3 cats :o.You know it must be a good shop when so many of the customers are farang ladies.

Becareful though, when she says strong, she really means it!

  4. Peera Pharmacy ร้านขายยาพีระ is the name of the really nice woman's excellent pharmacy a few shops behind Black Canyon Coffee inside Thapae Gate. The service and prices are great.

Please tell all your friends about her.

    Power to the people! :o

Is this the place next to that camera shop (the one that destroys half of your pictures?) .If so i remeber going their back in April when a friend of mine had a nasty case of food posioning.I was in and out inless than 2 minutes with all the nessacary anti-biotics etc, never had to repeat myself or pretend to be taking a @@@@/being sick :D and if i remember rightly it only cost 65bht.

But im British,so I'll be doing my shopping at Boots...JK! :D

I agree with the OP,but i need mcdonalds to stay because i need somewhere to go when i get sick from thai food...and why doesn't <deleted> airport plaza have a mcdonalds??? Disgraceful! :D

  5. Your visa expires 12 months from date of issue - so if issued on 21 December 06 it will expire on 20 December 07. You can arrive on 19 December and still stay for the normal 90 days (until March 07). The visa is used to enter country - once you have a permitted to stay stamp the visa can expire with no effect (except you can not leave/return again using it).

Ohh I thought it expired 12 months after entry not 12 months after the date of of issue???

I was hoping for 12 months from my first entry,17th February 2007.Then another 3 months(visa exemption,3 x 30 days) taking me to 17th of may 2008.15 months. She told me that i would get 15 months.

If my visa starts on the date of issue,22nd january 2007.I am losing out on a 1 month aren't I?

  6. I applied for my mulitple entry Non-im B visa yesterday. This morning i recieved a phone call from the Royal Thai Consulate in Hull informing me that my appliacation had been successful.Great.

That was not the reason she was phoning though. She was phoning to ask whether i wanted my passport back tomorrow or in January. She said that it was my choice but i would get an extra month if i had it stamped and sent back in January?(she really wanted me to do it this way) I asked her how? She basically repeated would she had just said and i just accepted it and said thanks for the call.

Well what does she mean? Whats the difference in having your passport stamped on the 22nd December or the 22nd January? I fly to BKk on the 17th February, the visa runs out exactly 12 months later. So even if my passport is stamped on 22nd January ,I will still have to make my final visa run on the 17th december 2007.So???????????

I'm really trying to put 2 and 2 together here. But in all honesty im really confused by what she told me :o

  7. Lareina,

During the war of independance 90% plus of the settlers in north america were either English or welsh.German and Irish migration didn't really pick up till the late 1820s and 1840s respectively. My source is a book so i can't link it.But really, just take a look at the surnames of the most important Americans of the time.Heroes, leaders etc It kinda makes it obvoius.

    Entirely off topic ofcourse,sorry mods.

  8. "I term that I do not like is ‘African-American’, why? Your ancestors came from Africa maybe 200+ years ago, you do not have a connection with Africa, why can’t you just say American? I don’t see any of the descendents of the early settlers from England referring to themselves as ‘Anglo-American’."

Americans don't use the term anglo-american because it was the English they fought against to gain their independance.Ofcourse more than 90% of the settlers who fought against the crown were from where? England. But thats irrelevent. They fought against England, thats what matters.

Many Americans refer to their German,Irish,Italian,scotch-irish(which doesnt actually exist) heritage etc all the time.Theres nothing wrong with the term african-american unless ofcourse they want to be more specific. But i doubt they could..

Apart from that,i totally agree with your post.

Political correctness is a disease and it is ruining our societies.

  9. junkofdavid2,

You are generalising a bit by using the term 'asians' .Be more specific.Japanese, korean, fillipinos, thais, laotian etc etc

Asians from certain(poor) countries might have a hard time getting in certain western nations(not mine tho..the UK).Thats because they are poor and can't spend that much money and then there is the chance that they won't <deleted> leave! Those that have the money will be let in.There is just to much evidence showing us that rich asians can get into western nations with no trouble at all.For example, the Japanese. You know why? because they are rich, they will spend lots of money and then they will go home and maybe return for another holiday the next year.

Now farangs in thailand, ohh they don't spend any money at all.Just take take take where farangs are concerned.I didn't really spend upward of $9k of my own money this year in SEA.Tourism doesn't really account for for 10% (or more?) of Thailands GDP.... :o

Being serious, about wealthy asians walking into the west..

"CANBERRA, Australia (Reuters) -- Australia is hoping to lure WEALTHY ASIAN TOURISTS and other upmarket travellers with a major campaign to help its tourism industry overcome the fear of terrorism and effects of the SARS virus and Iraq war. "

Its pretty simple,if you have money to spend. Our Goverments will want you to come.If you don't.Some western goverments will be wary of you.

I can't help but feel this is just another asian rant, you know chip on the shoulder thing..ahem.Your not letting us in ,just because were oriental etc...

I have no doubt that western countries want "rich Asians" (okay Southeast Asians aside from Singapore) to come to your countries.

What I am talking about is the process which these rich Southeast Asians have to go through just to "prove" that they're "one of the few" rich ones.

Complaining about that? Nope. Just pointing out that this "process" is now similar to what Farangs have to go through starting January in order to also "prove" that they are "legit" farangs and not the "non-legit" farangs.

Lastly, I think you misunderstood the post a bit. Rich and poor Asians is different from rich and poor Asian countries.

In trying to lure, as you say, rich Asians, western countries relaxed rules on rich Asian countries such as, as you say, Japan. However, if you look at the visa application process which "rich Asians from poor Asian countries" have to go through, you will see that western countries are not luring these rich Asians at all (the rich Asians from poor Asian countries)

It does not matter if you are wealthy. What matters is where you are from. For example,if a wealthy Thai arrives at Heathrow. The first thing they will show at immigration/customs is what? their THAI passport. In otherwords their 'poor country' passport. The immigration offical has to do the right checks to make sure you really do have the money to live, travel and then eventually leave the UK.The 'poor' Japanese guy behind this Thai will not face the same delays because by the worlds standards he is exceptionally wealthy(even if by japanese standards he is poor) and the immigration offical will regonise this.

"Just pointing out that this "process" is now similar to what Farangs have to go through starting January in order to also "prove" that they are "legit" farangs and not the "non-legit" farangs."

The vast majority of Farang come from the worlds richest nations. The Thais have not got tougher to make sure that we have enough money. They already know we have enough money! What they want is the extra revenue ,imo.Generated by the purchase of visa's from embassies/consulates and maybe they also want less farang living inside Thailand. The latter is what riles many farang. They want our money but they don't want us... :D

So,no.Its not similar at all.Your original post is just rubbing salt in open wounds imo.

  10. Hi There,

Can anyone recommend apartments for rent in Chang Mai area, inside or outside the Old City is suitable.

If possible with Internet access in the room (ADSL).

Bangkoks got plenty but my groove is usually Chang Mai.

If any of the wise heads know anything the information would be much appreciated.

My monthly budget is 6000 - 10,000 Baht. Although i'll go over if needs must.

    Regards.

    JK

You absolutely do not need to spend that much in CM. I know of at least a few places where you can get in-room internet, one of which I live at myself. I'm pretty much in the center of town (not suburbs), near Central shopping mall. I pay 4,000 baht / mo. + utilities for a very nice room in a new apartment unit. We have a pool, exercise room, convenience store, laundry and a few cafes on-site. I have phone in-room, A/C, TV, fridge and other standard furnishings. Its safe and secure, with its own parking. ADSL is reasonable, 512K shared per floor, which doesn't end up too bad, at 300 baht per month. But you may need to find a proxy if you need certain ports to remain open.

I know of at least one other place as well. Email me directly if you want more information.

    Christian

Sounds great, what the area like? And the noise? the place sounds too good to be true! Good find mate!

With the internet thing, I find that most places internets slow down at 'peak times' ie 1700 - 2200 hrs which is when all the Ragnarok brats and school kids dive into the internet cafes.

You just have to try and work around the times thats all.

God,how many times those kids would come in and crash the internet cafe i always used.Always happens when i'm about to finish an email.. :o
