  1. Hello,

as an artist it can take minutes and years to complete one piece... so how does this "work" when residing in Thailand? I mean there is no base salary or anything, nor is there a company to work for, yet it is considered work when selling the artwork, right? What happens if the artwork gets sold, does the artist need to pay taxes, and if - how?

Also, what about people who live in Thailand and operate blogs or other ad revenue based websites, do they have to pay taxes on the income, and if - how?

I hope I posted this in the right forum... these question have been on my mind for years... :)

  2. Why should Google respond? Surely, if the International Courts have not ruled on the border, "cutting it in half" is the fairest thing. Maybe Thailand should ask for "land rent money" from Cambodia, for half of the Temple...... :)

Unbelievable! International Courts have not ruled but you have decided it is fair "cutting in half". What do we need International Courts for? We have your infinite wisdom. What is your opinion on the latest bank robberies? Please tell us what is fair! We're all waiting for the oracle to speak.

    don't feed the trolls...

  3. Maybe it has already been said, but what they REALLY REALLY need in Thailand are these clear bubbles on every pump with the cartwheel inside which spins when the gas is flowing, that way everyone can see what kind/color of gas is going into the tank.

  4. International diving warns all boats by the use of flags there are divers below. Boats by maritime law are supposed to avoid the areas marked by flags. So the questions are -

    1) Did the dive operator have the area flagged?

    2) Did the speed boat driver have a legitimate license?

    3) If the divers were outside an area - did the dive operator do anything to reverse the situation.

Right now it looks like a total disregard by the Thai side but I guess that will never be determined as the payoffs will ensure ongoing freedom to do what they want. Sad for the hacked divers to be sure but speed boats and people in the water is a recipe for disaster which the Thai Authorities need to take responsibility for. :)

Blame the Thais!!! It has to be a Thais fault!!! Thai Thai Thai...

Nice one... I understand, that Thai's have little value for human life and are in general not as "organized" when it comes to safety, rules and regulations - and/or do not stick to and enforce those that exist. However, with no knowledge of how, when and where (in terms of location in the water) this accident exactly happened, I find it inappropriate to directly point fingers at people. These guys could have just as well been where they should not have been. Why do people here on TV always come up with some crazy theories, based on stories they heard (probably in another TV thread)? Why can't we leave it at: R.I.P and some condolences?!

This will be the last time I waste my time reading all these posts filled with prejudiced crap. Next time I see a news alert I just go to a news site to read up on it. The comments in this forum make me more sad and sick than the actual news.

  5. I have friends who did in fact see the canadian first verbally, and then physically attack the driver!!

BUT consider the following..long i know but shows the facts.

I am the first to agree that violence is not always the way to solve a problem, but please ,all you expats consider what goes on in your own countries, they are not immune to these types of goings on at all. Most taxi and/or tuk-tuk drivers anywhere in the world are not exactly rocket scientists but most are good people, and it only takes a few bad apples to upset the works.

The difference is that in expats home countries these people are probably on a salary plus percent as income or they are owner drivers..The few bad apples there are either greedy and/or predatory in an bid to increse their take home pay.

In phuket only 20% are owner drivers, so the majority are leasees. These guys have to pay 500 baht dailey in the high season, and 300 baht in the low,[ and the low these days is probably at least 8 months long] to their collective employers..Who they are i can not find out yet, but no doubt they are in the upper end of society!and anonamous for their own protection.

They ,like any mafia around the world have underlings to do their menial tasks, such as finance collection, self protection, standovers, etc.Basically these upper enders are the very ones that some of you misguided expats think are the ones to appeal to to stop this rot. IMPOSSIBLE..They are not at all concerned.

What you are seeing is the tip of the iceburg [the drivers] .They are visible to us at all times, and sadly when one snaps due to the situation they are in regards finances in this quiet high season the sh--t hits the fan and ,well look at some of the outragious comments posted, unbelievable statements from some 'educated expats', quite embarressing some of them!

Anyway back to the root cause of all this; The drivers [scapegoats] are made the villain in all this.

Like i said ,high season..500 baht, low season 300 baht to be paid to the MAN. Come hel_l or high water this money MUST be paid.

They are given grace of 3 days of non pay ,then they get the visit.A beating, followed by the taking back of the tuk-tuk and basically told GO HOME and don't return..huge loss of face as well as loss of employment. Of course there is a queue of potential new drivers waiting to take his place to earn BIG MONEY [as they are told] and this cycle repeats and repeats.

And the uppers naturally want more and more tuk-tuks to provide more and more daily income...not a problem in their eyes.

Consider the sheer number of tuk-tuks now, compared to the lower number of fares, and you don't have to be Einstein to see that the drivers are stuggling to meet their financial obligations, after also paying running costs, it is near impossible to earn a basic living even now , let alone after Feb.

The consequence of all this is exactly what we see now!

When times get tough[er] a man will react, often violently in a bid to have at least some income.

This is the case in the whole TWO incidents so far regarding drivers over reacting!!

IMO this is going to get far, far more common an occurance as time goes on, as more and more drivers can not meet their obligations to the secretive bosses.....Desperate people often make the wrong decisions..thats human nature!!

I agree totally, If you want to get rid of a problem, you need to go to the source! I nearly gave up on TV, as it seems lately it is just full of ads and post from people who would be better off not having a computer IMHO. It's a delight to read something so well thought through! Thank you.

  6. My condolences to the family remaining.

The crossing in question doesn't have any barriers or lights!

It is the 2nd fatal accident on the same crossing within about 6 month as much as I know, the one before this one (that I know of) killed friends of mine.

It is a very dangerous crossing, as the road makes a 90 degree curve right before and after the crossing, and it is a badly maintained dirt road, so you really got to watch where you are driving, which again makes it difficult to concentrate on the railroad track that curves out of sight in one direction.

It is heavily used by motorbikes and cars, and really deserves barriers or at least some lights!

I wonder how many more people have do die in that crossing until they finally put a barrier there...

p.s. I will try to find the picture I had of it, it had a fender of a car hung up on the cross... it belonged to my friends car and I guess was supposed to be some sort of warning.

  7. What a joke to say they will continue if they are unable to overthrow the government... I think they are aiming for the trilogy: Showdown III - The return of the red shirts.

This country needs to grow up. I mean who can take Thai people really serious when they even need to be told at what time a day they are allowed to buy alcohol?!

There is two traits you need to have as a foreigner living here: A great sense of humor and tolerance towards their weird ways of doing things...

  8. Just wanted to complain about 7/11 wasting plastic too, but about 10 people already said the same thing.

They usually get those straws in my bag before I think to stop them, so I just put in on the counter. I know it get's thrown away, but at least they might start to ask (foreigners at least) if we want a straw for our half gallon of milk and liter of coke.

Never going to happen... 7-11 staff is in full auto pilot mode, only if they know you (and you have previously made them look stupid for giving you straws and plastic bags for everything) they might remember not to do so...

There should be a petition to tell 7-11 to stop telling their staff to give out plastic bags for advertising purpose, anything else is a drop in the ocean.

  9. The nation... so retarded... "oldest in living memory" ... What do they look through a book from fox about how to make their news more dramatic?

    Agreed.

I suppose if the headline has the word "Farang" in it, it must be considered more interesting and important than why Newin walked free or how the locals in Si Saket stoned the yellow shirts for inciting hatred and unrest against the cambodians...

<deleted>... why does every post always need to be hijacked for some yellow/red shirt remark?!

now I got to google the Saudi indecent... even though that's kinda also a hijack remark :D

p.s. now you can google better with bing :)

  10. Many of you may remember me from previous posts about my adventures in Thailand. In those posts I talked about some of the wonderful and great times that I have had in Thailand. I talked about the friends I made and the exciting adventures that seem to lend them self to me while in the land of smiles. I also talked about some of the bad things that happened to me and near me. Some of those experiences caused me to put a return visit to Thailand on hold. It turns out that if I had come I would have been stuck in Thailand at the Airport for an untold amount of time and that would have lead to an avalanche of problems here at home.

Earlier this year I decided that I would come back to Thailand and enjoy the company of the friends I made and explore more of Thailand and make some new friends. I was feeling eager to return and explore and enjoy the things that I have come to love about Thailand; the food, the shopping, the motor-bike taxis, the kindness of the people, the overall Thai style... I wanted that again. I also loved meeting visitors from all over the world who were vacationing in the land of smile.

With all the negative things happening there that I have read on this board as well as others, I have decided to move my holiday from October to December, but as the bad new continues, I have decided to cancel my holiday there altogether. I won't be visiting Thailand this year at all.

I hope and wish all the best for Thailand, its people and those who visit there.

So there you have it. If any of you wonder if all that is going on there has any effect of return visitors to Thailand, yes it does. It had an effect on me.

Ether you are a troll, or you were lying about the wonderful time you had, or you forgot what a wonderful time you had, or you are just TV brainwashed. Whatever it is, I can tell you that you've just made a really dumb decision. Thailand is and always will be a great place for a holiday and to live, if you can accept that Thailand is a sovereign country with it's own customs and traditions and most of all it's own mind set.

  11. I am an American Guy, I have lived in Thailand 5 years, Brittan 6 months, Spain a month and France a month, the British behavior while on holiday is outrageous. I fully understand the Spanish Government arresting them repeatedly, if not in bulk and deporting them, Drunk and fighting every night in the pubs, France too. There were bars in France where I couldn't get a drink until I showed my passport to prove I was not British. Thailand is a little further, we can hope only the somewhat more responsible Britts get that far from home, that they might not still be somewhat special, I have no doubt. Behave yourselves! English speakers around the world suffer the consequences of what U do on Holiday! :)

The worst behaviour i have seen in Thailand is fron US Navy guys off a boat in Pattaya. I was sitting with my 12 year old son waitng to go in and see a movie not bothering a soul when he was happy slapped from behind from one of these louts who was drunk this was at one o clock in the afternoon. Thai people including whay happened to be an off duty Thai police man wintnessed the beahviour and was through whatever channels were able to arrange for the SP to pick this guy up. Now he would have been taken back to ship and probably given a slap on the wrist. Really proves that everyone is capable of outragous behaviour.

Well said, I've heard a lot of stories of US Navy seaman going totally nuts in Thailand. I'd like to reply to the sentence " ....English speakers around the world suffer the consequences of what U do on Holiday!...." the following to the American Guy: Native English speakers around the world suffer the consequences of what U do on Invasions!

Good thing Thai people don't care about International News... :D

  12. I wonder why all these reports are for a single country, what happened to good journalism, where they dig out the same stats for lets say ALL European countries... I bet Thailand is pretty much the deadliest country for ANY European.

When I read the title in my email, I knew already this would become an interesting news thread where 90% of the people talk about Brits - not the actual news... so I prepared something in my head:

I don't give a shit where you come from, you're still an ass - or not - simple as that.

Some of the nicest people I know come from the UK, some of the worst do too. Same goes for pretty much any other country...

I would like to say "It's the tourists!", but honestly it is not. Some of the worst things that have happened here that I know of and that involved foreigners happened with expats - not tourists.

Tourists just get stupid, because they don't realize that Thais can smile at you while thinking you're a tard, and because tourists think they are "free" to do things they can't or wouldn't do at home...

    expats on the other hand...

I think most Expats really think they are better than Thais, that Thais are just a bunch of dumb monkeys and that they as the smart ones can do whatever they want. It's sad how little respect most Expats have for Thais while complaining that the Thais don't like them and make it hard for them to stay here (visas etc)... I think it sucks that people who come to Thailand to live here expect the country to lay down the red carpet and become like the country they are from. It's our choice to live here... leave if you don't like it.

  13. got a question that someone maybe able to answer... is there a statistics of drug use in Thailand?

I've heard people say that since pot has been made illegal (or the punishment for possession/dealing it extremely raised) more and more Thais started using chemical drugs like Jabba... is this true?

IMHO pot should be treated the same as cigarettes and alcohol, it's the only of the 3 that has never caused a death and it doesn't turn you into a complete fool when getting totally "pissed" from it. Tax it, restrict age usage like cigarettes or alcohol and stop calling it a drug...

  14. I just read the official statement form KP to this...

It is interesting to read that the couple was seated separately and when she got approached by officers he left. Not sure if that is true, but I give it a reason of a doubt.

What I find interesting is, that they claim they even changed clothing... this whole thing is so absurd... this could be the total truth and they knew they were onto them for the theft, and it could just as much be totally different people that look alike to the ones who stole the wallet and were caught on camera.

It is also interesting that KP's security people (not the airport's security) witnessed him dropping the wallet into a bin outside the gents bathroom. I am not sure whether this is just a big lie or the truth.

However, I do believe all the different reports about different scams going on in this airport, and it is a shame that this is allowed to happen. It really ruins the face of Thailand and hurts tourism.

  15. george

what do you think of the video shown this evening on channel 5 around 18:20 (bkk time) regarding the british couple who (lady) appeared to have dropped something into her purse?

perhaps, this was an exceptional case different from others who were wrongly accused?

it is something that we all need to reevaluate? right? or do you have another take on this?

If you read the first two posts, then you know that the police stopped them at the departure gate and searched their bags... TWICE. They found NOTHING STOLEN in their bags after searching them, still - they were detained, jailed and had to buy their freedom for 7,500 pounds.

Anyways, let's just assume this would have been a case of shop lifting, that does still not justify what is going on at King Power... what they are doing at the airport ruins the face of Thailand.

    It's like this:

1 happy person tells 5 people about his or her experience

1 unhappy person tells EVERYONE about his or her bad experience.

If Thailand doesn't start to treat foreigner with at least the same respect they treat each other (which is not much, in my opinion) then "bye bye" Thai tourism.

  16. Thanks for the Download site I almost tossed out the Camera till I Googled it and it led me here to old faithful Thaivisa :D

Same for me, about to bin it... unfortunately all links provided don't work anymore :)

  17. I am using Maxnet Premier package for 1090 baht since about 3 years now (2Mbit), after being totally disappointed with the indy packages.

As with any Internet line in Thailand there has been ups and downs, but I have moved houses 3 times as well and the line has been the same in every house, so I don't think I was "lucky" to have a good line. Many friends call me to see if I can access a certain website to find out if it is the website or their line that is the problem, as everyone knows I am almost always online. So far there has been only 2 (of over 20) people that I have recommended to get Maxnet Premier that did have a bad line, however ANY other line they had/got were even worse which makes me believe they just had physically bad lines (old broken cables).

Overall I can say from my experience that (in Hua Hin) Maxnet Premier is the best line you can get, I do a lot of downloading and it is stable at about 190kB/s 24h a day, also website load fast. The only other line I ever used that performed the same was the 2Mbit CAT line for 2600 Baht per month.

I feel sorry to hear people had bad experiences with Maxnet (Premier), still I wonder why I never read a message saying: "I used Maxnet Premier before, but now I use XYZ and they are so much better". :)

p.s. Maxnet has been having big problems with their DNS servers since a couple of months now, sometimes you have to click reload/refresh many times before the server is found... I suggest using http://www.opendns.com which is a free and VERY FAST dns service, it is easy to setup as well and they have step by step help with screenshots. Even if you do not use Maxnet, you may be surprised how much faster you can access websites.

  18. ...

looks more like good old kerosene or diesel fuel was used... :D

Also, the haphazard manner in which the stuff was just thrown together and piled around looks more suited for a weiner roast or outdoor picnic...

    30106069-01.jpg

    ...

OMG :D I can't believe they burned it like that, that's just insane... a lot will go AWOL for sure :)
