  1. Interesting thread. I can agree and disagree with many of the above posts. Yes, many, if not 90% of the indian tailors are complete shiate, but the rare 5-10% that are good, are really that good. I've read various good things about Rajawongse n Rajas (with no personal experience), but if they are getting satisfied clients through out the time, they must be doing SOMETHING right, correct?

On the other hand - I also use another indian tailor - however, he's slighly more tucked away in the soi than the above mentioned 2, which is maybe why I prefer him. Crown Tailors in soi 8, about 40 or so metres into the street does a great job of getting my clothes done right, and they way I want them to be done. There is no pressure to buy and you buy as you please. If you need some time, they won't have a guy hanging around you to disturb you. That's what I love about them. Oh - and none of those touts. Seriously. On the way to soi 8, I gotta walk past numerous stores and this annoys the living shits out of me.

  2. " I had a coupon for a free shirt here. It's pretty nice and tailored well, but the place overall is a bit pricier."

Pricier than free? I can't imagine that to be true.

Many posters have commented on the quality of materials, but the average person can't tell cotton, wool, silk, or cashmere from polyester.

Here's a hint...When burnt, a natural thread will turn to ash, and a polyester thread will melt. If you think you're getting a1 00% wool suit for 6000THB,

it's time to fire up your lighter.

I agree. If any of those stores are selling you 100% wool for 6000 THB, it's time to walk out. There is NO 100% wool suit that can be sold for less than 10k Baht. The fabric itself is too expensive to be sold at that price, let alone the making cost and the profit they want to make from your sale. From all those stores, I'd recommend you walk back to them, and cut out any store that tells you its 100% wool for that price. Oh and by the way, that 2000 THB suit, walk away, a FAR FAR FAR way away.

  3. I see above that several are recommending shops in which they have repeatedly tried to cheat me with fake polyester

infected fabrics. But thats probably OK, some people are happy with polyester in their clothes.

Not sure I'd follow in the wake of US presidents. When did US presidents start to appear well dressed?

Cannot really see the link between good taste and being president of US.

I'll offer OP one suggestion if you are interested in high quality clothes:

Next to Conrad Hotel on Wireless road there is a small shopping mall called All Season Place or Plaza,

on the 2nd floor there is a tailor shop by the name Dfine.

(this is easy walking distance from lower Sukh)

That shop offers some absolutely top notch fabrics, but is gonna cost you.

OP - you got about 10 choices - make time to visit all B)

  4. I do agree with some of the above posts. If presidents are happy, then they must be doing something right! OP - you have 2 rec's above in Raja's and Gulati's, here's a third rec for you to try out - Crown Tailors just inside of Sukhumvit soi 8. Been using them for years and years and always a satisfied customer. There you go - 3 recs for you to visit. Have a good one!

  5. Different stores have different fabrics and suit cuts. Some could be good but whether its suitable to your taste or not is what you have to go to their stores and see it for yourself. For me, I had a great slim fit suit custom made in Bangkok at Jhasper Fashion. Very pleased with their outstanding insights on tailoring suits and up to the mark service. Wonderful decent people.

Agree - what works for one, may not work for others. Even in this one page alone, there are at least 5 recommended stores here and I'm just about to add a 6th. What I'd suggest to do is for you to walk around to all these stores, as they can't be more than a 5 minute walk from each other. Walk in, browse around, talk to the guys working there, see their finished products, fabrics, etc, then make up a decision. You don't want to rush this! Give yourself plenty of time to decide where you want your clothes made. Anyways, the store I use regularly is Crown Tailors just inside of Sukhumvit Soi 8. Great service nor any pressure, thats why I Love them so much.

  6. Thanks for the replies.

What kind of prices are we talking here or is it if you have to ask you can't afford it?

    Guys

Tailors in Bangkok are truly a hit and miss. I would know. I live here. There are some rubbish tailors and some fantastic ones. It took me sometime to find myself a tailor that fit and catered to my needs too and once found - I never go anywhere else anymore.

Crown Tailors just inside of Sukhumvit soi 8. Mana - "the man in charge" should be able to help you out accordingly and trust me they have a crazy large variety. I had to stop them from showing me too many to stop myself from spending too much.

  7. well - first and foremost, the word of advice is that you should NOT fall for the too good to be true deals of 2 suits + 2 shirts + 2 pants all for $199.

Second of all - since you're there only for 3 days, be prepared to go back to the store at least a couple of times for the fittings!

Lastly, the store I'd recommend you to visit is in Sukhumvit soi 8 - Crown Tailors. They should be able to sort you out.

  8. honestly speaking..how about the likes of rajawongse? thought they were supposed to be excellent or smth..although i have never tried them out!

I have however been using Crown Tailors quite frequently over the years and have found them to continue to do a good job. Whats best is they know what they're doing and they don't want the money upfront ! So it's good that you get to fix what you want till you're completely happy! I duno..again..i don't know what an expert in a suit is, but what I get from them compared to what i've seen my friends get..i'm a very happy and loyal customer!!

  9. There are probably a million tailors in Bangkok. Half of them are run by idiots. Another half of the remaining sell you cashmere as well and as you narrow down the shops, there is probably only up to a dozen good places to get your clothes tailored in Bangkok. At least 6 of them were listed above and here is another one to add to your list:

Crown Tailors - located inside of sukhumvit soi 8. Suits usually go around 7-9 thousand. More expensive is also available and like many other posters have written..you get what you pay for. Ideally you need a couple of days for suits, I'd say 2-3 is a good minimum.

Now the best advice. Crown, Raja, Rajwonge and the rest on SUkhumvit are not located too far from one another. Walk around, spend about 30-45 min making up your mind, and have your suits done up from the place that suits you best..atmosphere, price, value for money, quality of fabric. Have fun while ure at it.

  10. Hi All,

Sorry to jump in here with my question but I didn't really want to start a new post on this.

My wife would like to have a Chinese style silk dress made and does not know who to turn to.

I'm sure you've seen those Chinese silk dresses before that are body hugging with a nice flower or dragon patern on silk.

Could anyone recommend a tailor in Bangkok for this? Most tailors in Bangkok cater for men and not for women.

Maybe we should look around for a tailor in China town?

We are looking for a tailor that will do a top quality job and the silk ofcourse should be of top quality.

We're happy to pay a fair amount for this.

Scammers do not need to reply, I SMELL THEM A MILE AWAY!

    Cheers :)

Ok this may or may not help you out, but CP dress makers are one of the best in the business regarding ladies dresses. They MAY be able to make what you want, or look at you with a completely puzzed look as to what you are speaking about. I'd suggest that if you're stuck and don't have any other solution..you should check them out! They only deal with ladies dresses and ladies clothing and most imporantly Thai/Chinese owned/origin so high chance there :-).

  11. Is going to a five star hotel and use their tailor an option, Somehow I think they have a reputation to keep high, or am I thinking too simple?

I would expect that being in a hotel, their prices would be ridiculously high compared to others in the market no?

  12. I am looking to have 3 plain white shirts (short sleeve) on my next visit as I usually stay in majestic Suites anyone have any idea of what the price would be??

    Hi,

Better ask them. It depends on the cotton and the number of shirts you order. I had six shirts made of two-ply cotton made last year but I can't tell how much they cost. Only asked for the price of the total package (overcoat, 3 suits and 6 shirts). Wasn't cheap but I was very satisfied.

As far as I have understood, the price for cutting & sewing is the same regardless of what fabric you choose. It's the fabric that makes one suit or shirt more expensive than the other. So it's better to choose a high quality fabric. Majestic Tailors have an extensive choice, so you'll certainly find something you like.

If you have enough time, you can have one shirt made first. Once it's finished, and if you like it, they can order more copies; these should be ready in considerably less time. Certainly now that there's a bust in tourism and tailoring. When I was in BKK last March, most tailor shops I passed were desperate for customers....

Oh yes, forgot to tell. From what I have read on this and other forums, many BKK tailors have quite a peculiar taste. Big shoulder paddings and so on. No such problem at Majestic. Asked for a slim European cut and they did not disappoint me. It makes a difference that these guys travel to Europe every year.

dabird, you've got it spot on regarding two things..HUGE shoulder pads in most stores and the bust in tourism and tailoring. Walking past so many stores, I was not only conversed with, but literally pulled over to walk into their store. Some got to the point that I was ready to break his face. They really can be a pain at times.

Anyways, in regards to a good store, I frequent Crown Tailors inside of Sukhumvit soi 8. They're hidden away in the soi a little, so at times, its a jewel and I don't have to get dragged in other dam_n stores while walkin to them :)

  13. I'm looking for a tailor in Chiangmai who'll make me a dinner jacket, trousers, cummerbund and a dress shirt - ie the full schbang. He should be good and have access to the best materials. Is there such a tailor in Chiangmai? If not, I would appreciate suggestions in Bangkok too.

As in the past, I've got some fab. stuff made at Crowns from all sorts of fabric ranges. I'm sure they stock some of the very best stuff too. They'll definitely be able to solve your clothing issues!

They're pretty much at the Nana Sky train station, just 20 seconds walk inside of Sukhumvit soi 8, Crown Tailors.

  14. Try Majestic Tailors, two or three doors away from Raja's. Near Soi 4. Excellent service and a good choice of fabrics.

As I've told many others before..all these shops are pretty much around the same area..maximum 7 minutes walk away from one another. Check them all out in terms of quality, price, service and make up a decision.

Another personal recommendation is Crown Tailors just inside of Sukhumvit soi 8. Again, walk around for yourself to see what you like!

  15. like a poster said above, this could turn into a long thread. and it will!

    You've already got about 5 choices up there..here's a 6th to add - Crown Tailors - sukhumvit soi 8.

I think, since all the shops are pretty much about 5 minutes walk from one another, you might as well spend an hour walking around to all the places and find out which shop you're most happy with! Or, choose two shops, and try both out to know which you like better for the next time :-).

  16. If i ever buy another one it'll be off the shelf as at least i know what im getting and can then take it to a tailor to get altered to fit.

That's an idea: buy a high-quality off-the-rack suit and get a tailor here to alter it so that it fits as well as a bespoke. Wonder if that would work.

This is a great idea if you are slender. Most men over 30 get a little beefier in the chest and waist so they buy an off the rack suit to fit their chest. The shoulders are then too wide, the length extends beyond the buttocks and most men don't know that a good sleeve length should show about 3/8" of shirt cuff. Therefore they end up looking like they are wearing their father's suit.

Siince narrowing the shoulders on an OTR suit is a bitch it's just easier to go bespoke or made to measure. My last BK bespoke suit really was a silk blend and fits me better than my purple label made to measure suits hands down and the quality is great. If I were a farang businessman in need of a few suits I would hop a flight to BK, have a nice holiday and get several decent fitting suits and shirts for the same price as one savile row suit. Just find a reputable suit maker and expect to pay at least 9,000-12,000 baht per suit and inspect the fabrics carefully.

At the end of the day, tailored clothes in Bangkok are a great deal. But very importantly about fabrics. Many tailors do infact lie about the fabrics so ask to burn the fabric. Very easy and simple! If its polyester - its plastic. If its wool, its a natural fibre. Before you buy and commit to the suit, "inspect" the fabric well by burning it!!

Many tailors in Bangkok do a good job. There have been at least half a dozen mentioned on this thread alone. Take your pick and you should be fine. If you're not happy when you first walk in, don't have anything made!!!

  17. I choose Rajas Suk 4, Bobby, like many many more, and they do a good job.

Just remember you get what you ask for, so make sure you stop them if they try to rush.

I'd be happy to recommend Crown Tailors in Sukhumvit soi 8. And also to give them time and to get your fittings done. This way you know before you walk out of the store that everything fits you and if not, voice your opinions out loud to the owners.

  18. Alternatively if yu don't want to take your clothes to the tailors because they charge alot, take it to one of the people sitting outside banks or on the roadside where they have a sewing machine and some scissors. They will gladly shorten your pants for you for about 40 baht!

  19. Another one of the suit shops on Sukhumvit, this one in sukhumvit soi 8, Crown Tailors.

Good quality, good threads and good service, keeps me their customer since a long while now.

  20. About 4 years, I bought a backpack in MBK. I bought it from a camping shop rather than a stall. It was truly cavernous, the bag not the shop! You could fit a tent, a sleeping bag, large binoculars, books and loads of clothes in it. The deal was it was fake, you knew it was fake and the vendor did not try to kid you otherwise. It had a silly brand name like Nooth Fart or All Pine Low. A bargain at 600 Baht. It fell apart after 18 months which was fine by me.

Fast forward about 2 years. The camping shop has gone. Now the vendors are using stalls. Now they are still selling fakes but they are trying to pretend they are real. Generally asking 2000 Baht for medium size backpacks. They'll come down a bit but not much.

So, if anyone can point me in the direction of a shop which sells really big fake backpacks at non-daft tourist prices, I'd be grateful.

Have you tried Platinum mall? They're currently where the locals are now headed for bargains. MBK seems to be aimed at tourists more then anything!

  21. Hi,

A new 20 plus storey Condo is about to be erected in front of our Building that will guarantee us at least 2 years of hel_l, noise ,dust and overall health risk, 7 days a week, 18 hours a day in this up market neighborhood, this building is in a very close proximity to our building, meters apart,

    A. What does the law says bout working 18 hours a day 7 days a week with respite even for the most sacred holidays?

    B. What can be done to legally or otherwise to curb this impending nuisance ?

To be completely honest, I dont think theres much you can do!
