  1. It's funny how any thai with an office job or a college education is suddenly "hi-so" in western eyes.

If you're looking for 18-21 years old, then you can trawl Ratchada Soi 4. A slighly older set will be at Soi 6 and also at the pubs (Inch, Baryan Tree) behind the Esplanade on Ratchada. Baryan Tree is especially interesting as it has an actual dance floor. RCA you'll get anywhere from 19-25ish. If you want to try out the suburban set and if you feel like a venture, then head out to Kaset-Navamin road, there's a bunch of pubs around there (specifically around the intersection with Ekkamai-Ramintra).

Also, for after-work, check out the Tawan Deang German Brewery on Rama 3. The thing is with "office ladies" going to a drink after work, usually they'll never go alone. Even hardly go with just a group of girls.....they'll usually have the token guy there or some other office guy colleagues. If you don't speak thai well, then it's really going to be a challenge for you.

Ekkamai and Thong Lor are my favorites....Santika, Desco and Weeza on Ekkamai, and there are a bunch on Thong Lor (some hidden on the side sois. Check out Cliq, Naleng (someone mentioned that one).

For after hours (when everyones already drunk and this is really your best time for random hookups) try Blur on Petchburi, and also there's some hotel with a basement bar...I forget the name, someone might mention in...Livingston, Rembrandt...argh can't remember on Sukhumvit Soi 20. This is like for 2:00am and onwards. These places are pretty much 95% thai.

  2. I think I might be getting some bad guidance from my lawyer based on what Sunbelt said above. Perhaps I should be switching to Sunbelt :o

    My situation:

    - I have a 1 year multi-entry Non-Imm "B" visa

    - I have a work permit

    - My company has the minimum capital requirements (2 million baht for each foreigner employed)

    - Every foreigner is paid above the minimum salary (50,000 baht per month)

    - The company has over 4 thai employees for every foreigner employed. Thai employees are all receiving well above the minimum 5,250 baht.

My 3 months is about to end, and I've been told that I CANNOT get an extension at immigration because:

Company's stated profit from LAST year (new company) is not sufficient to cover all employees salaries for a full year this year. Thus I'm told I have to make a visa run.

Is this true? I would much prefer to just get the extension at immigration of course.

  3. Makes a big difference if you're downloading from Intra-Thai sites as opposed to Inter-Thai. Also, I've noticed this happen on several occassions with True, whenever anyone starts up their connection, it really flies....however it seems to consistently slow down (in the case of several friends/colleagues) after about a week or so.

  4. I had a similar problem with a Dell notebook and a Netgear router. Funny enough, the problem seemed to be the WPA encryption. When I used WEP, no problems whatsoever. Try playing around with your encryption settings.

Probably could be fixed with a firmware or driver update, but it works now, and I'm not overly concerned with someone hacking the WEP as I use SSH and browser based encryption.

  5. Lately it's a bit more difficult to open an account (especially to get online banking) without a Non-B visa and work permit. Each branch is different though, so if you try one particular bank branch and get a no, worth trying another. Usually more westerners I know banks at either Kasikorn, Bangkok Bank or Siam Commercial.

  6. I have TOT and have not been able to access blogspot for a couple weeks now, however people I know that have TRUE and other ISPs have no problem. I think it's just TOT in particular who is blocking blogspot for some reason.

  7. I've had no problems connecting with Yahoo messenger. A few things to try:

    - Can you still log into your mail account? Check that, make sure your password didn't get snarked when you were in BKK.

    - Can you log into yahoo through something else other than Yahoo messenger? Try meebo.com, or trillian.

    - Play with the connection setting under the yahoo messenger preferences tab. Change your internet connection setting and home country.

  8. My picture quality is fine, but my sound is crazy. For some channels, I have to turn the volume way up to hear, and then I switch to the next channel, I get blasted out of my seat. Crazy.

Anyone know any pricing info on the DVR they are advertising?

  9. PKRV,

Look more closely at thailand's position in your post

    #3 Thailand: 0.312093 per 1,000 people

Zimbabwe(0.0491736 per 1,000 people), Mexico(0.0337938 per 1,000 people), Belarus(0.0321359 per 1,000 people) and Costa Rica(0.0313745 per 1,000 people) have a higher average, but a lower ranking.

    How can this be?

Serious doubts are raised about the validity of your source and the incorrect ranking of Thailand in 3rd place. Logically, Thailand would be ranked 7th and not 3rd.

    Pampal,

How do you figure .3 should be ranked below .04 and .03?

  10. You guys are funny, no matter what happens some people always find some way to link some complaint about Thailand to it. My gosh, if you're so negative, no wonder all you see is the bad in life.

    1) It wasn't just one link that was damaged. There are several cables that go through the affected area, and it's not about redundancy, it's just the limits of topography.

    2) There IS redundancy. There are only so many cables under the Pacific, and now since some are unusable, then everyone (China, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hong Kong) is loading onto the working paths.....THUS traffic is extremely high and there are going to be some connection problems.

    3) Give the engineers a couple days to get the load balancing worked out and things will be much improved.

Take a chill pill people, relax and don't go off the hilt firing off criticism when you don't know what you're talking about.

  11. I've received the surveys in my UBC bill. I also have a good friend in their marketing department at UBC. Fact is, VH1 was the bottom ranked and least favored music station that they offered, and MTV was just a bit above that. Channel V is by far the most popular. Customers that have been sending feedback to UBC were asking for more thai-centric music channels, so they added True Music and Ma Jung before. People have also been asking for more "educational" channels, so the other two Explore channels were added. The game channel was simply added as a way to promote gaming, and thus by extension broadband (cross-marketing).

This has been in the works long before the coyote issue.
