  1. It is common on certain brands of air conditioners to have a rubber bushing to the drainage pipe. I have experienced that these bushings crack and that usually results in huge water leakage in the way you describe.

What usually happens is the filters don’t get changed

they get dirty. The air gets forced around the edges and

the coil gets dirty. The dirt from the coil clogs up the drain

and it begins to leak. The pressure rises in the compressor

because no air is flowing over the inside coils

and the limit switch on top of the compressor goes if you

are lucky, if not the compressor goes. The rubber bushing

can crack and leak but it’s usually an easier repair.

Just keep the inside and outside coils clean. I clean mine

often and just spray them with household cleaner and

rinse. If you notice your AC not cooling dirty coils is

usually the problem. If you keep them clean you’ll

have years of trouble free use. An older unit or

an improperly installed unit may develop a refrigerant leak.

You can check for this by holding your hand over the fan

on the outside unit. If the air coming out it cool then you

are probably low on refrigerant. This can also cause

the inside coils to totally freeze up. If this happens turn

off the unit and let them thaw. Clean the coils and start

it again. If the air is still cool on the outside unit and you

hear the compressor running you are low on refrigerant.

  2. In case you decide to maintain it yourself here are some tips that might help

TURN OFF THE POWER TO THE UNIT INSIDE AND OUT!

If you follow the pipe out of the inside unit it is usually stopped up at the first bend.

Many times you can get to it with a coat hanger and then once you get it flowing

flush it out real good with a water hose. If it’s too far down for that you'll need a small

tank of compressed air and hold the nozzle flush against the inside pipe and turn on

the air. The blast of air should unstop it. Then flush thoroughly with water until the

water flows strong and clear outside. Check car or bicycle repair shops for the compressed air.

Clean the coils inside and out and wash or change the filter on the inside depending

on the type. Be careful not to damage the fins that surround the coils as you are cleaning them.

There are many types of household cleaning agents that can be sprayed on the coils and

left for a few minutes that will soften the dirt and allow it to be easily removed.

Check the coils once a month if the AC is used regularly. Hope this helps

  4. The total memberships equate to 2.5 billion baht in revenue, which has not all been declared in the company's annual financial statements. By law, Thai companies are permitted to spread income figures over a 10 year period, a practice which is stated in TPC's annual report (see graphic)

Mr Udom admitted that the company has been plagued with transparency problems, and some of its spending is now subject to investigation by the Office of the Auditor General.

The membership contract carries a clause that the company "reserves the right to change, revise, or withdraw the service without advance notice".

2.5 billion baht in revenue, which has not all been declared :D

    plagued with transparency problems :D

change, revise, or withdraw the service without advance notice :)

  5. Hi all, I recently broke my leg, and had the surgery done in Khon Kaen.

I'm back in Bangkok now. I bumped my leg yesterday and want to know of a good hospital that has a bone specialist and x-ray. And also the costs of having an x-ray done and the doctor look at it.

Has anyone user Rama 9 hospital? It's pretty close to where I live.

    Thanks.

Myself and several of my friends have been to Bumrungrad.

    Near Phloen Chit BTS

I believe they can help you with the x-rays.

Not the cheapest place in town. :)

The care I have witnessed has always been first class :D

  6. Just wait for the price increases later this year when they charge us for their "service improvements".

(Loosely translated as now providing something like the speeds they have been charging for for the last 5 years, but not actually supplying.)

And banks will probably slap yet another surcharge on ATMs for foreign card transactions because they are now "faster... bla bla"

    etc. etc. etc.

Faster Nid Noy..... :D Same Same but different .......price...:)

  7. i have just come back from kuala Lumpur, embassy no problem, even smiled which is a novelty these days.So i would advise going there,Air Asia out of Bangkok 3000 baht, just watch out for the taxi's the other side looks like they are trying to give the thai's a run for their money on the scams,But all in all as easy a trip as you could wish for.

Yes....the last time I was there 90% of the taxi's would not use the meter. :)

You could bargain on price after a while by getting to know the average fair from point to point.

  8. Thanks, Webfact! Went to the 3rd floor of Pantip yesterday. A store called WBC. They installed Windows 7, Excel, Word, NOD32 Antivirus, etc. Clean install and everything works great! Cost was 400B and it took them about 3 hours...OK, that was because this PC is soooo slow! But works great for only accessing the internet.

    Craig

Amazing that Windows 7 went in so smooth on a 2001 machine!

Don’t forget to download and install free online copies of Malware bytes, Ad-Aware Anniversary Edition and Avast Antivirus.

  9. A friend who shot my wedding did exactly that. Used the same manual settings for several hundred shots and they were all perfect. As we were in a room with a light coloured ceiling, he also pointed the flash gun at an angle towards the ceiling and the bounced light gave a nicely diffused effect.

    post-34854-1248128013_thumb.jpg

In almost all of my flash shots I don’t aim the flash directly at the subject.

This gives the image a very balanced light in the foreground and lets the

ambient light be all it can be. I shoot with the 580EXII and often put the

flash on manual and adjust the power of the flash to even out the light.

The angle of the flash is something you can experiment with also. You

can achieve a professional look with bounced light from a single flash.

  10. Starting in spring 2009, most of the major Thai banks began charging a 150 baht (about $4.40 U.S.) transaction fee for ATM machine cash withdrawals made using foreign (non-Thai bank) credit and debit cards, including VISA, MasterCard, JCB and others. That charge, reputed to be one of the highest among countries with banks that broadly charge such fees, is above and beyond any charges that may be imposed by a person's home bank for using their card overseas.

However, in Thailand, for expats and tourists alike, there remain (as of July 2009) several options for making ATM withdrawals in which no fee is charged by the Thai bank. The best options for that are as follows:

United Overseas Bank (UOB-blue color logo) is the most widely found bank among the group. They also have an English language web site for Thailand where you can search and locate their branch and ATM locations. Their ATMs accept VISA and MC cards. (Note: UOB is part of the Thai Bankers' Assn., which proposed and adopted the 150 baht fee for its members. So it's possible UOB will implement the fee at some point. But they have yet to do so, months after all the other major Thai banks did).

Government Savings Bank (GSB-pink and gold color logo) is not as widely located, but usually have a branch or ATM somewhere around each major area or city. Their web site is no help at all in English, other than showing their main office location and phone number. However, this TV thread previously has listed many of their locations in different areas.

AEON is the Thai branch of a Japanese credit card company. They also have a very good English language web site for Thailand that allows you to search for their offices and ATMs. They are the least widely located of the three, but tend to have ATMs in major shopping malls and centers. Often it's just a solo ATM stuck away in a corner somewhere in the mall, because they're not a bank per se like the others. But...their ATMs also take both VISA and MCs.

GSB ATMs are reported to sometimes give users an error message like "communication error" or such, and spit back your card, leading people to think their ATMs won't/don't accept foreign cards. That's not the case. They do accept VISA, but not MC. However, those errors usually mean it's just a temporary problem with that particular ATM or it may be out of cash (since they are more popular now among farang). Try another location or bank among those listed above.

One final note: there have been conflicting reports about the status of Bank of Ayudhya ATMs (yellow color logo). Some TV users report continuing to make fee-free ATM transactions, while others report being charged the 150 baht ATM fee. Bank of Ayudhya is a member of the Thai Bankers' Assn. that adopted the 150 baht fee. So your mileage may vary with BoA ATMs. However, one point that is not in dispute: Unlike others, Bank of Ayudhya sets its own (very low) exchange rate for ATM transactions using U.S. $ and Euro-denominated MasterCards. So it is best to avoid using MCs at BofA ATMs.

Excellent post. :) May it be elevated in rank to the Exalted Order of the Pinned. :D

  11. I guess the visa card have a chip on it and you can feel the numbers. The Thai version of a visa card really is not much use when you want to use it online.

Many of the Thai version debit cards with the visa/mastercard logo are for card present purchases only.

No internet purchases :). Bangkok Bank lets you make secure online purchases if you have their Be1st Visa Debit card.

It has extra security to reduce the risk of someone fraudulently using your card to make online purchases. :D

  12. I ran across a website that I like very much and have been using for a few weeks. You can try 15 or so free lessons and then subscribe to all the courses for $6.99 per month. It is at www.its4thai.com If you know of a better one, I would appreciate knowing about it. I am also looking for a list of the 1000 most frequently used English words with their Thai meanings. Any help there?

    Tom

its4thai.com is a decent program as Stuart has put in a lot of time and effort into making it easy to use.

As for knowing a better one... truthfully, it does not matter which method or program you use, only that you do.

    They all work.

For the top 1000... I couldn't stop at just 1000... but there is a course proposing to teach with just a handful of Thai words -->> http://www.letstalkthai.com.au/

  13. It looks like you put a lot of work in it up to this point. Just continue the

customization process by using CSS to really change the look and feel

of the basic site pages that Pbase offers. The Pbase forum has a lot of

info and tutorials. If you are like me you only have so much time for work

and photography and all things computer so immersing yourself in code

may get put on the back burner. Thanks for showing us what we Kan do :)

    with pbase. Nice work.

  14. Can anyone suggest me as i'm planning to send my 7 & 4 years old kids to Dream World.

I saw package tour for 1000 bht. each ( don't know yet about the kids though ) and which would be more

convenient for us of 4 family members ?? Thanks in advance.

Been to Dream World many times and it was a very enjoyable experience.

You can get there from the city center via the expressway in about 40 min.

(traffic allowing) Taxi meter will be about 320 baht with you paying the tolls.

The highlights are Snow Town where you can actually do some snow sledding.

A nice 4D movie ( costs extra ). A Sky lift that rides you over top of the entire

park. The haunted house and of course I love the roller coaster (see my photo)

There’s lots of food (KFC) and fun here for the kids with themed characters running

around to entertain them and the elephant ride is a must. Many other things to

do too numerous to mention. Wear some good shoes….lots of walking.

  15. Hi,

    Thanks for info.

About famous brand, is Daikin the best or just the most expensive ?

Mitsubishi as good as Daikin ?

    Thanks.

I bought a Sanyo and it’s been great. It’s a 9000 btu and I use it for cooling

one bedroom. THB 12,000 baht on sale. The best time to catch them on sale is

starting in Nov just after the rainy season ends and demand is lower.

The most important tip is to keep the filter and coils clean on the inside unit.

The filter on most wall mounts is washable and should be cleaned once a month

if used all the time. Also keep the coils clean on the outside unit.

If the coils on either unit get stopped up air can't flow around them it can cause

the compressor to stop working even on a new unit. Its usually the limit

switch on the compressor that goes out to protect the unit and is a simple fix

but the repairman may hit you up for a new compressor.......or even a unit.

Take your time when choosing the size. Downstairs small room 9000 btu is

fine. Upstairs room go for the 12000 btu.....generally I've found that a multi

unit approach to cool each room as needed is the best approach in Thailand

  16. So with the camera's going upwards now of 12 Mb, 16 or more............... simple question - why does one need so many MB 's ?

If you plan to enlarge or crop your picture you want a camera that produces more pixels.

If not, you can search for one with the features that are important to you and that is within your

budget. To me the glass in front of the camera is so00oo important. If you invest in a higher end

camera with "more megapixels" then be prepared to bite the bullet on a great lens.
