Then you’ll realize, that we have also in western countries smaller genome changes, which are still categorized under a variant.

There is a also tool, where you could evaluate, which genes are changed, answering your question about altering „the“ Spike protein.
In the end, if we are talking about SARS-Cov2 variants, we are talking about a genome change of only approximately:
