  1. Many thanks for all your suggestions. Some are really great, some are amusing, and I think nearly all of you have taken my request in good spirit (no pun intended). Also many thanks to those who have wished me well and to those who have offered to come and see me in action when we open.

As far As I can see there is only one poster who really seems to be doing his best to have nasty dig at me, without straying so far out of line that the post gets removed.....

Never mind, it’s frankly much less than I’d expected, and I knew I was in for hiding to nothing when I started this thread.

To those of you who query my ‘recovering alcoholic' credentials for running a bar, I can only say that time will tell. If the bar is still open in a year’s time, let’s see if I have succumbed.

I am now well into my fourth year of sobriety, and during this time I have spent countless hours with friends at bars and not once was I tempted to take a drink. I accept it will be a bit different when I have to spend many hours in a bar every day, but I know myself and my will power – which is very strong.

Many years ago I was a four pack plus per day cigarette man, and had been for over 20 years, but I decided to go cold turkey and have not touched a cigarette since. In the early days after I quit I spent hours in pubs and bars with people who were smoking and not once did I give in to the temptation. As the years passed, the craving completely disappeared and I can now be amongst chain smokers 24/7, and the only affect they will have on me is extreme annoyance due to the ‘2nd hand’ smoke that is going into my lungs.

The reason I never smoked again was simple. I saw what cigarettes had done to my lungs and general health. I would never put my body through that again.

Ditto alcohol. It all but killed me, as those who read my blog will know too well. As it is, I am suffering from chronic heart disease, have had open heart surgery, and diabetes. I had a terrible scare recently when a doctor misdiagnosed me as suffering from chronic pancreatitis.

It was a lucky escape and one that I shall never forget; and if I ever needed a reason not to drink, then that is it. If I drink again, my life will be over and all that pain and effort will have been for nothing. I owe it to my old (and new families) to do my best to stay healthy and active for as long as I can.

As for running a successful bar – well again, only time will tell. I certainly do not expect to get rich from it, but I do think that by using reasonable acumen, I should be able to make it turn a small profit which will largely benefit my girlfriend and her family.

I am not going to go into the ‘why’s and wherefores’ in this thread as to how I think I can make it pay, but once it is up and running I will be only too pleased to explain all if you come and pay me a visit and then you can see for yourself.

I don’t have any ‘magic’ solutions, or a truck load of gorgeous girls, I will just apply sensible, consistent, SOBER management, and will try my best to give as good a service as possible to customers, which I think is the key.

Yes there are a lot of empty bars around the lake, and many change hands quite frequently. This is one of the reasons that I am able to pick up one at a reasonable price.

But believe it not there are a few bars that do make a steady income. Nothing spectacular – but enough to pay the bills and put food on the table. That’s all I’m looking for.

Keep the name suggestions coming, and I will let you know when I have made up my mind. I will also let you know when the bar is finally open for business.

    Thanks everyone,

    Mobi

Although this thread is about the name for the OP's new bar, remember Sam Malone, the alcoholic owner of Cheers. Can't say that one was not successful :D

  2. The consistently wrong weights the OP mention, don't seem to be a mistake, more like intention to deceive.

Quite unnecessary too I would say and not very clever by the supermarket. I would never have thought about

looking at the weight and price per kg on the label, good for the OP to catch that one. Basically, if the

price is fine for me, I'd take it, even knowing that I could get the same cheaper at markets. Very different is

if I think the supermarket is trying to cheat on me, then I just won't buy (I don't shop at the supermarket the OP

hints at anyway, but would be the same for any others).

For the appliances, I don't think it is the same. I could be wrong, but I am almost sure that somewhere in that

"80% discount" there is a small print saying "up to". That is standard practice, same as the "from XXX" also often

    used.

Liberal regulations, laissez-faire, do not endorse fraud, which would be the first case. Simplest solution, walk away,

    plenty of other options.

  3. This Hit and Run thread is really about any kind of restaurant serving any kind of food in this region. Please, this is not the Khao Soy - pork liver specialist thread!

I was going to suggest that a new thread should be opened either for that particular restaurant or Khao Soy, as the long discussion here amongst a few posters kind

of has taken away the easy/quick reading that seemed to be intended for this

thread (no big deal, can skip through the "yes liver" "no liver" "yes blood", etc. but

maybe that would be better in a separate thread).

This new casual Lanna food place has been widely discussed already on multiple threads. I don't personally see the need for a separate thread on it now. The info is already available. It's a good, VERY well run, small budget priced place on 3rd road with a limited menu. The overwhelming response has been positive but not to expect a culinary orgasm either.

OK, I don't remember having seen it before. I just meant that the liver/blood discussion took away a bit from the intention of the thread (although since you opened it, you must know better what that was).

As a side note, the discussion has managed to trigger my curiosity to go and check the liver/blood or not thing laugh.png

  5. A resort is not the best place for your uncle to find what your uncle is looking for.

In such a short time, it is going to be very difficult for him, but I would say his

best chances would be in Bangkok.

Someone said schools and hospitals would be good places. With your uncle being

a doctor I would say he would have quite an easy opening line with doctors and nurses.

Someone else also mentioned Landmark as a hotel, near Bumrungrad hospital. In the same area

I would suggest JW Marriot, a bit more expensive, but well within the budget the OP says

    the uncle has.

Then, sign for a check-up at Bumrungrad (good value for money). Can chat with doctors and

nurses and see if there is something there.

    Difficult, but an option

  6. Thai logic sounds like an oxymoron to most of us, but it is just a different thought process.

The bit that upsets me sometimes is when I am told "you don't understand". I f#@ing do understand,

I disagree. It is OK to disagree, but look at it this way.

Yes, you guessed, "you don't understand".

I think it is more the matter of them being unable to contemplate things from a different point of view,

because Thai ways are better, than cultural disagreements/different so called logics.

  7. tnx.

Bottom line for me is best way of generating income from a 3mil investment.

10% relatively risk free ( points above noted) looks reasonable?

I would say between 6 and 8% more of a reasonable estimate. You will

have expenses and empty periods at several times during the lifetime of

    your investment.

I won't comment on the buy/don't buy in Thailand, even less on the "3 million

won't get you a lot" Duh, as you correctly were asking about % ROI.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  8. Not implausible but highly improbable.

If the plane has been shot down, surely there would be some debris / bodies recovered by now, considering how extensive the search effort has been on both air and sea, on both coasts of Malaysia.

I tend to agree that the shoot down scenario is pretty remote, but I shudder to think of the blowback if, for example, Malaysia shot down a planeload of Chinese citizens, even if they had determined that the plane was hijacked for the purpose of crashing into Petronas Tower. In that case, I'd expect them to point the search effort as far away as possible, while cleaning up all evidence of a missile strike, before they eventually reported the discovery of a debris field.

Even if Beijing wanted to do nothing in retaliation, the nationalist fervor they have fomented recently in China would pretty much force them to respond, lest the CCP look weak in the eyes of their citizenry.

Conspiracy theorists could go wild speculating what kind of 3rd party help they'd be getting to keep such a scenario from going real bad real quick.

I'm not betting on any particular scenario, just (wishful thinking) they're safe on the ground being bargained for as search efforts garner all the attention.

Accepting that nobody knows anything and suspecting that different governments are hiding information, not necessarily for the wrong reasons, this sounds like the most unlikely of explanations.

Does anyone think for a second that the Beijing government would hesitate to bring down a plane, even if Chinese, with full Chinese crew and passengers, if they thought it was going to attack one of their cities? The would do it without moving an eyelid and they are a government that would accept that without even a formal protest.

The Pennsylvania United Airlines 93 in 9/11 was brought down by the passengers trying to regain control or save others in their effort.

If I had a family member in one of the planes that crashed into the NY twin towers,

would I have let thousands of people die to save him/her? Probably yes. If I had known that there was no way to save my loved one, would I have pressed a theoretical button to blow that plane and save everybody else? Absolutely, without any hesitation. This is not a case where the Malaysian government could have been questioned for acting strongly if that was the situation. It must have been something else.

Unfortunately there is no way yet to bring closure to the families of the passengers and crew until something is found for sure. Hopefully it is a hijack and they are all somewhere, but it seems very much that eventually the remains of the plane will be found at the bottom of the ocean, with all lives aboard lost with it. Maybe one day we will know what happened.

  9. I think that is a very good addition to TV. Good to see professional advice given

for a change, rather than mostly bar-stool lawyers opinions, even if the topics

are not necessarily part of what I might want to know.

My suggestion would be that although not allowing replies in the

topics is a good thing in general (to avoid bar-stool lawyers) it might be good to

allow the OP to post in the topics as a follow up to their questions and the lawyers

answers. I don't know if that is possible to set up.

  10. Thanks for all the interesting and at times typically ignorant comments from some.

This is a lesson that we have learned together and I am sure she will think twice about buying anything like this again. My g/f is not from Issan (not that location should make a difference) or a bar girl, she's from just north of BKK and studying for her doctorate in Thai Natural Medicine. I am supporting her while she studies and once she has her qualifications she will be supporting me.

I have already admitted it was her money to do with what she wanted but she really does not need this beauty treatment.... at least in my eyes anyway. Everything is good with us again and life resumes as before.

I'm sure this thread has amused many people, me included as I expected many of these comments, I was happy to see there are a lot of sensible and helpful responses to my origional question about a cooling off period.

    Thanks guys.

It is not amazing here, but weird how such a simple question in the OP has turned

into mostly advice from many know-it-alls about how you should run your relationship and your life.

Glad you have worked things out with your girl friend. I concur with the majority that the money is lost - even if that 7 day cooling off period mentioned by a couple of posters actually exists - hopefully she will get something out of it.

Now, if I were you... nah, just kidding thumbsup.gif

  11. I think Chalerm would unite reds, yellows, blacks and any other colors, just so that he would never be able to do even more

damage than he has already done to the country. What an absolute bad joke of an oxygen waster bah.gif

By the way, when was he made a Dr on top of everything else, is it so he can write his own

    "ear medicine" prescriptions?

  12. Actually there is work being done now, I was quite surprised to see it.

I think it is a poor design, far too small and hate the stairs, but hopefully it will be finished one of these years
