Thai Baht is the problem. Of course the pound has his own trouble due to the brexit but the Baht is growing up against all western currencies for a while and it seems not to want to stop.  I wonder why no one take action against that? That is right?  Is that everything ok for the thai central bank and for  thai  authorities too? They have the power to stop and to reverse it. Why don't they do it? Apparently  for some dark reason of which it's not given us to know, it is ok for them.

the Thai Baht is your problem Mate and no action is taken because obviously the Bank of Thailand and other authorities think that everything is ok. you are right "they" could reverse it but it's not an easy procedure and the only dark reason why it is not reversed is created by bar stool talk (because for a bottle of Singha, Chang, Heineken or the fee of a working Lady more $, £, €, AUD have to be shelled out) backed by wishful thinking and wet dreams of expats who derive their income in $, £, €, AUD and have problems to make ends meet.

The official projection for 2019 Thai exports was an increase of 5%.   Last month (May), that was revised to 3%.   This month (June) that's been again downgraded to 1%.   The strength of the baht is not because of its inherent strength.   There is a bubble about to burst with a contraction of its exports and falling domestic consumption.

projections, especially 'official' ones, aren't worth the paper or bandwidth used to publish them when they don't match the facts. and that applies globally.

a few months ago "lurned eggsburts" projected that the FED will hike interest rates three times in 2019, today the projection is... FED will decrease once.

a few months ago Brexit was Brexit, Nigel Farage and his boys and girls will make sure that Brexit happens. today Nigel is standing somewhere holding his dick wondering what happened same same Theresa May.

It's more realistic to look at the Pound/US$/Euro/AUS $ exchange rates, against which the pound has been relatively stable during the last 6 months.   The problem is the over valuation of the Baht, evidence of which is already manifesting itself in the drop of imports, and in the drop in non Asian tourists.

you mean of course a drop in exports because of the strong (not over-valued) Baht.

    nos. 2018

    Imports $ 249.23 bb

    Exports $ 252.48 bb

    Balance $   +3.25 bb

    nos. 2019 YTD:

    Imports $ 20.012 bb

    Exports $ 18.556 bb

Balance $ -1.456 bb = 7.28% = nothing to rave about, nothing to whine about.

    U.K. trade deficit 2018 = £ 31 bb =  $ 40 billion

Thailand current account surplus of 7.4 percent of GDP.

U.K. UK current account deficit widened to 3.9% of GDP in 2018,

    compared with 3.3% in 2017.

Its all pairs. Not exactly rocket science. 2 pairs and we are into arbitrage. The other fantasy stuff comes off the back of your tea trolley. As for criticising Naam, maybe you could find something a little less trivial. He's all ears I am sure.

all ears, quite amused and thankful for Chivas' pass enabling a rebuttal containing some hard facts.

as this is ThaiVisa i expect (it happened more than once before) that i will be accused being personaly responsible for the atrocities in Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen and Buchenwald). oh well...

By the way I wouldnt be overly impressed with Naam agreeing with you. The so called financial guru 7 years ago had no idea that "Cable" referred to the exchange rate of Sterling/Dollar the oldest and first financial instrument pair so called because of the transatlantic cable of the time between the UK and USA

why would anybody be interested to know the exchange rate code "cable" of the world's leading currency USD vs. the insignificant currency GBP used on an economically insignificant island that depreciated >triple digit percentages vs. other major currencies?

i'm a German and i remember English lessons as a boy when a single mighty British Pound (supported by slave labour and rigorous exploitation of commodities in the Commonwealth colonies) bought 20 Deutsche Mark. extrapolated as of today that would be GBP 1 = DEM 1.95583 = minus >1000%

now back to the corner where your framed certificate hangs certifying "knows what cable means".

this must be "Thai baht breaks" comment no. 793 since i started reading Thaivisa 15 years ago.

    :coffee1:

Just a few short years after it broke last time then.

Thai reserves in august 1997 USD 20.3 billion,

Thai reserves in march 2019 USD 209.7 billion.

keep on dreaming "Thai Baht breaks".

Better question - why is the THB strengthening, and when will it level off?

Thai exports will eventually be priced out of the market.  I wonder what is flowing from China through Thailand that keeps the exports strong? Just a thought. The government can subsidize things like farm products, but that can not work for the long-term. Something is funny.

My guess is that it's painful now, but eventually the Thai baht breaks.

The accommodations are inferior and nothing like the value and service you can get in Thailand.  Many more street dogs.

Feces on the street.  They've abolished the 1000 rupee note for the 2000 - try paying for a 100 rupee lunch with a large note - good luck.

inferior accomodations are in line with restaurants serving 100 Rupee ($1.40) lunches.

Apparently Americans who aren't of Indian origin may apply for the ten year visa but if you are of Indian descent you must apply for the ten year.  Confusing.

void story. any citizen with Indian roots can apply for an OCI card (which looks like a passport) and is valid for life.

    Quote

The Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) is an immigration status permitting a foreign citizen of Indian origin to live and work in the Republic of India indefinitely.

Indians on the other would be flattered by a farang wanting to stay long-term because there's very few such (well, with good reason). So, the local people, police and FRRO's would likely be as helpful as they could to help out (yep, complete opposite:-)

sorry mate... i agree with most of your comments but pertaining to residence you misjudge the situation. i (we) have residence permits, own propery in India and gave it a try to live there after spending 15 years in Florida and before the now 14 years in Thailand. i liked it (kinda... sort of...) but my wife could not cope. but then she doesn't really like Thailand either.

However, you can just get a five year multiple entry tourism visa and go home for two months once a year to avoid overstays.

and what will you say at the airport when leaving when asked for your income tax certificate because you spent more than 183 days in a calendar year?

I have been here 12 years and this is the first time I realise (have been explained) that a "Retirement" visa (which I have) is not the same as an extension of a "Non-immigrant O-A" visa.

Let us see how long time this distinction will be upheld

If you have been here for 12 years you have an extension of stay based on retirement, unless you go home each year and get a new OA visa.

you get an extension of your stay not an extension of a visa.

a permit which is in every country of this planet called a visa gets rechristened as "extension of stay" by Thai immigration has to be accepted with a smile and a "this is Thailand"

Actually when I came to Thailand to meet my GF the first time (we obviously "met" via internet) I brought her a silver Thors hammer. She is wearing it every thursday/Thorsday (and she is a teacher in a christian private school, the christians obviously don't know what it is, quite funny)

do you think Buddhists, Muslims or Hindus know? :coffee1:

I’ve lived here a long time and I don’t understand why anyone would want to live here. There’s nothing to make you want to spend more than 2 days here.

then why did you live here a long time? :saai:

CPR can keep the blood circulating and the brain supplied with oxygen for quite some time,

only if CPR is carried out by Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. CPR can fill lungs with air but the transfer of oxyden can only happen by blood circulation and that means heart pumping.
