That is unfortunate, capital gains accumulated while not tax resident will be taxed, and capital losses incurred while tax resident will be disallowed. But how does actual savings come into this? If I have $1000 in savings on Dec 31, are all remittances apportioned as part savings, part capital gains and part capital? Am I permitted to cherry pick the actual bank account savings first? Fortunately I caught this before remitting too much this year. Wise transfers to my bank account for 2024 now total just under $7500, or approximately 270K baht at the current exchange rate, equal to the 2x60K exclusion and 150K 0% bracket. Anything else goes directly to the wife's account. Glad we didn't transfer funds to buy a new car!

I take from your previous posts that only actual cash in a bank savings account is considered "savings." Your stock portfolio on Dec 31, 2023 is irrelevant to "prior savings" when remitting funds to Thailand in 2024? How do we determine where the money that is remitted comes from? Buy/sell stocks a hundred times a year, some with gains and some with losses. Remit funds to Thailand a dozen times a year at random intervals. There seems to be no way to link an individual stock sale with a remittance to Thailand.

How is this arrived at, that the entire $1000 is assessable? I have $1000 as the cost basis for the stock from 2022. (ignoring the value on Dec 31, 2023), and I have $1000 capital gain on the sale. $1000 stays in the US, $1000 comes into Thailand. How do we determine which money is brought into Thailand? Do I choose which pot of money I bring over, or does TRD get to decide?

We bought one for the wife a year ago, similar to the red model above from a local dealer. Has the front basket, and a much larger covered rear basket. Think it was 15K baht. Many shops carry them, as do Global and HomePro........exactly the same but for labels. Only used for trips to the supermarket mall, back roads with little to no traffic. Recharge every couple of weeks. No problems to report.

Hi Mike! Stock sale capital gains and assessable income question. I bought a batch of XYZ for $1000 in 2022, and I sell all shares for $2000 this year, for $1000 capital gains. I use $1000 to buy some other asset, and send $1000 to Thailand for monthly expenses. How much, if any, of the $1000 brought in to Thailand would be considered assessable income? Assuming TRD will use purchase price rather than value Dec 31, 2023 for cost basis. I want to claim the original $1000 investment returned in the stock sale was brought in, with the $1000 capital gain left in brokerage account and reinvested.

My Thai visa is in an expired passport

No, you have an expired passport with an invalid/expired extension of stay. Of course they will. You may have trouble getting there, but they'll let ya in. But of course you've already made an appointment at the US embassy to renew your passport or apply for an emergency travel document, right? -
A New Beginning in Thailand

Can I try? It was a dark and stormy night. Suddenly, a shot rang out! A door slammed. The maid screamed. Suddenly, a global tax initiative appeared on the horizon! While millions of ex-pats were starving, my ex-wife lived in luxury. Meanwhile, in a small flat in Manchester,......... -
For 2024 US taxes, for single filers, the standard deduction is $14,600. The 0% capital gains rate applies thru the first two tax brackets to $47,150. These will of course be increased for 2025 and 2026, etc. The 0% gains rate applies AFTER offsetting losses against gains, so if you're tax loss harvesting you're in for a big surprise. Thailand taxes gains, but does not allow reduction for losses. Thailand taxes all of these foreign capital gains as regular income, while capital gains on sales of Thai stocks are not taxed. Two years of global income tax paid to Thailand, probably looking at US$25K when this goes through, would cover the entire purchase price of a nice little condo in one of the surrounding countries. My plan B will be two residences, a summer home and a winter home, each occupied 5-1/2 months, plus a month of travel to a third country.

Hysteria caused by foreigners? When the grand poobah of the tax authority himself states his government's intentions to the press? Sure, blame the victim. I've spent a lifetime under the US regime taxing global, interstellar and multidimensional income. Uncle Big Brother has already had a shot at all my income, and I've paid all taxes due as directed. I don't see the need to submit to some corrupt, third-world entity grabbing what they have no right to.

You're most likely correct, but the damage has been done. I can't see planning for a long-term future in Thailand, and any decisions will be made taking into consideration the potential, probable future tax consequences. Maybe we'll get another five years before implementation, or maybe four, or perhaps three. I'll be limiting transfers into Thailand, spending down current in-country savings, putting off purchases and any Thailand investments. We can do without that addition to the house, and I'm sure we can get a few more years out of the pickup.

Phuket Workshops Aim to Reduce Motorcycle Fatalities

Great! Five strategies all involving committee meetings and junkets and studies. Nowhere do I see "law enforcement" or "rider training/education" mentioned. -
Why now? Nothing new. There has been a peace offer since before the beginning, with essentially the same requirements. No NATO and end of ethnic cleansing. Prior offers would have had the Donbass remain in a Ukrainian federal republic with limited autonomy. Sadly, democracy happened, and the citizens have voted to leave. The current offer is the same as before......minus Donbass. I'm sure this offer will remain in effect until democracy takes root in Odessa, and then the offer will be revised.

That's the way these things work, it's all about the optics. Russia wasn't invited precisely because they might have attended, and the diplomatic cirque-jirque wouldn't be successful. If only your allies, or those you've bribed or extorted, show up, you get to claim "unanimous (or else)" agreement on all proposals. It's similar to the US (in)Justice Department indicting Chinese or Russians on extraterritorial charges. Important announcements are made to the press, alleged criminals remain in their home countries, and we get to claim victory. Only sometimes it doesn't work out. Sometimes the indicted Russian or Chinese (or legal representative) goes to court to fight the charges, and then suddenly all the evidence is classified for "national security" reasons, prosecution requests endless postponements, and the case disappears from the news, to be replaced by other squirrels.
