  1. This is slightly off topic, (sorry), but it always amazes me when you go to a manufacturer to have something bespoke made and they are not remotely interested unless you order 10. I'm quite happy to pay more for my one, but, no 10 or 100 or 1000 is the minimum. An example is of a silver frame I wanted made with a specific design, each costing THB23,000 and the minimum requirement is 3. Six months later they agreed to make one. I'm still thinking about it....

  2. I slipped and fell in my flat the other day and sustained a forehead injury requiring stitches, just above my left eyebrow. Initially I applied cold compresses to my eye, (which has come up a real shiner), but I think I should switch to warm compresses now, to reduce the welling of my eyelid which is swollen.

    Proper advice required.

I am applying arnica to the bruising, but it's coming up in a dramatic blue, to black colour, and will be so for a few days. I have used cold (used) tea bags, which are quite soothing.

Grateful for proper advice regarding the compress now that it's about 48 hours old.

  3. That made 1 litre of juice, I drink half in the evening and half in the morning.

OP - you're better not to let the juice sit for several hours, but to drink it a straight after juicing.

We've been juicing for ten years. Used to be apples, carrots, celery and ginger, but now with a new juicer - Philips Viva Collection, with a large "neck", we juice kale, guava, apple, carrot, celery and ginger, the fruit cuts the bitterness of the kale. The juicer is easy to clean, and with the wider neck there is very little chopping required.

  4. Can anyone recommend child friendly beach resorts in Thailand?

Is Phuket still a good destination, or is Krabi better?

Has anyone ever used Asia Travel, and do they recommend them?

A friend in UK is booking a holiday and seems convinced that it's better to use a local travel agent, (price-wise?) to get the best deal, but I think with internet it probablt makes not a great difference. She has been looking at Asia Travel, but would like some reassurance that it's OK/reliable.

    Grateful for input.

  5. "She then showed me where on my arrival card I had not put down the exit re-entry permit number, and scolded me for not doing that.

Then she blamed me for the whole incident .... for not properly putting that number on the arrival card.

    She was right ...."

That's the important part of your story.

I confess that it took me a couple of tellings off and mis-stamps before I realised that that's it's the Re-entry Permit number they need to see on your Arrival Card, rather than your actual Visa or Extension of Stay number.

It also helps if, as you hand over your Passport you have it open at the Re-entry stamp page, point to it and politely say "Visa".

    .

Likewise - I've put my extension of stay number where it calls for a "visa". Now I know it's the re-entry permit number. I wonder what it says in Thai...just as a matter of interest, not because it would make an iota of difference.

  6. I was initialy asked for a letter when getting my stamps transferred to a new UK passport at Jomtien in July. Fortunately the kind and helpful lady officer explained that a letter was required because I had neglected to cancel my old passport by cutting off a corner. I offered to correct my error immediately. She lent me her scissors. Problem solved...no letter required.

Last year in July I transferred stamps from my old to my new passport. I don't think a letter was presented. I too omitted to cut the corners of the old passport, but the Imm officer gave me scissors to cut them, and all was well. Has anyone had the letter request from Chaengwattana recently? Similarly has anyone had to pay the new fee and present all the paperwork as if for another Extension of Stay at Chaengwattana recently? Do you have to pay for another Re-entry permit too, or can that be transferred free of charge?

  7. Buy a sh--t-hot condo for 10+M baht and get an investment visa

AFAIK this (investment through property) has not been a possibility for more than 10 years.

That is an extension of stay and continues to be available. What is not available to new investors is the 3 million baht version.

This is academic, as I have an extension of stay based on retirement, but if I wasn't over 50, are you

saying that I could have had an extension of stay based on my condo costing THB10m+?

  8. When I used KLM it was the night flight too, (via AMS arriving EDI at around 9 am). I don't know which airline I'll use after BA change. The only option seems to be Lufthansa, as the Middle Eastern flights would mean two stopovers. My drive takes 1 hour, but it's the picking up the hire car etc, and if you have a day flight and want to "enjoy all the facilities" of business class that some suggest are there, I'm glad for them. The sense of a short flight created by sleeping 6-8 hours of it with the aid of a pill seems to me more preferable. "Enjoying the facilities" might tempt one to drink a glass or three of champagne, but not if I'm driving at the other end. When I sleep on a night flight I do so straight after take off, foregoing the "enjoyable facilities" of dinner with wine etc etc. It's never going to be the best dining experience whether your in Business of First Class.

Horses for courses obviously, but the options (night time vs. daytime) from the so-called hub of BKK seem to be limited, and getting more so.

If you want night flights in both directions plus a wide choice of flights out of Bangkok you could try Cathay Pacific and get to utilise your One World points.

Yes, I've done that, but of course it's via Hong Kong, so there are two stopovers, (HKG) and (LHR), and it takes about 24 hours, give or take.

  9. ...

Day flights are a pain. What are you supposed to do for 11-12 hours to stay awake, so that you can sleep at the other end?

Huh? Leaving Bangkok in the morning, having a long day airborne and arriving at your destination before bed time? What's wrong with that?

What to do for 12 hours? Watch movies, read, catch up on work, eat and maybe a nap.

I mean, would you sleep all day before a long overnight flight?

No, I sleep on the long overnight flight. It sure passes the time. Also, when I arrive in LHR I have to transfer to EDI and then I have to drive to Perthshire. If I've slept, then showered at LHR, my driving is a lot safer, (especially when it's dark).

With a late evening drive into Perthshire, I can see why you stopped using KLM! For me, the family castle is only 30 minutes from ABZ so not a chore even getting in at 10PM.

When BA changes, what do you think your options will be then?

  11. I'm on a night flight BKK-LHR in mid August, which I booked last week. Used to fly KLM via AMS to EDI, but as noted they have cancelled their night flight, (and now do a code share with China Airlines; er, no thanks). BKK seems to be less of a hub as a hub.

  12. Sounds like you are confusing "Backup" with "Recovery partition".

Most laptops come with a hard drive that has a certain portion "roped off" with a complete reinstallation of Windows on it, so in a worst case scenario you can boot up and restore the machine to factory condition.

If they are saying this partition has been overwritten, and someone set up Windows Backup to create a backup on it, then they're right (although I wasn't aware Windows Backup created VHD files).

Have you had this machine since new or has someone else been at it?

Only me since new 13 months ago.
