No, it's never been "rosy" here (other than the spectacles some people wear), but it does seem to have gone even further downhill in many regards since mid-90's onwards.

He got the nickname "Chang Tha Si" (which means painter in Thai) because he always "whitewashed" or "brushed over" corruption within the party.

Try putting away your "loyalties" and actually discussing the issue and points raised without personal critique.

AV is guilty of taking a leading role in siding with Army Chief Poajinda to force a coalition of the unwilling, that he knew would be widely despised and cause serious social unrest, but for the sake of power (and it was his only way to power) he underhandedly carried through with the undemocratic deed. He, the elite backers and the army are responsible for the consequent mayhem. He shouldn't have done it in the first place, but certainly at the first sign of serious civil unrest, for the sake of his country he should have dissolved parliament immediately. Shame on his greedy lust for power and efforts to pervert democracy for the sake of those who he and his privileged associates see as being worthy.

I think that it is the best news I have read in a long while. Heads of state should be held accountable for their acts. If this was done more often then there would be far fewer dead people in the world. The protests in Bangkok were peaceful, there was no danger, except from the military. As for the military in Thailand, Australia or anywhere else involving itself in civil affairs—this should never be done. The military are responsible for carrying out the actions of the psychotics who run the world.

When is "Thailand" going to wake up and stop this kind of bullshit from happening. It's just plain "wrong" that a convicted fugitive can file charges against someone else whilst being on the run himself.

Then why not starting from the beginning? Reopen Thaksin's asset concealment case, were he got off scott free because some of the judges though, "hey he is gulty all right, but if we sentence him there's going to be trouble"

Or maybe reopen the case of "Shipping Moo", key witness on a fraud case against Thaksin's company, murdered before he could testify.

I mean, clean slate, begin from scratch, right?

It's Thaksin (with an H) that should let Thailand and it's inhabitants get on with their lives, instead of insisting in his right to rule over the country, leading his band of political mercenaries and red shirted sycophants into his goal of a dynastic kleptocracy.

Unfortunately his ego and incessant need to line his own pockets means that he will never give up and never stop trying.

I think the only hope to possibly stopping the massive amount of corruption in Thailand and changing the general Thai attitude that corruption is okay is for the 2 most highly respected institutions in Thailand, namely the Royal family and the Buddhist Monks, unite to do a massive campaign against it. They could really promote how Un-Buddhist like corruption is, how much it hurts the country, your fellow Thai and the Thai culture in general. Someone has to put their foot down to stop this and those 2 institutions are the only ones that have the moral authority to be successfully at doing this as most Thais in general do listen to and respect those 2 institutions . Otherwise I think it is hopeless and will only get worse.

Not having encountered Buddhism before coming to Thailand, I was of the understanding that bribery is what Thai Buddhism is all about, i.e. pray and leave an offering and ask for what you want. I give to you, you give to me. Is that not correct?

There was no riot.

There was a 2006 coup - a delayed reaction protest against that coup in 2010 - an attack resulting in many deaths on those protesters instead of an easily achievable political solution - A protest and acting in self-defence does not a riot make - the protesters demands for an election and not letting the coup 'stand', were vindicated in subsequent elections.

The election validated the protesters as they knew they were being governed by an electoral minority.

Responsibilities for the deaths from those political events need to be ascertained, in order to give pause to future endeavours in this regard.

This applies in equal measure to both sides.
