  1. Ceiling fans. While it does not cool off the house itself. It keeps the air moving inside. Which helps make the inside temp lower.

I will respectfully disagree if you are talking about the usual large ceiling fans. Because heat rises, it creates a hot air zone at the ceiling. Ceiling fans re-mix the hot air into the room.

I have been told that is why good air-con installers position the units a short distance below the ceiling.

    Klikster,

It ok to disagree with me. I have ceiling fans in every room and am pleased with the results. No need for air con except in the bedrooms. By keeping the air moving there is no hot air zone at the ceiling. Turn the fans off and the room will heat up very quickly.

  2. Yesterday we went to immigration to get a residency letter so I could renew drivers license. After about 10 minutes of studing my passport, and checking the computor, the immigration lady started to have a very long conversation with my wife. Now in the past we had gone to Pu Sing immigration, this time we were told we had to go to Si Saket. That's another story. Anyways wife was told that she had to report to immigration within 24 hours of me coming home that she had a foreigner staying in her home or she could get a10000 baht fine. Which really means that I get a fine. I got my residency letter plus a small paper stapled into my passport saying that I had been reported staying at such & such adress. Now I know that you are suppose to be reporting but never really bother about it before. Because it never really was an issue before. You guys might want to check in to save yourself a fine

  3. Thanks for all the insights and info. It does not sound like it will be practical to plant rubber on this land. But being 40 km from her grandfather neither will a garden. There are rubber trees in the area and it was just an idea. The land is making a bit money growing cassava. So we will just keep doing that until she thinks of something else. Thanks again

  4. You can call BS if you want. Whatever. I was only commenting on what I have seen since I have been out here. I realize that most foreigners hate the idea and it does bring a rather strong response most times .I myself do not care for it. But I do not think that I am gullible and I do know that thai men do pay it.

  5. Sin sod is a thai tradition that every thai man and foreign man marring a thai lady must do. Even if you do not agree with it. Its all a matter of Face and respect for your in-laws and their traditions. When it came time for my brother in-law to get married the whole family came together to put it together. With that being said Sin Sod is usually negotiated between the 2 families with everybody in both families watching. Because you have no family to negotiate for you it is usually left up to the girlfriend to do on your behalf. Just try and remember how much you would end up spending in your own country to get married. Your girlfriend should by this time know what you can afford. Depending on what kind of parents she has, you should get most of the money back after the cost of the wedding. And if you don't then you have a real good idea of what kind of in-laws you have. I have seen the total cost vary but if you don't do it the whole village will know it. And they will look down on you and give you no respect.

I call B.S. on this one

But then again plenty of gullible foreigners around.

I have not paid a dime in sinsod and i know many other Thai and foreigners who have not paid it. Its an old custom and some use it to extract money from the foreigner / Thai. Its ok if it is returned but often it is not.

It certainly is not a thing everyone does that is just something those that have paid (and lost the money) say to feel better. I can see how if your twice the age of your prospected bride that you have to pay. (normal id say) but if your both educated same age ect ect. Why pay who even says its Thai custom that should rule a marriage between Thai and a foreigner.

    *Sorry did not read good*

yes the money returned part .. then its just a show thing.. i think most could go with that and with the fact that you pay for your own wedding. I would find this a perfectly acceptable thing.

  7. Best to let the wife and MIL sort this out thai style. But here is something else to consider. It sounds like he is farming on a number of property with absent owners. Imagine the look on all these absent land owners when they get a tax bill for land that is being used for farming when they thought it was dormant

  8. In the specific example of the coffee shop. How many are financed by the foreign/ex pat boyfriend?

It does not look like any of the shops are being financed by farang/expat boyfriends. And there is nothing wrong with a little competition. But the whole reason you go into business is to make a profit. After so many shops have been open up,why start up the same business as everybody else?

  9. Was wondering if anybody knows why, when someone comes up with a good idea for a business then everybody wants to copy this business? I live in a medium size issan town. Two years ago someone opened up a coffee shop. We now have 11 coffee shops. With that many coffee shops how can anyone be making any money? I still only go to the orignal shop because of its location and convience. I saw the same thing happening when I lived in Koh Samui.
