  1. Or you could try and join a real university and try Chula instead :o

Have a look here and scroll down to the letter E or T for education / English or teaching degree courses

    http://www.grad.chula.ac.th/gradcu/

The aim is to help the PM and not to question/criticize the legitimacy of Educational Institutions in Thailand. FYI, MC is an accredited institution in Thailand and in more than 101 countries affiliated with Loma Linda University in California. Their nursing program is offered at Mission Hospital, Yommart.

Check out the list of universities in which MC is affiliated with:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Seven...nd_universities

Chula is also a good university. I have been involved with external accreditation programs and a couple of professors from there.

  2. I read the below article recently and I would like your comments on it. I'm studying various aspects of buddhism and your comments will be appreciated.

    LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Buddha's teaching corrupted in Thailand by temple building and idol worship

Re: "The great Buddhist schism in Thailand", Opinion, November 10.

The Venerable Phra Mettanando is correct when he says that Thai Buddhism needs a radical reform, and no reform is better than to educate the people about the doctrine of Shakyanuni Buddha. Most Thai people are not aware that during the Buddha's lifetime teaching of the Dharma, he did not want to construct a monument to his mission. This is contrary to today's extensive building of temples, of Buddha statues, the grandeur and splendour of which appears to measure the respect and homage paid to the great philosopher in return perhaps for his blessing of good health and fortune.

Quite a number of monks and people also are not aware that the Buddha repeatedly reminded his followers not to resort to fortune telling and spiritual worship. In order to convey and teach the inconceivable Dharma of Shakyanuni Buddha there must be Buddhist disciples with a high level of cultivation and virtue to carry out the task. Perhaps this is the only circumstance when an ecclesiastical body is needed to verify those who are qualified to teach the Dharma to the public. Recently the setting-up of a Chinese Buddhist university in Taiwan by a venerable monk to teach the Buddha's doctrine is an example of how to bring up a band of teachers who know what they are teaching.

With the true and proper Dharma propagated, hopefully there will be more places for learning the Buddha's philosophy, both for monks and the general public. Eventually, resources for the building of temples for the sake of worship and merit making can be directed to more useful purposes. And Buddhists will be able to take the proper path to attain nirvana.

That's a letter to the editor, not an article. Personally I think it shows a lack of understanding of the cultural context for Buddhism in Thailand. I suspect the letter writer has an axe to grind that has little to do with any valid critique of Thai Buddhism, and more to do with promoting Chinese Buddhism.

Aside from having a pesronal agenda, is there any element of truth in what he claims in his letter? Please explain.

  3. Thanks for the info prighas, that makes it seem doable after all.

But would I not be expected to have studied one of those subjects as an

integral part of my degree in order to teach the subject?

If you major in Business Administration, you could be qualified to teach in any one of the following areas (depending on your concentration): Accounting, Finance, Management and Marketing, Information Systems, Hotel Management, Ethics, and any other matter related to business such as: business law, business ethics, business research methods, business mathematics, etc.

You could also teach Business English.

  5. I got this recently--enjoy!

(1). Hello, you've reached Jim and Sonya. We can't pick up the phone

right now, because we're doing something we really enjoy. Sonya likes

doing it up and down, and I like doing it left to right... real slowly.

So leave a message, and when we're done.... brushing our teeth we'll get

    back to you.

(2). Hi, this is John. If you are the phone company, I've already sent

the money. If you are my parents, please send money. If you are my

financial aid institution, you didn't lend me enough money. If you are

my friends, you owe me money. If you are a female, don't worry, I have

    plenty of money.

    (3). Hi, I'm probably home, I'm just avoiding someone I don't like.

Leave me a message, and if I don't call back, it's you.

(4). Please leave a message. However, you have the right to remain

silent. Everything you say will be recorded and will be used by us.

  6. That part about places outside Bangkok may have come out wrong, I didn't intend to make it sound as if Bangkok is the only civilized part of the country. I was merely under the impression that most schools teaching adults are to be found there.

But if universities would indeed consider hiring me as an English teacher, then it's another story altogether as it certainly increases my possibilities of finding employment.

And by the way, we who reside in the Swedish archipelago are much more civilized than the city-folks...

Thanks for the input. Hope you're closer to truth than I was.

Before I moved to Bangkok, I have been the chair of department of Computer Information Systems and a Computer Science Professor in Saraburi province. If you are well qualified, English should not be the only subject you can teach. I have colleagues who are specialized in different areas including: Nursing, Education and Psychology, Botany, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Religious Studies, Business including: Accounting, Management, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship. Also, you'll get paid well.

As a startup and without any teaching experience, but with a Masters Degree, you could start anywhere between 20-30k per month.

  8. In my opinion, I think you should attempt to befriend your employees. Whether they are Thai or farang, a good move would be to involve yourself with their work problems. Coming late to work should not be very significant if the job is well-done. Otherwise, I think you can attempt to approach the concerned personnel personally and talk to him/her about any issues or problems they are currently facing.

By realizing you care for them and for their issues, these staff will pay more respect to you, their job, and the organization.

  9. To: All Employees

From: The program of SPECIAL HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING (S.H.I.T.)

    Date: TODAY

    Re: S.H.I.T.

In order to assure the highest levels of quality

work and productivity from employees, it will be

our policy to keep all employees well trained

through our program of SPECIAL HIGH

    INTENSITY TRAINING ( S.H.I.T.).

We are trying to give our employees more

S.H.I.T. than anyone else. If you feel that you

do not receive your share of S.H.I.T., please see

your supervisor. You will be immediately placed

at the top of the S.H.I.T. list, and our supervisors

are especially skilled at seeing that you get all

    the S.H.I.T. you can handle.

Employees who don't take their S.H.I.T. seriously

will be placed in DEPARTMENTAL EMPLOYEE EVALUATION PROGRAMS (D.E.E.P.S.H.I.T.) .

Those who fail to take D.E.E.P.S.H.I.T. seriously

will have to go to EMPLOYEE ATTITUDE TRAINING (E.A.T.S.H.I.T.).

Since our supervisors took S.H.I.T. before they

were promoted, they don't have to take S.H.I.T.

anymore, and are all full of S.H.I.T. already. If

you too are full of S.H.I.T. , you may be interested

in a job teaching others. We can add your name

to our BASIC UNDERSTANDING LIST of LEADERS (B.U.L.L.S.H.I.T.) .

    Thank you,

BOSS IN GENERAL, SPECIAL HIGH INTENSITY TRAINING

    (B.I.G.S.H.I.T.)

  10. Just thought I should add the location of Chok Chai outside Bangkok is not really all the way to Korat. It is actually right near Pak Chong - which is about 18 Km from Muak Lek, which is turn is about 40 Km from downtown Saraburi. I used to live there.

I'd suggest you go up to the farm since they've got lots of things for display and for entertainment.

Even though your advice is given with all good intent it's not quite correct Chok Chai is indeed close to Korat (old name) Yes you do turn off at Pak Chok veering left then swinging right for about 40 kms to the town of Chok Chai - it depends upon what you want to visit as quite naer Chok Chai is a small town where old time pottery art is still practised.

Refer to BambinA map reference and it will plonk you right in the middle of town I am sure.

Thanks for the comment. I should have checked what the OP was looking for. Someone was referring to the ChokChai Farm and hence my comments were only referring to the that farm.

  11. 180 Km on the Bangkok-Saraburi highway once. I normally drive that distance twice a week. If I go slow, I tend to feel sleepy. I must admit, I felt like the car was floating on the road. I almost felt like I was losing control - but again you remember Senna's adage: 'if you're in control, you're just not going fast enough.' :o

  13. Thanks for the message. Does your wife have any job? Did they ask for her salary documents in order to find out how much she is earning per month?

She has a small convience shop on the ground floor of the shophouse and rents rooms upstairs but never makes much of a profit, max around 10K per month I guess but does not keep proper records to prove it. Although she can show about 100K per month going in and out of her bank account from the money i deposite for expences ect. She was not asked to show employment documents.

Thanks for the reply. It's been quite helpful. I'm going to try this out and see what happens.

  14. It is possible if you have 50% deposit.

I have a friend just got a 50% motgage over 15 years from SCB.

I thought it wasnt possible at all, but i was wrong.

    Hi Moonfruit,

Could you elaborate? Does your friend have a work permit? Is he a resident or something alike? Was the loan made under his wife name or his? As many details as possible would really help. I would be very interested as I am very keen to buy a condo I found, unfortunately I only have a few more than half of the amount. Thanks in advance.

    Alex

My wife was just at Krung bank in Pattaya yesturday and was told that she could get a 50% mortgage by using me as a guarentor, she brought the paperwork home that shows the required documents, my bank statement for the last 6 months (US bank) my last pay slip, passport with visa (she explained that I do not have a type "O" only a tourist visa and they said it is OK) maraige licence (again she explained that we are not legaly married but they told her that would be OK too, we just need to show the kids birth certificate naming me as the father) also her bank books, the house book for our condo and the shop house ect. I'm a bit skeptical, I don't see how the bank can use me as a guarentor with only a tourist visa but she assured me that she brought it up several times and the bank manager told her he understood and could still grant the loan. Seems it is a new law that has only been in effect for a few days???

  15. AIA is quite reputable as you may already know. You can combine a medical insurance with a savings plan, which I have recently joined. It is quite worth it as you will get your money back after some time - it doesn't go to waste.

You can also check BUPA - they are quite reputable.

  16. I have been living and working legally in Thailand for past 6 years. I have been married to a Thai citizen for the past 3 years. I currently work fulltime but she is currently still a college student. We have been wanting to get a loan from a bank to buy a house/condo. I understand that loans are only available for Thai citizens. I also do know of a farang who was able to get a loan using his wife's name though she is not currently working. I don't know how much the law has changed in regards to that.

Is there any way I can apply for a home loan even though I'm not a thai citizen? Do you have any suggestions on to go about this?

    Thanks in advance.

  18. Your topic title is quite misleading. Then why should it be in the health section???

Because people who visit the health section are more likely to be hospital patients, and because a computer virus/worm/trojan in a hospital is a threat to the integrity and privacy of their medical records.

    Yes sure.
