Views on this latest action from Trump
Wrwest replied to fredwiggy's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
My number, if I remember correctly was 210. As you say, looked like the next sweep might get me so, I applied for Navy OCS. Went through the steps and qualified. Others had the same idea ... Unlimited Line Officer option closed. Only things open = Nuclear Sub and Supply. With my lack of math ability Subs were out but, hey! Everybody loves a supply officer. Hmm, accountants, bookkeepers ... hmm, where am I? #9 Social Sciences (#10 being "other"). Nixon, bless his pointed head, froze the draft and that was the end of my potential Naval career ... -
Report British Holidaymaker Dies in Bangkok: A Mother’s Heartfelt Warning
Wrwest replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
I had early on discovered I could not become a drug addict. I am a natural, "soft touch" for any pain killers. I told an oral surgeon 9taking out four "wisdom teeth" to be careful with the anesthesia. Yea, OK, how tall are you? How much do you weigh? Right ... I quit breathing ... took four of them to bring me around! I take drugs = I die. -

None of this makes the citation of the current House passed budget Bill untrue. I am not familiar enough to address the 22% of births on Medicaid who were born in the USA nor the 13% born in the USA on Medicaid (using your % citations). You seem fixated on California for some reason. Care to look at where I retired? That would be Kentucky, solidly voting Republican among the highest Medicaid state recipients. Block grants will equate with no fraud and abuse? OK, let's hone in a bit. We agree on addressing waste, fraud and abuse. We may differ on my wanting documented, factual findings publicly presented and the perps brought to justice (we might agree on the last bit). Not a problem to require looking for work ... you agree to funding enough social workers to file and follow through on checking eligibility to work and not cutting off healthcare were there are not available jobs (I have to draw the line somewhere if 'involuntary servitude" is in the picture. I am a retired history educator, my income (family of 3) falls in line to qualify me for Medicaid ... would you say, the vegetable picking available job must be taken? (OK, actually I am retired so Medicare ... oops. no coverage living in a lower cost country ... never mind).
-
No, in answer to your two questions as that was not what was being addressed. I neither agree nor disagree ... much in line with if you had asked if I quit beating my wife. US court Decisions stand unless overturned for cause on appeal. The US Supreme Court weighs in only on Constitutional issue rulings which seem to be a prevalent challenge by trump (that is he is purposefully tease the US Constitution).

Your posting "... goes back into the ether or soul." Sent me back to reflecting, was it not Plato who thought that we are all on a pilgrimage in the life and would rejoin the Devine essence upon death?

The currently passed Republican majority House of Representatives Budget Bill.

Oh, look over there! A bird ... Please stay on the topic at hand. If you want a Biden issues thread ... have at it.

I already stated, I support addressing immigration as a recognized issue. Just carry out policy in line with the legal constructs which the courts are stating as not being followed.
-
Ironic, isn't it? Watch the reaction to the Medicad, education cuts as they affect the poorer states most (yep, like my home state Kentucky, they vote Republican).
-
The documented facts dealing with income/wealth distribution over the past decades does not support your supposition.

Well Mike, you might want to recognize that in the USA currently, working at one of those available jobs will not equal the cost of food, clothing, shelter and medical care. Where is the system encouraging the working middle class? In retirement, my family of three falls within the qualification for food stamps. Fortunately, recognizing I cannot afford to be retired in my own country, I joined millions of other Americans "outsourced" in retirement to lower cost countries.

The immigration issue goes back decades and is the result of BOTH parties kicking the can down the road. Observe Constitutionally guaranteed "due process" and, if found guilty, I have no problem with deporting back to their home country, in fact, I encourage. Again, the catch is the method being used as unconstitutional unilaterally dictated by trump. No, I do not recognize that he can void the RIGHT of Habeas Corpus for any PERSON subject to US law.

I'll join in on this. I do also note the hypocrisy, however, in attacking Michelle Obama's trying to improve school lunchs being attacked as government ver reach and now? Bottom line for me is both the goal and the method being used to reach for the goal ... that may be applied to over issues needing government to address in the interests of the citizens.

Relocating to Chiang Mai, worried about burning season
Wrwest replied to DonniePeverley's topic in Chiang Mai
14 years a full time resident of Chiang Mai. The "smoky season" varies by year and I think you can find the annual comparison online. Some years we spent a month out of the city. But most years ... air conditioned house to air conditioned car to air conditioned stores. For school attendance ... hmm, but then school break toward the end of the smoke. Do read the comments here as responses will vary. -
Not surprising that I agree that if any change is to come, it should be from the Thai citizens, However, as a retired educator, I do not think it is wrong to discuss various approaches to social cohesion and fairness. I submit that the western approach has a better balance in this matter. If I call someone a thief and they are a thief ... too bad, no compensation for telling the truth. If I call you a thief and you are not ... fair game to charge me with slander or libel (depending on spoken or written accusation). Court case to determine if my accusation is correct. If not ... compensation due. Like you, I shy away from public seen ratings.

When was the last time that you spoke with a foreigner?
Wrwest replied to simon43's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Yesterday, we ate a Philly CheeseSteak hoagie from Cheesetober here in Chiang Mai. Heard a foreigner at a table speak so I asked where in the states he was from ... N. California. I joked that I thought California was close to the USA and went on to say how much I liked traveling in the US Pacific NW (Washington, Oregon and N. California). He was retired military still doing some work in the Philippines. By the way, I was raised in the Philly area and can recommend the Philly CheeseSteaks at Cheesetober ... no connection with them other than a being a new customer. -
Certainly a double edged sword. AI has great positive potential as is currently being scene but it does also pose a great threat. So much turns on the individuals and the motivationbehind the use. Right now there are countries where we are witnessing the "policing" of the general populace to target "anti-social" persons or statements such as questioning/attacking official government policy ...
