  1. my Thai friend is a motor trader, he works on a first year devaluation of 30% then 10% pa thereafter.

Buying new is a mugs game .

Just offer them 50% of the new value for the 6 month old car then walk away and wait for the phone to ring.

There are so many new cars sold here to people who relly cannot keep up the payments,

There are some very good half priced 6 month old cars available her if you forget that you are a rich farang and use your head.

if you see any vigo 3.0d4d autos at half the new price at 6 months old im your man ! ill take them all :o

Recently saw a chevy colorado 4 door, leather, etc... 2007 model (7 months old IIRC) asking 400k...

I really think the flood of new vehicles bought on credit payments that cant be met is compressing the market from the top down and all these guys who are buying new now with the 'it wont depreciate much' thinking will not get what they expect..

You forgot that Chevy is unpopular in Thailand, even it's the same as Isuzu. Thais don't accept Chevrolet. But Isuzu, Toyota (Market Cars) you never get for half of the price after 6 months

  2. I'm not native english speaking. So i try to explain: In the front of the compressor in the poulie is a electric coil, wich make a magnetic field and so it is like a clutch and the poulie will lock up and the compressor statrs work, or the clutch will relese the poulie when the electric get cut by thermostart, switch ,etc. So if the electric power comes to the "clutch" the compressor start working, but if the compressor is nocked down, the clutch coil can start burnig easly and with a lot of steam, when the Gas come out from the compressor (the gas not burn, just steaming), then all looks like a fire. I had the same problem once in a Hyundai Sonata and the compressor coil catch fire.

  3. It's correct. Many times fuel get stolen, when the car is parked outside overnight, outside of a garage or in the aoutside area ow a work shop.

Burning: It look like your AC copmressor is knocked down. Ti's can happen any time. I guess your AC was filled up. Before the compressor not work, becahue no freon gas inside, so there is a electric valve which disconnect the AC compressor when the gas is below the minimum level. It is not only the freon gas, there is also oil in the system. So they filled up freon and your AC compressor statrt working, maybe the bearing knocked and even the coil in the front of the compressor poulie start bruning. If you notice this you have to STOP the AC imidently and you can drive without trouble. But if you keep the AC on, when the coul start burning your car can catch on fire easly. I know this is bad luck, but no one can know when the compressor gonna knock and the coil get fire. can happen any time. The same thing can happen if a fuelhose blow next to the ignition coil for example and the car catch on fire. Can happen any time.

  4. For 500'k you get a very basic "Japs". No air bags, no ABS, steel wheels with plastic wheel covers, and nothig inside. You have to spend at least 650'k if you want fully loaded. You buy a 10 year old Crysler Neon or a Volkswagen Passat for example you get 2 air bags, ABS, automatic, alloy wheels, etc for about 150'k. Sure you are right parts are more expensive, but you have to look the condition carefully, when you buy a used car. Don't buy a "Lemon". If you like style, spend a little bit more and buy a Audi A4 (2 air bags) or a Nissan Cefiro (sometimes one air bag). Very good cars, much more safety than a Jazz or Yaris, a liitle bit bigger and no problems at all. Remind if you buy a used car, check the condition very carefully.

  5. Brand new car would be the cheapest, very small depreciation, warranty etc..

I think not. Buy a 10 to 15 year "Non Japanese Car" (Japanese cars are very expensive in the Used Car market, therefore buy a "Non Japanese Car), like for example a Hyundai Accent or Elantra, Peugeot or something like them. They are arround 150' k for a good one and afther 3 years you still get a 100'k for it, if you sell it. Depreciation 50'k repairs and maintenance maybe another 50'k. 3rth party Insurance 3'000 Baht and taxes maybe another 15'k. So you'll drive for about 115'000 Baht for the next 3 years, it is 3'200 Baht per month. This is the cheapest way to drive.

BTW you can get full insurance for a older car for only about 7'000 Baht by 'Akane" Insurance

  7. Even if you have a registered Company and WP, you are not 100% Safe. You can only do what is written on your Jop description. I. E. if you are director of your company and you have a bookshop, you can't sale books to your customer by your self. They can look you up for this. You need sales staff to do this work, because you are foeigner and you can't get "Salesman" on your jop description in your WP. You can not work outside your office. For example it is not possibile to talk outside your office with some customers, except if its written in your WP, that you can work inside and outside your office arround Bangkok area, for example.

  8. Yes you are ccorrect to make a choice of a rear wheel drive. Front wheel drive cars have always troubles with suspension, engine mounts, drive shafts, etc. Allways have to invest at least 20'000 Baht in all this things if you buy a used "FWD" The other thing: "FWD" cars are not smooth as "RWD". "RWD's" are much easier to maintenance. Buy a "Valta", its a good choice, or mayb e consider a older Toyota Crown. The Crown is a very good car. I bought once one with over 400'000 km on the clock and the condition was excellent. Mosthly Crowns use the same engine like in the Volta, the 1 JZ or the 2 JZ. Crowns you can get arround 150'000 Baht for a good one if the year is arround 1990 until 1992. For a 1993 up Model you have to consider arround 280'000 Baht. Crowns have all the options and luxury, almost like a small Cadillac. Easy and cheap in maintenance, very luxury satin interior, electric seats, Cool box in the rear, 2 AC Systems, front and back, etc. just make it sure it not was a Taxi before. If you buy Crown, get the Top Model as "Royal Saloon" Don't buy the Deluxe one. The Price it's anyway almost the same, so get the Top one. If you buy a Volta, go for the 940 one, not the 740, this is the older one. Benz i woud not consider, to expensive to maintenance.

  9. Spare part is not a big problem today. I owned several US Cars in Thailand and all you have to do is ordering one line over the Internet, with a credit card and they delivery parts via DHL, or somone else or Post Office (for smaller parts) directly to your home. But anyway i think new parts are availiabile in Thailand. I had the Colden Calais 3.8 liter and got every parts from Bangkok, even body parts, like headlights, taillights, etc. And the big suprise was: They aren't expensive. For example: I payd for a set of spark plug cables (6 pieces original ones, becaue is a 6 cylinder) only for 1350 Baht, For a 98 Toyota Corona cost this 4500 Baht (original ones and they are only 4 pieces, because a 4 cylinder). So don't worry for parts. If i would spend arround 2 mill for a car, the Lumina would be my first choice.

  10. If the foglights are connected correctly, it wouln't be happen. They have to turn off automaticly when you torn off the headlight switch. But i never understand why in Thailand they connect them to a seperate switch and not connect the N0. 85 of the foglight relais with the position light switch.

I do not know of a single vehicle in which the headlights/fog lights are turned off when the ignition is turned off. Even current vehicles don't do this although they may have a 'lights on' warning system for when the ignition is turned off.

I not talk about ignition switch, i talk about the connection to the headlight switch. In Europe are all foglights connected with the positionlight. So if you turn the position light off, the foglights are automaticly turned off. Separate switch for the foglights works only if the positionlights are on. In off modus they don't work.

  11. It's a GM engine, as you can find in millions of GM Cars, like Chevrolet, Buick, Olds, or Holden etc. The engine has quite good power, more than japanese market cars, the 4 speed transmission is very well in the combination with the engine. I had a couple Holdens and Buicks with the same engine. I even had a Buick with a 3.8 liter Supercharged engine, but the power it's not much different. The 3.8 liter have no problems at all, the only thing what sometime go wrong is the fuel pump relais or the ignition coils. Not expensive to replace it. Generally it is a very strong engine, easy to maintenance, but of corse it uses a little bit more of gasoline than normal car. The lumina still is rear wheel drive, so this make things even more easy to maintenance. In Thailand peaple not really know about this car s therefore it will be hard if you want to sell it later. But if you like power and looking to keep this car for a long time, it will be the best choice to buy this car.

  12. they can do almost anything here, i had a bmw e30 with atoyota 1 g engine and all was fine...but if its rear wheel drive you have to see if they put in the proper final drive ratio at the rear axle...shocks too..

Only rear wheel drive, in front wheel drive cars you'll get many problems with the drive shafts and mounts. Make sure all the dash board gauges work properly (speedo can be different), make sure there are no vibrations when you drive the car in high speed and on excelleration.

I fitted a Range Rover with a lexus V8 engine. The result was excellent. But sometime you need a lot of modifications and if Mister "Somchai" understand his job, than it's ok. But if the modifications are not professional done you will end in a nightmare.

  13. yeah i'd like to know if anyone has been to an auction like this in thailand.... stories?

    G'Day mate

there has been guys but i never heard that any one actually has got car from there,, if some one has let me know as i do plan to go there...

Yes i got a car, back in 1994, it was a Chevrolet Camaro Z28 year 1982. I got this car for 325'000 Baht for a car whick is about 800 Dollar worth in the USA, and of corse had to repair and respray the whole car. which was worth for me, because i love american cars. But i got it only because it was left hand drive and not many peaple was interested to get it. If you think to get a nice Benz or Toyota, just forget it, because there are to many dealers who "know" how to get them. By the way it takes my a hard way to get the papers and the license plates for the car. I would never do it again, to much troubles.
