Yesterday there was a story about a Swedish bloke getting thrown in a ditch by three Tai Yai kids. Some of our bar stool posters who predictably rant about Thais jumped on this and seem to be confused. Tai Yai are a seperate ethnic group with no home country and as such are spread throughout Laos, Northern Thailand, Southern China and Myanmar. They have their own cuisine, traditions, culture, language, dance, music etc. They are not Thai. Even if they are born in Thailand they dont recieve a Thai ID card, but get a special one. They are also restricted like other foreigners in what jobs they are allowed to do and even travelling to other parts of Thailand is restricted. They are nice people.
