  1. My options so far;

Can buy new without too much hassle - downpayment and then around 19/20k month - I’ve looked at 36/48 months - I would have to pay off and sell if I was to leave Thailand before then.

    car options:

    Honda brv

    toyota veloz

    mitsubishi expander

    mg zs

interest goes from 0% to 1,99 to 2,19…..

I’m still looking at possibility of buying from toyotasure - trusted secondhand - they seem to have LOADS of expanders or Toyota chr - also a few Toyota cross - process range from 500 to 800.

Again we are a family of 4 with 2 young kids that’s why I like the suv type also like being higher off the ground with Bangkok traffic etc.

which of those cars is best value, will be able to sell later on etc?

like idea of electric but for my temporary stay of a few years I don’t think it’s worth it.

Thanks - I know nothing about cars so recommendations are very helpful!’

Really, wow, I did the math on buying a new car 8 years ago just before I purchased my new car back then. It went like this:

Car cost 800k baht with a years registration and 1st class insurance, plus some other things thrown in. 2 sets of replacement tyres, oil changes, and a little maintenance. I didn't include services, registration, insurance and fuel costs as they are normal costs associated when driving the car.

So if I added 200,000 to the purchase price that would take it to a mil baht, now I would say I could get 400,000 baht for the car as it's a one owner and well looked after, that said, the cost for that car would be 600,000 baht over 8 years = 75,000 baht over 12 months = 6,250 baht or 200 baht per day if you like.

That to me is better than renting one for 16,000 baht per month, because you own it, you drive it, you maintain it and you know your cars reliability.

How much would a lease cost you per month, noting that none of it would be recouped at the end of the lease.

Much much less, really, what 50% plus associated running costs, please enlighten me as to cost of your lease for an 8 year period for example.

It's easy to spew out words, but the math and a lot of others factors shows a clearer picture.

Well we don't know about that, because he could buy a 2nd hand car that is well maintained like mine and continue to enjoy it for a few years to come, e.g. 2, 3, 4 year and more.

If he purchased it for 400,000 baht and resold it 4 years later for say 100,000 baht, he would have spent 300,000 baht excluding the other associated costs that I mentioned that are standard with driving a car.

So doing the math, it reverts back to what it cost me per month, i.e. 6,250 baht per month or 200 baht per day, now I will wait for those leasing figures of yours per month thanks ????

Thanks, are you saying in my situation where I’m not sure if I’ll be here 2,3 or 4 years it makes sense to buy new or secondhand or rent?

We have the MG ZS, and quite happy with that.  Had the ZS ICE version prior to.

MG EP Plus is well worth a peak, not a SUV, but specs are fairly identical.  ZS a bit taller, EP a bit longer.

    ZS ... ฿949k

    EP ... ฿771k

What would you say is BAD about having an electric? I saw an MG electric suv st

mega Bangna the other day and it was around 800,000k - looked futuristic.

but in Europe everyone says not enough infrastructure yet - guess here it’s worse?

how do you charge it at home?

How often do you have to charge?

what if you go on a road trip?

is it harder to sell in the future?

I think he [brainthainess] meant that you get a 2 year licence  instead of a 5 year licence as pointed out by KhunBENQ...

Usually someone would get a 2 year temporary licence, then when renewing they’d get a *5 year licence - It is possible that as the Op is 6 months ‘late’ he may only be able to renew to a 2 year Temp licence again.

*An additional facet of renewal is visa type - at most DLT offices someone with a tourist visa or visa exempt stamp will only get a 2 year visa anyway, even when renewing.

[mileage does vary and different DLT’s handle things in a different way so there is no one size fits all rule].

Ah ok, which office should I go to? I live in bangna area, close to mega bangna - think officially samut prakan - should I look for a dlt office close to me?

  5. Expat with family, wife and 2 kids. Arrived in august, not sure if we will be here 2 years or 3 or 4.
Definitely need a car. Currently renting for 16k month.

Two good salaries - currently we rent car and save 1 salary and a bit of the other - we use money to send back home for mortgage and to invest in private pension.

    should we:

A.keep renting for however many years we are in Thailand.

    B. Buy a second hand car from a place like toyotasure on a loan - will allow us to continue investing in our pensions back home

    C. Buy a new car on a loan - will continue to allow us to invest in our home pensions.

    D. Stop investing in our pensions for 5/6 months and try to save 600k to buy a car from a trustworthy secondhand place like toyotasure with cash.

My doubts are mainly because it’s s good time to invest and if I was to save to buy a car outright it would mean saving for 6 months - so not investing.

Also- what car? I’ve looked at the Mitsubishi xpander - toyotasure “sure” have a lot of them for around 600 to 800k. Also looked at the Toyota chr or the veloz - but that’s too long I think. Also the Honda Brv.

Anyway - what should we do?!

For each licence. Car & Motorbike.

Passport &  copy of passport ID page

    Residence Certificate

    Old Licence

    Medical Certificate.

i think that's it, but there may be more. You can Google it.

Oh and dress smart. I have seen people turned away at my local DMV centre for dressing scruffy.

i usually just wear long trousers and a polo shirt.

    Thanks!!

do I need to go twice? First time for a cue number?? Then go back another day?

Take photocopies of everything. Don't forget to take two of everything if you are renewing both car and motorbike licences.

    Thanks this is very helpful!

if someone can please confirm if I need to first go and get a que number?

    then return on another day?

also, what is needed? Documents wise?

finally - do I need to do the online qr thing to renew??

    thanks

  8. Si my 2 year license expired in August. Can I renew it myself? I live close to mega bangna which I think is samut prakan.

I was quoted 3000 by an agent.
can I do this myself? I have a residence letter from my embassy and a work permit.

with zero Thai is it worth trying to do myself or not?

if so does anyone have any recent experience and can share the steps? Also where I need to go? What I need?

    Thanks!

Buy the Mazda CX30. It is a great choice. Feels luxurious. Well appointed and alot of quality. Not cheap at 1.2 million for the top model. But worth it. Great sound system too.

The MG is poor quality. Looks nice. But, it is much  like a fake Rolex. Looks nice on the outside, but not alot of build quality. Cheap Chinese stuff. The Hondas are very boring compared to the Mazda, which is a joy to drive.

Also, I would never consider buying another vehicle without cruise control, or a heater. This has both.

@KhunLA is the MG a fake Rolex?

also I’ve heard they have like 5 years warranty and that it’s transferable if you buy second hand - any ideas? Warranty on what?

    thanks

I was looking at small SUV's and ended up buying a Mazda CX3 because it had a 2 litre engine and was cheapish (850K baht) in that soft small SUV segment. I am so sure how the CX3 even managed to be classed as a soft SUV.

This vehicle suffers from loss of luggage capacity, important if you have 2 x children and want to travel.

We live in Bangkok so rarely ended up using it as the public transport is good, so we have done less that 6 000km in our vehicle since 2021. If outside of Bangkok I would use it more. Having children makes a vehicle more appealing though, doesn't it.

I recommend that if you want cheaper options that you look at a couple of the second hand vehicle websites as there are some reasonably priced second hand vehicles. I have seen a few second hand Nissan Xtrails cheap which are pretty reasonable 4 x 4 small SUV's. Look at Kaidee for example to compare new versus second hand pricing.

But would a second hand place give me finance? What about a place like toyotasure, do they give finance?

  11. Looking for a small family SUV- reliable and easy to sell when we move on from Thailand. Family of 4 - 2 small kids.

looking at Toyota veloz, Honda brv or hrv or one of the Mazdas. Also the MG zs or maybe even a Mitsubishi expander?

don’t want to spend too much - not sure we will even get financing as expats newish to the country.

    thanks.

  12. I need a car - currently renting and paying 16k month. I don’t have the money saved up to buy cash now - can I buy through a loan? Monthly payments? Only at current job for 5 months, both the wife and I are working - we are expats.

second, my drivers license expired in august - I need to renew it. Will I have problems? Can I renew it or will they make me do tests etc again because it expired in august?

    thanks
