  1. Indeed. If we listened to all these 'experts', we'd want to die sooner anyway.
  2. I'd say China. The days of admiration for the West are gone. Thailand sees China as a rising star, and the US as a fading one. Add to this the fact that Thais, Asians, and most of the non-Anglophone world, are socially conservative: Many consider modern Western culture to be repulsive, and have no wish to emulate it.
  3. Using ad hominem slurs like 'CCP troll' is intellectually lazy. You might sound more compelling if you bothered to participate in the debate.
  4. Seems Thailand is looking to join BRICS too. Sign of the times. https://www.silkroadbriefing.com/news/2022/11/09/the-new-candidate-countries-for-brics-expansion/
  5. Diplomacy does involve some of that, yes. But it's a lot better than starting wars with all and sundry, like the US is so fond of doing.
  6. Chinese may actually make a lot more sense, which will happen after a polite and diplomatic pause, as the reality of the US' foreign wars all ending in adject defeat and humiliation finally sinks in. Like it or lump it, the US is a spent force, and China is poised to take over the entire region.
  7. Sydney northern beaches: 5
  8. It's a journalistic habit of using emotionally charged language to describe everyday things.
  9. A neutral one. I'd say he realises that the Ukraine war is regional, and is none of Thailand's business.
  10. Thailand should stay neutral, and politely ignore the US if the latter expects Thailand to take sides. Thailand and China handle diplomacy much better than the US does.
  11. Right. Democracy has its flaws. Looking at the degenerate western world, maybe Thailand is better off with the status quo.
  12. I once flew Nok Air from Bangkok to Hua Hin and back on a Cessna Caravan. Seated right behind the pilot, and looking over his shoulder, it was a great experience.
  13. Som tam should be number 1. Nothing beats it with some salted egg.
  14. So a proper politician is one who can cover up corruption better than an improper one. I can't argue with that ????
  15. Show me a country where democracy exists and I'll sell you a bridge.
  16. We should at least make sure that changes are for the better, rejecting changes that aren't. Change for its own sake seems to lead to chaotic disintegration of societies, as we're seeing in the western world.
  17. All governments do good and bad things. All I really want is a peaceful society that values its culture and heritage. Oh wait, that's what we've got now, so why all this change for the sake of change? We came to Thailand because we preferred it to the places we left. Many people here seem to want to turn Thailand into the (pretty ghastly) western world.
  18. Well the status quo in Thailand really isn't that bad. It's much better than when marauding thugs were setting fire to department stores.
  19. Service agents routinely look up visa requirements and check them before they'll give you a boarding pass. I agree that collecting the 300 Baht at check in would be problematic, but this (or its foreign currency equivalent) could either be collected at Thai immigration, or simply added on to the ticket price. It really isn't rocket science that we're dealing with here.
  20. I first came when Prem was in charge. Some may say he wasn't too bad, but others would call him a military strongman. Who fits your definition of a proper politician? Thaksin jacked up the price of visas, and PR went up from 25k to 250k ....
  21. All I'm doing is forecasting the future, based on countless past experiences. Keep dreaming if it makes you feel better.
  22. The young will be sent for "attitude adjustment" in army camps, or forcefully cleared from the streets, just like every time before. It's a ritual that goes back many decades. Maybe it's not a bad thing - who wants Thailand to be like the West? People move to Thailand because it's different, right?
  23. Most countries practice autocracy and repression these days, in one way or another, so it's a bit unfair to single out Thailand.
  24. Thailand has much more to its economy than tourism.
