Some schools in Thailand are changing, the school I help to run is a 'new concept school' in it's 3rd year of opening. We teach and explain the '7-habits of leadership' from Stephen Covey which encourages the students to be leaders, ask questions, set goals and take control of their learning. Education is changing in Thailand..........albeit very slowly!

I returned from Laos (Savannakhet in March 2020 cross the friendship bridge. I had a 1 year spousal visa (leave every 90-days requirement) then took a job as a teacher and am on a non-B for teaching. That ends this month, so I'm trying to find my options. I don't find any information that answers my specific questions, so I reached out here. I am married, but I'm not comfortable dropping 400k baht in a Thai bank for 90 days to get the Non-O marriage visa from Chaeng Wattana. Can't convert the current non-B to an ed visa, so... not sure at all what to do.
If you are on a NON B visa already and you want to continue teaching then the school/company can extend the visa in their/your local immigration every year if you are working/teaching with them. However if your contract ends this month and you are not renewing then the Non B extension is not an option unless you find new employment before the end of the month.

I have applied for my licence and be asked the following :- a copy of the equivalence of educational qualification "Diploma in Teaching Education" from the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation.
You can contact the Office of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation. for ask about The equivalent of educational qualificationI have tried to phone but no answer, will continue to try. Has anyone had to do this? I have a DIPTED with St Roberts Philippine Christian University, I presume i need some sort of acknowledgement of this? I have already provided copies and the original letter of certification. I would be interested to know if anyone has been asked to do this and the procedure. They have also advised me I need to wait for a test, however it appears these are done at the beginning and the end of each year. My last waiver runs out in July! What a great system. I hope they will give me a waiver again if I have to wait for a test.

They said that due to the covid lockdown, they were finding it hard to recruit foreign teachers to the school. I asked the salary and they told me 30k a month.
I was surprised because I remember a teacher from the school telling me a few yrs ago that they pay 40k a month. I think they noticed I was surprised about the low salary
and then said that after a while the salary can get increased.
Surely its a supply / demand situation and if they are desperate they should just pay the higher salaries from the start? 30k a month is very low and I think its a 10 to 20 year old government salary level.
I would like to earn above 40k a month to satisfy the requirements for permanent residency.
cheers
Jack
After living and teaching in Thailand for the past 18 years. It is clear salaries differ depending on your nationality regardless of your ability and qualifications in teaching or English. 30k to a Filipino/Asian would be a very high salary for most, a starting salary for a majority of our coloured African friends and many Europeans where English is a second language a little low for a white south African (around 35k) and low for a native speaker (40k). I must stress this is only my observations and not my opinion of what salaries should be. My advice to you ( if you are a native speaker) is to go back and advise them you would be happy to teach for them but the minimum salary should be 37500 during any probation period ( say 3 months) during this time they need to secure you a work permit and Non B Visa at the schools expense. Once probation is complete (hopefully satisfactory) the salary should be 40kpm. Check also holidays are paid!. There are many jobs available at the moment. Good luck

What about the second South African strain.... very bad and spreads quickly YET the government is allowing ENglish Program and International schools to hire These South African teachers????
makes no sense!!
where are the Thai parents or don’t they know the strain is from South Africa????
Come on Man!
What a crazy statement. Firstly many South African teachers have been residing in Thailand for a long time, way before Covid arrived and secondly any teachers that may be hired from South Africa would go through numerous checks as well as quarantine before entering any school to teach, as would anybody from any country. Your comment makes no sense!!

I would presume the people/students surveyed were educated in the government school system as a majority of students learning in International and Private Thai schools can speak basic English. In government schools, Thai students are not nationally tested on their speaking skills. The English test involves a number of multiple choice questions, so they know they can just guess the answers, so don't pay attention in class. Teaching speaking and listening effectively to a class of 50-60 students in a Government school is virtually impossible. The only way the English proficiency will go up for the average Thai student is a complete restructure of the national tests, smaller classes in Government schools, and better facilities, training and evaluations for teachers.

As he has a work permit, he is probably paying social security. If he is paying it then medical care is free.
If you work for a company and they pay for the government health scheme for you (sometimes you pay 50% around 300-400baht) then yes you are covered. However many companies don't do this for you, just paying tax in Thailand does not necessarily mean your medical care is free.

<deleted> on giving migrant status to people who buy a condo, what about people who get married and buy property and build a home?
That's right many people (including myself) are married to a Thai, have families, property in the wife's/husband's name and have been here many years but we have to 'jump through numerous hoops' to get a yearly visa! How about an easier residence status for those of us in this category, we probable will spend/have spent millions over the years towards the Thai economy!

So schools have been shut down for basically 3 months, then they open for 3 days and get shutdown again for another week. Plus many workers will be unpaid for this amazing holiday, after being on food handouts for 2-3 months.
Plus of course the hundreds that will die on the roads.. some of these politicans are absolute morons.
Yes, there is no need for this holiday this year. However if they decide it should happen it should be done the 1st - 5th. Then schools can open from Monday the 6th.
-
So if you work as many do as teachers. You would have to take every monday off to report your address if you like to travel at the weekend. I am sure schools would love this, not!! Online reporting is a joke and the queues at immigration means it takes ages.

The daughter needs a visa.
If she does not have one she will overstay but will not be fined.
If one of the parents has an extension of stay from immigration the girl can get the same extension as a dependent.
Thanks, this is confusing me as I also have Fillipino colleagues with young children who do not get them any visas and go in and out of the country with out any problems on their Fillipino passports. They tell me there is no problem until they become 15? If the child gets an extension of stay the same as the parent as a dependant do they have to pay the 1900bt? Is this question answered on any immigration website?

Hi my friend is obtaining her work permit and non B visa for her teaching position on Friday. She also has a 20 month old daughter ( she and her husband are both foreigners on valid visas here), she asked me about the visa for her daughter. Am i right in thinking she does not need to obtain a visa for her daughter until she reaches the age of 15 she can stay as her mother and father have valid visas?

Went to Samutprakan Immigration office today. The staff member involved was very nice and helpful. There was a simple form to fill in, needed to supply photocopies of some passport pages and it cost 300 baht. They said they would post it to my home address and I would get it tomorrow. This was ok with me and I didn't ask to collect it as I was in a rush. I hope to receive it tomorrow?

Thanks for the replies much appreciated. It is needed because the car was bought with finance and was in the bank's name until I paid of the loan. That has now been done and the bank will transfer the car into my name first so I can then own it and sell it as I wish. The procedure for transfering into my name requires the certificate of residence.
-
I've sold my car and need to supply the bank with a residence certificate to get the car registration documents ( so they tell me). My address is registered with Samutprakan Immigration and has been for some years. Can i get a residence certificate from them? Or do i have to go to my embassy? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm helping my school with a new teachers visa and he has a 60 day tourist we want to convert to Non B. I am under the impression he can do this in an immigration office in Thailand. This is what i think i need or need to do. Can someone clarify this?
Apply for a work permit first – Have at least 21-30 days left on your tourist visa before applying for Non B
Passport or travel document with validity of not less than 6 months
- Completed visa application form
- Recent passport-sized photograph (4 x 6 cm) of the applicant taken within the past 6 months.
- Letter of acceptance from the school in Thailand.
- Letter of approval from the MOE
- Evidence of educational qualification such as diplomas or teaching certificates.
- School license and director ID
- Applicant’s resume.
- Police clearance certificate.
In the past we have sent teachers to Laos for their Non B but if we can go to the local immigration it would save a lot of time and expense.
Any suggestions and help would be appreciated.

As soon as the renewal process has started then the current passport is cancelled. However as I said, from my ow personal experience, the UK Immigration cannot refuse entry to a UK citizen.
This is correct and if she has a valid travel document as in the Thai passport then in theory there should not be a problem. The issue is the airline she is flying with need to ensure she is able to enter the country of destination as they are subject to a large fine if they allow people to fly without the correct documentation/visa etc. If you explain the situation it should not be a problem, however make sure the flight is direct from Bangkok to UK because if she has a stop off somewhere she is likely to have problems in the stop off country and they may well send her back to Thailand. Best to check with the airline she is flying with as to there procedures.

I have been informed that if you have at least 30 days left on their tourist visa it can be changed to a Non B extension of stay without leaving the country. Is this correct? If so what is the procedure?
I have a new teacher and he has a tourist visa so we need to get a non B and work permit for him.
-
- He will need to leave the country and get a tourist visa (SETV) from a Thai embassy/consulate in a neighbouring country.
- He should have no problem getting a SETV as long as he doesn't have several tourist visas in the recent past. The non 'B' will not affect the application.

A colleague's Non B visa is soon to expire and he is not sure if he will be keep in employment and therefore his visa extended by his employers with a work permit. If it doesn't get extended is he able to get a 60 day tourist visa in Chaeng wattana or does he need to leave the country and if this is the case is he able to get a tourist visa after a non b in a neighbouring country or does he have to return to his home country?
-
If he leaves after midnight on the 18th he will have a 1 day overstay on exit. One day overstay is often not charged but if it is it will be 500 baht.
Thankyou for the information

Has your friend extended the tourist visa by 30 days at immigration ?
Exiting on the 19th will incur an overstay fine.
Yes he did. Ok , is the fine still 500baht? Is it a big problem to overstay nowadays?
-
A colleague of mine will do a trip to Laos soon to convert his tourist visa to a non B. In view of the time involved to secure all the paperwork he won't be able to go until the evening of the 18th of November. He will then cross into Laos the morning of the 19th. My question is the stamp in his passport shows his tourist stay until the 18th November. If he enters Laos on the 19th will he incur 1 day overstay and incur a fee and problems? Or does the stamp mean he can stay in Thailand until the 18th and then he has to renew or leave the country?

Hi, has anyone got any first hand knowledge on the requirement for UK nationals to now have the icpc certificate when applying for a NON B as a teacher? . I have had some reports that all new teachers from the UK need to have this certificate to be granted a Non B visa. Does this also apply to existing UK nationals working as teachers in Thailand. Looking at the website https://www.acro.police.uk/icpc/ it would appear it is reasonably easy to get but costs 60 pounds and may take a few days to arrive, so if i need it i want to apply for it well before my visa is due for renewal.
Also we have a new teacher form the UK going to collect her work permit tomorrow and then get her visa extension. She has a police clearance certificate but i don't think it is this ICPC check certificate what are the chances of her being granted the extension?
