  1. Strickly speaking yes it is, but in reality ( if you are a teaching in schools) it takes some time to get organised. Often teachers come to Thailand on a tourist visa looking for teaching work. When they find work they then need all the paperwork from the school to obtain a Non B (involves waiting for a letter from the education area office), once they have this the schools needs to apply for a teachers licence/ 2 year permit ( involves waiting for the document from Krusapha), once they have this they need to prepare all the paperwork for the work permit. So in fact although it is illegal to work without a permit, teachers often do initially as it usually takes at least 2 months some times longer to get all paperwork completed. T.I.T.

  2. Next week i will start at a new school. They will process a new work permit and subsequent extension of stay. My understanding is when i ( the new school) submit the paperwork for the new workpermit do i the wait for the new book ( 10 days??) before i cancel the old work permit and then go to immigration to cancel my existing extension stay and apply for a new extension of stay. Secondly when i canx my existing work permit do i also need a letter from my old school confirming it should be canx or can i just canx myself? People are telling me i probably need to go out of the country but i'm sure it can be done ( at least used to be) within Thailand. I'm just not sure of the timings etc. I would be grateful if anyone has recently done this and can advise. My immigration office and labour department is in Samutprakan. Thankyou

  3. While still employed at the old school, apply for a new work permit for the new school. Once the paperwork is finished, you can cancel the WP with the old school and receive the WP for the new school at the same time. The same day you go to immigration to cancel your current permission to stay and apply for a new permission to stay based on the new school.

Be sure to get the paperwork in order, especially the teaching license waiver for the new school.

    Thanks Mario.

  4. What's the procedure for changing schools with regard to WP. I understand my new school will need to get a new teachers licence for me in the new schools name, my existing school are quite good and will not cancel my wp immediately, therefore do i then get all the paperwork from my new school and apply for the new work permit at the same time cancelling my wp from my old school? Do i then go to immigration and they cancel my old extension of stay and give me a new stamp? Someone told me i had to go out of the country but surely this is not necessary?

  5. The rules are the same for him as for anybody else.

There are other things that could cause the extension to only be good to October. When does his employment contract end? That could be one reason.

If not he should go back to immigration and ask about it. It would be rare for an immigration office to make such a mistake because they are checked and double checked.

That's right Ubonjoe. I can't work it out. I thought maybe it was his teachers licence expire date, but i checked that and he has a five year valid until 2018 so that;s not the problem. Haven't checked his contract date, didn't know they checked that but this must be ok as the work permit expiry date needs to be the same. It's strange! I will check his documents again and if i can't see anything will go to immigration with him to ask why. Thanks for your input

  6. I suspect the February of 2016 date for the passport is a typo.

Thanks guys. No Ubonjoe it's not an error the passport expires in Feb 2016. This is what has confused me? I thought he should have had the extension of stay until feb 2016. So you think this is an error by immigration? If so maybe he will need to go and see them. He is Fillipino, is there different rules for them????

  7. My colleague recently extended his work permit and subsequently his visa/extension of stay. He did this last month his work permit will expire in Feb 2016. He has noticed his visa has only been extended until oct 2015 and not Feb 2016. On checking his documents i see his passport expires in Feb 2016. I think the reason he only has the visa until oct is that they have to leave 6m of validity on the passport. Am i right? If he applies for his new passport could he then go and get the additional months added to his new passport without the need for another batch of paperwork or fee?

  8. Many English people who live here made money back home by their entrepreneurial skills or sheer hard work. But they still couldn't belong to the upper middle class or join a snooty club. For that they would have needed birth in the right class, public school and Oxbridge education and a "proper' accent ( People will deny it but England is a very class conscious society). And these people, having made money, prefer to live in Thailand where they enjoy a much higher place in society than would have been possible to achieve in England. They can live here almost as if they were in the colonial era without facing any anti-colonial feelings because Thailand was never really a colony. But more recently, the English people with far less money have been arriving and this is now affecting the image of all of them. Also some of the Thais who have suffered "subtle" discrimination during their travel to England are not too kindly disposed towards the English people who live? here (again many people will deny that there is any discrimination in England).

Why would English people with far less money affect the image of others? It doesn't take money to be polite and do the right thing. There are good and bad people all over the world both rich and poor!!

  9. Not to be a smartass either, but you mentioned the word "meany" several times, including the thread title. Is this how they spell "many" in Australia? "Meany" just sounds like a person who's not so nice.

But to your question, I've talked to many Englishmen in Thailand. In no particular order, they say their homeland is cold, bleak, over-regulated, expensive, and overrun by immigrants. I'm American, so I'm only speaking from comments that I've heard. And yes, I'm sure Thai women have something to do with this.

I think your comments from Englishmen sums it up Berkshire. The typical (not sure there is one now) Englishman has paid taxes at high rates only to be overrun with immigrants claiming benefits. Immigrants know if they can get into England they will be given housing and benefits paid for by the UK tax payers. The weather is crap and the stress level high. Many elder Englishmen come to live here and other countries so their hard earned pension monies can be put overseas and not left in the uk where the caring UK government will take 50% tax on drawdown!!. So if you can make a living or already have your pension then why not stay in the 'land of smile' and enjoy the weather and hospitality!

  10. Thank you to all that have added comments, even the slightly negative ones. Like I said, this happened about 3 weeks to a month ago. @stubuzz, What I did was question sometimes why the school kept using techniques of teaching that were dated/failures and also why some gifted students from non-bilingual classes could not get a scholarship into the MEP program. We all know an MEP program is just a money making machine and the school wants top dollar, regardless of the students abilities. To the guys who commented about the lesson plan, how can you write one when you are given no information about the class you would teach??? Sure, I had a lesson plan but it was in my head, like many others I could have done. I would like you to put into a room blind and pull a lesson off..........seriously! A written lesson plan is just a piece of paper, it's what you can do in the classroom that matters the most.

You talk about slander and sueing someone, but i think you ought to be careful what you write yourself! .... You state .. quote ' We all know an MEP Program is just a money making machine and the school wants top dollar regardless of the student's abilities' ..... Well no! we don't all know this. For example the MEP at my school has 'kicked out' in the region of 10 students during the last 2 semesters because their grades and performance does not meet the standards we require. We are not a large MEP and we need the money but standards and quality comes first. Maybe there is a simple answer to your situation. Maybe you were just not good enough!!!

  11. What a bunch of cry-baby biggoted baggers.

You uphold the virtues of uneducated farang teachers and defame the virtues of educated Filipino teachers. Certainly, anyone who can speak some English--even a bar-girl--can teach a few words of English to someone who speaks no English. Of course, there must be some uneducated NES teachers who do a good job, but to what depth can they teach the language and how many utter failures did the system go through to gain that few?

The Thais are trying to develop better educational systems for their children. Requiring educational standards for teachers is a step in the right direction.

Look at the written English displayed by TV posters--the vast majority of whom are NES and several even claim to be teachers. Far too many cannot put together a simple post without grammar or spelling errors. Is that the type of English competency you want for teachers of your child, or are you just trying to justify work in Thailand for an NES farang?

    grammar ???? try grammatical

So if you wanted your children to learn English and you had a choice between a Thai national who had a degree in English communication and a native speaker you would choose the Thai with the degree, right? Hmmmm i wonder ??

  12. Great ! My school sent my documents off today to renew my teaching permit! Hope it doesn't get rejected. I graduated 30 years ago, it is not going to be easy to get a letter from my university and then tell them what they have to write, make sure it is stamped with the seal and then put it in a sealed envelope and then what? Send to me to take the sealed envelope to Krusapa? Or do the university have to send it direct to Krusapa who will no doubt lose it ( that's if it arrives - with the great Thai postal system) or be unable to tie it up with the relevant paperwork, which by then will be massive with numerous pending teaching permit applications?? I think for those teaching Maths and Sciences a need to ensure they know and are qualified in their subject is important, but for a native speaker to go through these hoops to teach English is a bit excessive!!!!

  13. There is something 2 year for teachers, is it visa or extension, not sure, Barrow writes visa many times when he talks about extension.

    Richard Barrow @RichardBarrow

Work permit, visa proposals get positive response: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/business/Work-permit-visa-proposals-get-positive-response-30244996.html <= I recently got my first ever 2 year visa which I'm happy about

Thanks Hullupullo. This is what i read and what prompted me to post

  14. There is no 2 year extension possible at the moment. It is not something that is going to happen any time soon.

It would take a ministerial regulation at the least or possibly a change to the immigration act for them to be granted.

Hi Ubonjoe. Thanks for your reply you have helped me alot in the past and i appreciate it. It is the article in the nation which seems to indicate a 2 year visa is now available. The labour office have already confirmed to me they would be happy to give a a work permit for the duration a of a contract. Therefore i will probably get a 2 year contract end of the year and then go and see what immigration can do????? lol

  15. I read recently there may be a possibility of a 2 year extension of stay for teachers. Next month i will apply for my second 2 year teachers permit and as i have been at my school for a while i feel they will have no problem giving me a 2 year contract. Has anyone tried to get a 2 year extension yet or is this just an idea for immigration pending for the moment????!!!!

  16. Hi. I have a new teacher starting at my school on 27th Oct and he advises me that his wp and Visa expire on the 31st! My school closes today if i prepare all the necessary paperwork for him to go to labour office and immigration on the 27th or 28th is this enough time to get everything renewed. I have something in my mind that tells me you should have at least 10 days left on your visa when applying for a new wp but perhaps this has changed.

  17. His existing work permit would need to be canceled before a new one can be issued.

A recent change to the rules allow for immigration to do an extension of stay with a work permit application approval letter. If you could get that before his current extension expires he should be able to apply for a new extension then as soon as the existing work permit has been canceled the work permit could be issued.

Ok thankyou for your advice Ubonjoe, can i just go over some points again for your advice. So 1. He would cancel his existing work permit at the labour office? Does this involve any letters from the school to cancel? 2. Would he then apply for a new work permit at the same time with appropriate letters from the school? or does he have to wait? 3. What is the work permit approval letter? Is this something from labour office.

Advice please thankyou for your time.

  18. I am employing a new teacher as from 27th Oct. He has a work permit from another school and his work permit and visa expire on the 31st Oct. He is a Fillipino. I think he may need at least 10 days on his documents to renew, but otherwise if my school does all the paperwork can he just go and get a extension to his work permit and an extension of stay on his existing non b visa. The reason i ask is that some people are telling me he needs to go out of the country to get a new Non b visa as he is changing schools. Thoughts and advice please.

  19. "...they still required me to pay one months tax for this year but didn't want any forms from my school!"

How did you pay that? Did you have to go to the tax office?

you need to get a form no 1 from your local tax office, fill it in and the school needs to sign it. You will probably need the school to help you as you need the school tax number as well as your own and the forms are in Thai. At least this is what is done in this area ( samutprakan).

Sorry i should also have added, once you have the forms completed take a copy for immigration and then go to your tax office and pay one months tax, they will probably charge you 200 baht for the privilage! They will keep these forms hence the need to take a copy as the receipts given by the tax office are not enough for immigration they need copy paperwork as well !! (t.i.t)

  21. Interesting to read your post. I have been obtaining a marriage extension of stay for 10 years now. Intially i used the 400k method but the last two times i have used the 40kpm. This week i went to renew with my wife and had nothing but hassle. I am a teacher and the first 'extra' thing they asked for was photographs of myself at school! I had all the usual house and family photos but now they wanted photo's of me at work!!. Next they had a problem with my tax paperwork, i had paid last years tax and had the 91 form and receipts, however i still needed some paperwork from the school which i didn't understand. Anyhow, to cut a long story short i ended up renewing my extension of stay just in my own name with my work permit they still required me to pay one months tax for this year but didn't want any forms from my school! Totalling confusing. I will probably continue with my extension of stay via a Non b visa in future as it requires less paperwork.

  22. We have a new teacher who would like to get his non b visa in singapore. Looking at the Singapore Thai embassy details, they are asking for a teachers licence as well as police criminal check record? This is confusing me as i was under the impression you need a non b before you apply for the teachers license? Has anyone done their non b in singapore? I'm thinking it may be easier for him to go to Laos as we have sent two teachers there recently with school paperwork and they have had no problems and have not been asked for a criminal record check or teachers licence. Singapore or Laos ideas and advice please!  Our teacher holds a spanish passport.

  23. Maximum he can get is an extra 7 days to leave the country. (Sometimes proof of onward travel is required, but haven't seen reports in a long time they asked for that).

A tourist vis would be available in a neighbouring country. No special docments required, besides passport and pass photo. But a ticket out of Thailand after 60 or 90 days might help.

Yes i thought so. Thanks for the confirmation
