  1. Hi guys, been trying to scroll the websites finding updated information regarding the visa situation. Maybe someone can advise me of the following. I have an Italian friend here in Thailand with a 30 day tourist visa exemption stamp. Can he extend this in Thailand? Reading some information i think he may be able to increase by 7 or 10 days at any immigration but i'm not sure if this is still the case. Alternatively is he still able to leave the country and get a tourist visa in a neighbouring country? What documents are needed? Advice would be appreciated.

  2. My school is at present having a problem with a cameroon teacher trying to obtain a Non B visa in order to secure a work permit. Usually our new teachers are sent to Laos or Cambodia with the relevant paperwork to get their Non B. However we have just been informed that Cameroon has now been issued to the list of countries where these countrymen have to return to their home country (or nearest with a Thai embassy) to obtain their Non B! Does anyone know where i can obtain a list of these 'flagged' countries, as this will have a bearing on recruitment in the future.

  3. Our new Cameroon teacher recently went to Singapore to obtain his Non B armed with the relevent school paperwork. He chose Singapore as he has been there before without problems. This time he was informed there is a new rule and people from his country have to obtain their Non B in their own country or nearest country with a Thai Embassy ( Nigeria). Is anybody aware of this 'new rule'. He is going to try Malaysia but if this rule is correct i feel this would be a wasted journey! He is now stuck in Singapore awaiting a visa for Malaysia!

  4. I assist my school in interviewing and recruting new teachers. I was always under the impression that you needed to leave the country if you needed to convert your tourist visa to a non-B in order to then get your work permit etc and this system has worked fine for us so far. However, I have recently been advised that you don't need to leave the country to do this! Is this correct? Can you convert a tourist visa with the necessary school paperwork to a non- B at Changwattana?

  5. I, like Scott in an earlier post, also deal with the hiring of teachers in a government school. This year there is far fewer 'quality' applicants than recent years. I started advertising for a positions in my school last Feb for a May start - i don't call that last minute - and i have still to fill all the positions. Yes, schools can improve with regard to salaries and conditions especially government schools who are extremely reluctant to pay 12m contracts. Most schools are also under pressure from parents to hire 'white' native speakers or else they will take their students away from the school! In addition it is not only the fault of schools as i have frequently sent emails to teachers offering jobs who do not respond in any way, despite chasers. T.I.T (This is Thailand) if you don't like it, then nobody is forcing you to stay in the country. I think many teachers who are flexible are now experiencing other countries and often better working conditions hence the reason for many schools still without the right teachers. I love Thailand, I love living here so i put up with the issues and problems i face as a teacher. No country is perfect

  6. Hi. I teach English at a government school in Samutprakan and i also assist the school in teacher recruitment. Having a problem finding native speakers to teach in our Mini English program this semester. So if there are any of you in Thailand still looking for teaching work please email me with resume and photo and i'll sent you further details. I'm looking for an English conversation / computer teacher and a Maths teacher. Maths teacher doesn't have to be a native speaker just have qualifications in this field. Thanks.

    PM for further details

  7. Let's face it, it's you! Anyway, if "your friend" has been working and getting 30K a month then why hasn't he renewed his visa? At the end of the day it is up to the individual to ensure he / she has a visa. If the school does supply it then all well and good. As I said, it's up to you "your friend" at the end of the day. Also did your friend have the correct documents? in many cases these people cannot provide a degree or transcripts making it more difficult for the school. Leave it alone, pay the fine and move on.

Yes, agreed. I think you need to be sure your friend has the correct documents? This is Thailand! Documents needed vary from one labour office to the next. Does he have a teachers licence? Degree, transcript, thai culture etc etc. If 'your friend' has overstayed it is his/her fault not the school.

  8. Terrible story, the poor little boy. I guess he and his father lived a quite life and pretty much kept to themselves. I hope English relatives come forward and offer the little guy a real chance in life.

Must have missed it somewhere! Where did it say the father was English? Racism is a funny thing: it's much closer to home than you think!

The original article does describe him as "British". That's close enough, isn't it?

If one is too lazy to read the 3 paragraphs...

They also have a pic of the guy... He looks Caucasian.

I actually don't think this guy is British a name like Sorenson is usually scandanavian - i think he is probably Danish!! Anyhow still a terrible thibg to happen to a young man with a small child hope everything works out OK for the kid

  9. Just like other countries you leave your home country for more than 6 months you get nothing England is just moving with the times at last.

Time for you all here to get your heath Insurance before you fall though the cracks

I paid into mine for almost 40 years - it was called the NHS.

Nobody told me as I made each of those 475 payments that I would ineligible for treatment if I chose to live in Thailand.

Typical UK! If you live in the UK but haven't worked or paid any taxes that's ok you can get free treatment, but if your British, have worked all your life, paid your taxes but choose to spend your pension in a warmer climate you can not get any free NHS treatment!!!

  10. There is no proof of tax payments listed for getting an extension of stay (it is not a visa) in police order 305/2551 for teaching (2.6 & 2.7).

But it is possible immigration office could ask for it

This is for a teacher. Recently one of our teachers renewed his workpermit and when he went to samutprakan immigration for his extension of stay, they do required tax forms etc. i am a teacher but i have a non o spouse visa supported by income, again i need to supply evidence i pay tax. My colleagues situation is that her salary is such that after deductions she doesn't have to pay tax so i was wondering if she needed a nil return document from the tax office to confirm this which i think she probably does.

My experience is that everybody who works MUST file Personal Income Tax. Depending on the income, allowances and withheld tax by the employer, you have to pay, don't have to pay or get withheld tax back. In our province both Immigration and Labour want to have a copy of the PND91 form and the tax clearance receipt or refund cheque.

Yes it seems to vary from province to province! (thailand!! lol) Here you don't need to show any tax paperwork to the labour office but you do for immigration.

  12. A Phillipine colleague of mine will soon be looking to renew their visa, work permit already renewed. She doesn't earn enough to pay tax but i am assuming she will still need to go to the tax office and get a tax number and confirmation paperwork that she doesn't have to pay tax. Is this correct? Or will immigration be aware she doesn't need to pay tax when they see her school contract and salary details and therefore she doesn't need to go to the tax office prior to visa renewal?

  13. Advice please! A teacher colleague of mine went to get her first wp today but due to delays in receiving teaching licence etc she only had two days left on her non o visa. She was told by the labour office she needed 10 days minimum left on her visa to apply. I was of the impression if they agree to the paperwork , you then pay for the wp and get a receipt and with this receipt you can then apply for your wp visa, you don't need to wait for the book. Has something changed or have i misunderstood something ? She did go and get a 7 day extension but there still seems to be a problem at the labour office with regard to the expiry? Ideas please.

  14. I taught in a Gov't school in Isaan for 1 year and my son was allowed free tuition.

He did MEP and loved it smile.png

pm me for more info wink.png

Thanks for this info Chonabot, this is the same scenario as i have now, except i have been at this school for nine years! Yes, if i need some more info i will pm you thanks for that. I'm still awaiting an answer from my school director at the moment so will wait and see for now.

  15. I wonder if anybody could give me some feedback on this matter. I am a foreign teacher teaching in a Mini English program of a Thai government school. My daughter now also attends this same school studying in M1 of the MEP. I recently approached my school to ask for a reduction in the school fees for my daughter, as i was a teacher at the school. I requested this as i had heard Thai schools often give discounts of 50% or sometimes waive fees for the children of teachers at the same school. Although this is still being discussed by my school i am of the impression that my school will not give any discounts. Therefore i was wondering if anybody knows of the policy ( if there is one) of discounted fees for teachers children. i think this is probably a practice by private schools but if anybody has feedback that it happens in government schools also i would be interested to hear your views

  16. Can someone answer this question please. I'm helping a colleague get her first work permit, we are just waiting for her teachers licence from the MOE which hioefully will be here any day now?. She tells me she only has 30 days left on her non b visa, is this ok when applying for a work permit? Is there a set amount of time needed left on your visa to apply ? or is it ok as long as your visa is still valid? I know you need to apply i month in advance of expiry to renew your work permit and I know you can apply for a visa at immigratiion on production of the receipt from the labour office but not sure of the labour office rules with regard to the expiry date of the Visa on first application for a work permit. Look forward to some replies

  17. I have a new teacher to be starting soon at my school, this is their first time in Thailand and she is here on a tourist visa, the school is looking to go through the motions of obtaining a teachers licence and work permit. My question is can the tourist visa be converted to a Non B in Changwattana in order to apply for the teachers licence, or does she have to go to Laos and obtain the non B. I think the latter is probably the case but if anyone knows differently please let me know.

  18. Have fished there four times now and have always had a great day fishing apart from one time and that was due heavy rain the day before.

Always fished from the 800 baht bungalows,if there are four of you going then I would suggest taking two of the bungalows instead of one because it when someone gets a run then it usually means the other/others need to reel in and that can be a pain in the wotsit !!!

Prices if I remember right are...

Bungalow .....800 - 2000 Baht (up to you how many fishing)

Days fishing license ....400 Baht Thai and 1000 Baht foreigner

Guide ....1000 (tip optional, but they deserve one)

    Rod rental ....500 Baht

    Bait/Lum.... 200 Baht a sack

    Fishing times.....9am-9pm and 9pm-9am

If you are after a big catfish then try bungalows #3 or #4 ,if only after the little ones (15kg-30 kg) then I would recommend around #'s 24,25,26.

    My biggest fish so far

    Hope this helps.

    Happy hooking !!!

Thanks for the info Shaggy much appreciated.

  19. All you need to show is 3 months of tax payments and work permit to verify you are working legally.

I have just started working for a school so do you know who and how the tax is paid. Only just got my first work permit so a bit naive. I've read a bit about schools 'negotiating' tax payments etc. So how do i get 3 months confirmation of tax paid? Do i do it somehow or the school? Sorry if i sound dumb but have not gone through this process before. Marriage visa expires end of june so if get these proof of payments it would seem the way forward....... any ideas?

  20. Thanks for info. Yes i do understand i can renew marriage visa on income, but do they need to see a work permit/contract valid for 12 months to renew my 12 month marriage visa because when my marriage visa expires, the work permit will be 3 months old and i will be 3 months into my contract. I understand the options available to me i'm just trying to get the timing right if possible!
