The incident occurred around 12:30 on 7 May, in Ban Nadi, Na Hua Bo Subdistrict, Phanna Nikhom District. Emergency services from Na Hua Bo Subdistrict Municipality and Phanna rescue teams, along with officers from Phanna Nikhom Police Station, rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a fatal lightning strike. The deceased, identified by relatives as Mr Paek 54, was found already moved to a safe location by family members before authorities arrived. He was the owner of the property where the incident occurred. According to reports, the weather at the time was hot and humid, with heavy cloud cover and continuous thunder. Mr Paek had gone out to herd his cattle into the pen from an open field. As he passed by a tall coconut tree in his garden, lightning struck the top of the tree. Mr Paek was in close proximity and was hit by the electrical surge from the strike, resulting in his immediate death. Authorities have transported the body to Phanna Nikhom Hospital for a formal autopsy. Officials have issued a renewed warning to the public in light of this tragic event. The Meteorological Department of Thailand has forecast thunderstorms and strong winds throughout May and advises citizens to avoid standing under large trees, near unstable structures or in open fields during storms, to ensure personal safety and protect property. 4. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A man has miraculously survived a harrowing fall down a 100-metre cliff at a scenic mountain viewpoint in southern Thailand, as his girlfriend looked on helplessly in terror. The incident occurred at approximately 07:55 on 7 May, at Khao Lae Viewpoint in Sadao District, Songkhla Province, a popular location known for its panoramic views of sunrise and sea mist. The victim, identified as Mr Nabi, 20, from Pattani Province, was visiting the viewpoint early in the morning with his girlfriend to watch the sunrise. According to reports, he slipped near the edge of the Heo Lan cliff, tumbling down the steep slope before becoming lodged in a tree roughly 100 metres below. Emergency services, including teams from the Maikhom, Sanakham, and Phatong Theottham rescue units, were alerted by horrified onlookers after the man’s girlfriend screamed for help. Due to the rugged terrain, rescuers had to hike nearly 800 metres up the mountain before descending carefully to retrieve the injured man. He was found unconscious but breathing, with visible injuries including a fractured arm and facial wounds. Rescue workers secured him in a stretcher and painstakingly carried him back up the mountainside in a delicate operation lasting nearly an hour. He was later transported to Sadao Hospital for emergency treatment. Witnesses said the area was slippery due to recent rainfall, and the cliffside was covered in wet grass and loose soil. One tourist, known only as Benz, told local reporters: “I heard a woman scream, then a thud. When we went to look, we saw him lying far below and having a seizure. We called for help immediately.” Local officials have urged visitors to exercise extreme caution while exploring high-risk viewpoints, particularly during the rainy season when footing can be treacherous. 6. UPDATE Black Box & Wreckage of Police Plane Sent to Canada for Crash Investigation Picture courtesy of Daily News. Authorities have begun the process of shipping the black box and key components of the wreckage from a police aircraft to Canada, where international aviation experts will assist in determining the cause of the tragic crash that claimed six lives. The aircraft, operated by the Royal Thai Police’s airborne unit, crashed into the sea off Hua Hin beach on the morning of 25 April. All six aboard the flight were killed. In the aftermath, recovery teams successfully retrieved the wreckage from the seabed and cordoned off the crash site to preserve evidence and ensure a secure investigation. On 7 May, Group Captain Pakin Phetcharat, commander of Special Operations Squadron 509, along with officials from the Police Aviation Division and Canadian specialists, supervised the dismantling of the aircraft to transport to a secured site. The wreckage was separated into components: the fuselage, the left and right wings and the tail section. A crane truck, was used to carefully lift and load each section onto a transport vehicle for relocation to the Police Aviation Division in Bang Khen, Bangkok. Authorities confirmed that the aircraft’s black box, along with both engines still attached to the wings, will be shipped to Canada for advanced forensic analysis by the manufacturer’s experts. This international collaboration aims to uncover technical faults or external factors that may have contributed to the fatal crash. The Royal Thai Police and aviation authorities have vowed full transparency in the investigation and are working closely with international partners to ensure a thorough and credible examination of the crash. The findings will play a vital role in enhancing aviation safety protocols and preventing future tragedies. Adapted by Asean Now from Daily News 2025-05-08.

  8. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Six people, including a heavily pregnant woman and a seven-year-old girl, endured a terrifying ordeal after becoming trapped inside a hospital lift at Pathum Thani Hospital for over an hour. At approximately 08:20 on 7 May, Pathum Thani City Police received an emergency call from the hospital reporting that multiple patients and visitors were stuck inside a malfunctioning lift. Officers from the local police station and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were immediately dispatched to the scene. The incident occurred in the Chalerm Phrakiat 80th Birthday Anniversary Building, a nine-storey facility used for general patient care. According to hospital staff, six people were inside Lift No. 3 at the time it broke down. One of the trapped individuals managed to call a relative, who alerted hospital authorities , but the group was unable to identify which floor they were stuck on. Rescue workers began knocking on the lift doors from floors 1 through 9 before finally hearing a response from those trapped on the 9th floor. However, initial attempts to open the lift failed. A person inside the lift called out to report that the group was struggling to breathe due to the lack of ventilation and heat. This prompted responders to urgently pry open the lift doors using crowbars. All six individuals were successfully rescued and brought to safety, although visibly shaken. The seven-year-old girl reportedly burst into tears upon exiting the lift, while others had sustained minor bruising. All victims were immediately taken to the hospital’s medical unit for examination. Once cleared by doctors, they were discharged and allowed to return home. One of the victims, a pregnant woman nearing her due date, described the moment the lift malfunctioned. She had entered the lift on the first floor with her husband and four others, an elderly couple, a young girl, and the girl’s mother, intending to go to the fourth floor for a prenatal check-up. After pressing the button, the lift appeared to rise normally, with floor indicators lighting up for levels 1 through 4. However, she described a sudden and violent acceleration upwards, followed by a loud crash and a complete loss of power inside the lift. The force of the impact caused everyone to fall to the floor. Panic quickly set in. The emergency call button inside the lift was unresponsive, and a call to the emergency services number, 191, went unanswered. It was only after the relative contacted the hospital directly that rescue efforts began in earnest. “There was a moment where we really thought we wouldn’t get out,” she said. “The air was getting thin, and it was hard to breathe. Thankfully, help arrived just in time.” She reported suffering minor injuries to her arms and legs and said she would undergo a full check-up to assess any impact on her pregnancy. The hospital has not yet issued an official statement regarding the cause of the lift failure, though concerns are expected to be raised about maintenance and emergency response procedures following the incident. 10. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Authorities in Nong Khai have destroyed over 260 kilograms of animal carcasses and meat deemed high-risk for spreading infectious diseases, amid growing concerns about African Swine Fever (ASF) in the region. At 14:00, on 6 May, officers from the Nong Khai Animal Quarantine Station, in coordination with local customs officials and provincial livestock authorities, carried out the destruction of the confiscated materials. The items included: • 180 kg of bovine offal • 42 kg of bovine meat • 40 kg of pork The origin of the animal products could not be verified, raising suspicions that they may have come from animals infected with or carrying infectious diseases. In light of this, and the recent designation of Nong Khai as a disease surveillance zone for African Swine Fever, authorities acted swiftly to prevent potential spread. The destruction was conducted through burial, in accordance with sections 13 and 40 of Thailand’s Animal Epidemics Act (B.E. 2558 / 2015), which permits authorities to destroy animal products suspected of being a disease risk. ASF is a highly contagious viral disease affecting pigs, with no known cure or vaccine. While it poses no threat to humans, its rapid transmission can devastate pig populations and have significant economic repercussions for the pork industry. Officials have reiterated the importance of strict biosecurity measures and called on the public to avoid transporting or consuming meat of unclear origin. Surveillance and enforcement efforts in the province are expected to intensify in the coming weeks. Adapted by Asean Now from Matichon 2025-05-08.

The crash, which occurred at the Doi Ti intersection on the Lampang–Chiang Mai road late on 6 May, resulted in the deaths of two people and left a young girl motherless. Police from the Muang Ji station received reports of a multi-vehicle collision involving a rescue vehicle and several motorcycles. Emergency responders from the Sawang Nakhon Lamphun Rescue Association, along with partner rescue networks and paramedics from Prince Lamphun Hospital, rushed to the scene. Initial investigations revealed that motorcycles had been moving through the intersection under a green light when the rescue vehicle allegedly ran the red light with its siren blaring, despite not transporting any patient. Four people were injured at the scene, and CPR was performed on a woman at the site before all casualties were transported to nearby hospitals. Sadly, 45-year-old Kamonrat, a local office worker in an industrial estate, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. She had just finished work and was on her way home to Nam Phu village in Pa Sak subdistrict when the crash occurred. Kanyapak, the victim’s sister from Chiang Rai, stated that Kamonrat had been riding home at around 20:30 when the rescue vehicle collided with her at high speed. Witnesses confirm the vehicle ran the red light with its siren active. Several others were injured in the incident and an unidentified man also later died at hospital from his injuries. Kamon, Kamonrat’s husband, spoke tearfully about his routine of waiting on his motorbike each night to escort his wife down the dimly lit road to their home. After waiting in vain and repeatedly calling her phone with no answer, he received the devastating news. The couple’s seven-year-old daughter is now left without her mother. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, with public criticism mounting over the misuse of rescue sirens and the apparent negligence leading to loss of innocent lives. 18. UPDATE Former Village Headman Confesses to Shooting Nephew-in-Law Dead in Durian Orchard Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A former village headman has confessed to the fatal shooting of his nephew-in-law in a durian plantation, claiming he acted out of sympathy for his niece who had allegedly endured repeated abuse by the victim. The incident occurred in the district of Tha Sala, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, where Mr Somchai 47, was found shot dead on 6 May in the family’s durian orchard. Police say the land had been jointly cultivated by the victim and his wife over the past four to five years, though recent domestic disputes had strained the relationship. Mr Somchai reportedly entered the orchard late at night and began cutting down trees he had planted, prompting the deadly confrontation. Surveillance footage showed a man, later identified as Mr Jaroon 59, a former village headman and close relative of the victim’s wife, leaving his home earlier that evening carrying a shotgun and dressed in dark clothing. Initially denying involvement, Mr Jaroon was arrested following the issuance of a warrant and later confessed during police interrogation. He told officers that his niece, Mr Somchai’s wife, had suffered long-term physical abuse and had contacted him the night before the killing to say she had once again been assaulted. According to police, Mr Jaroon advised his niece to leave the house and stay with her father. He then armed himself with a shotgun and confronted Mr Somchai at the orchard, shooting him dead before hiding the weapon and returning home. Mr Jaroon now faces multiple charges, including murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, and carrying a weapon in public without a permit. Authorities noted that Mr Somchai was known to have struggled with substance abuse and had displayed violent behaviour on numerous occasions, allegedly attacking both his wife and property. Police have taken Mr Jaroon into custody and are continuing their investigation. He is expected to be charged formally and brought before the court following a crime scene re-enactment and the recovery of the firearm used in the killing. The incident occurred at approximately 11:50 within the grounds of a golf course in the Plutaluang subdistrict, according to Police Lieutenant Ratchawut Sapsiri, an investigating officer from Plutaluang Police Station. Emergency responders, including medical personnel from Sattahip Km.10 Hospital and the Sawang Rojanathammasathan Rescue Foundation, rushed to the scene following the emergency call. The crash site was a steep, concrete-paved incline. There, responders found the dump truck flipped over, having landed directly on top of the driver, Mr. Samphan. Staff at the golf course quickly brought in a JCB backhoe to lift the vehicle and free the victim, who was immediately given CPR. Despite efforts lasting more than 20 minutes, medical personnel pronounced Mr. Samphan dead at the scene. He had suffered a severe, fatal head injury, with a large wound on the left temple from the heavy impact and being crushed. Initial reports indicate that the victim had been transporting sand in the dump truck for golf course maintenance when the vehicle lost balance on the downhill slope. The heavy front load caused it to overturn forward, resulting in the fatal accident. Police have documented the scene and are currently interviewing witnesses to ascertain the full circumstances of the incident. Mr. Samphan’s body has been sent to Sattahip Km.10 Hospital for autopsy. 22. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A serious road crash in the early hours of the morning of 7 May, has left more than a dozen people injured after a pickup truck slammed into a concrete barrier and collided head-on with a passenger van on Asia Highway 41 in Chumphon province. According to police reports from Pol Sub-Lt. Wimon Kaewchu of the Chumphon Highway Police, the incident occurred in Moo 1, Khun Krathing subdistrict, Mueang District, at a location where ongoing roadworks had forced vehicles travelling southbound to use a special contraflow lane on the northbound carriageway. Concrete barriers had been placed to divide the temporary lanes, but crucially, there were no warning lights installed along the work zone. Eyewitnesses and rescue workers at the scene reported that a Toyota pickup truck, registered in Bangkok, appeared to be unaware of the barrier in the darkened area and ploughed directly into it. The impact sent the barrier flying before the vehicle veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a Toyota passenger van operating as a non-scheduled hire vehicle registered in Pattani. The pickup truck, carrying three people, sustained frontal damage. The driver, identified as Mr Montree and two passengers, Ms Phana and Mr Chanchai, were all injured and transported to Chumphon Hospital. The van, carrying 12 Cambodian nationals, was en route from Sa Kaeo province to Songkhla. The driver, Mr Hibraoheng 49, became trapped behind the wheel following the collision. Rescue personnel used hydraulic cutting tools to extract him, and he was rushed to hospital with a severely injured right leg. The passengers also sustained varying degrees of injury. Mr Suriya, 44, a local rescue volunteer who lives nearby, was among the first on the scene. He confirmed that the location had seen more than 10 similar incidents since repairs began. He criticised the lack of adequate lighting and warning signals along the makeshift contraflow route, stating that only minimal lighting had been placed at the start and end of the section. One eyewitness riding a motorcycle behind the van reported seeing the pickup truck coming from the opposite direction and failing to notice the barrier before the collision occurred. The witness added that road set up and lack of visibility likely contributed to the crash. Authorities from the Chumphon Highway Police said they would file a report with the local Department of Highways office, urging immediate action to install adequate warning lights and signage in the construction zone to prevent further accidents. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported in this latest incident. A full investigation into the precise cause of the crash is now underway. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-08.

  24. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A long-standing family dispute ended with a 65-year-old man fatally shooting his nephew following a heated argument in the Na Mueang Phet subdistrict of Sikao District, Trang Province. Police were alerted to the incident in Village 6, Ban Thap Makham. The victim, Mr Saksri Phengsuksri, aged 51, was rushed to Trang Hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest. Despite emergency medical attention, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Colonel Theerapat Piyathaworn, superintendent of Sikao Police Station, ordered an immediate investigation, with forensics and rescue teams dispatched to the scene. Evidence of the shooting, including three pools of diluted blood, was found on the road outside the victim’s residence. The suspected shooter, Mr Sengiam, a close relative and the uncle of the deceased, had already fled. A post-mortem revealed the victim had been shot with a .38 calibre revolver. The bullet entered the left side of his chest and became lodged inside his body. The body has been sent for further examination at Songklanagarind Hospital in Hat Yai, Songkhla. Investigations revealed that the suspect and victim had been at odds for years over various disputes, notably a six-figure debt which the victim had failed to repay. The situation escalated when the victim allegedly rebuked a younger relative for revving a loud motorcycle near his house. The teenager reported the incident to his grandfather, who is also the uncle of the victim. Later that day, the victim reportedly followed the teenager to his grandfather’s home to continue the argument. The uncle, incensed by the confrontation and long-standing resentment, retrieved a revolver and shot Mr Saksri at close range. In the aftermath, the suspect, accompanied by his son and grandson, transported the wounded victim in a pickup truck towards the hospital. During the journey, they allowed the shooter to escape by dropping him off near a resort, where he attempted to hide. Police traced the victim’s relatives to Trang Hospital, where the grandson was found in tears. Upon questioning, he revealed the full details of the incident, which led officers to the suspect’s hideout at a resort in Na Mueang Phet. Initially evasive, the suspect eventually confessed to the killing. He later surrendered the murder weapon, a .38 revolver which he had given to his daughter to hide in a rubber plantation hut behind the family home. Mr Sengiam now faces multiple charges, including murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a firearm in public without a licence, and discharging a firearm in a residential area without cause. He has been remanded into custody at Sikao Police Station for further legal proceedings. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-08.
