Picture from responders. Police from Sattahip Police Station in Chonburi province responded to a collision on the morning of 24 April, after a pickup truck attempted to drive around a railway crossing barrier, only to be hit by an oncoming freight train. The incident occurred at the railway crossing on Ban Noen Samakkhi Road, Moo 3, Bang Saray Subdistrict, Sattahip District. Emergency responders from the Kled Kaew Subdistrict Municipality Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Unit, along with rescue personnel from the Sawang Rojanathammasathan Foundation, rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities discovered freight train No. 4524, en route from Map Ta Phut Station in Rayong to Laem Chabang Port in Si Racha, stopped near the crash site. Approximately 50 metres from the point of impact, an Isuzu D-Max pickup truck with Rayong registration plate was found damaged in nearby undergrowth. Preliminary investigations, including footage retrieved from municipal CCTV cameras, revealed that the pickup truck had attempted to cross the railway line despite the barrier being down. The truck was struck by the train, causing damage and leaving the driver, 69-year-old Mr. Prasert Sanguanchom, seriously injured inside the vehicle. Rescue teams extricated him and he was urgently transported to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital. Police continue to investigate the incident. Mr. Prasert will be questioned once he recovers from his injuries, and the train driver will also be interviewed as part of standard legal proceedings. Picture from responders. A road crash claimed the life of a 38-year-old factory worker in the early hours the morning of 24 April, when his motorcycle collided with the rear of a stationary 18-wheeler lorry on Highway 331 in the Khao Mai Kaew area of Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province. The incident occurred as he was returning from a barbecue dinner dare with his girlfriend, who was also injured in the crash. Rescue volunteers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation in Pattaya were alerted to the collision and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they found a damaged Honda Wave 110i motorcycle, white and blue in colour, registration from Rayong, which had struck the rear of a white Hino S700 lorry, which had been parked at the roadside. The lorry, loaded with concrete blocks, had broken down and was stationary at the time of the incident. Its driver, Mr Phisit Sotakhamsaen, 45, told police he had been attempting repairs and had removed the vehicle’s battery, resulting in the emergency lights being disabled. He noted the location was poorly lit and that he heard a loud crash before discovering the motorcycle and its riders thrown across the road. Mr Chatchasak Saweko, 38, the motorcycle rider, was pronounced dead at the scene, having fatal head trauma. His passenger, Ms Yuwalee Hommak, 24, sustained abrasions and complained of pain in her left shoulder. Rescue personnel administered first aid before transferring her to hospital for further treatment. Police Lieutenant Polsan Khanchalee, Deputy Inspector of Investigation at Huai Yai Police Station, conducted an initial on-site investigation and documented the scene. The deceased was later transported to Bang Lamung Hospital, where authorities await contact from his family to claim the body for religious funeral rites. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, including the positioning of the lorry and the lack of emergency warning signals and will take legal proceedings on the outcome. Doctor Raises Alarming Questions After Train Attendant Dies Onboard Overnight Service Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A doctor has spoken out following the death of a sleeping car attendant onboard an overnight train, questioning the absence of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and the lack of CPR training for railway staff. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A doctor has spoken out following the death of a sleeping car attendant onboard an overnight train, questioning the absence of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and the lack of CPR training for railway staff. The incident occurred on express train No. 86, running from Nakhon Si Thammarat to Bangkok. The male attendant, reportedly suffering from chest tightness and breathing difficulties, collapsed and died while on duty. The incident was brought to public attention by the Facebook page of “Dr. Paiphan’s Obstetrics & Gynaecology Clinic,” which shared the firsthand account of a physician who was travelling on the train and tried desperately to save the man’s life. “Because death never warns in advance,” the post begins. The doctor, who had boarded the train at Chumphon around 22:00 en route to a meeting in Bangkok, was awakened just after 03:00, by a commotion among passengers. “An officer has collapsed!” someone cried. She rushed to the scene and found the man unresponsive, with no pulse and no signs of breathing. She immediately began CPR. Only two other passengers stepped in to help, one to help time the compressions, the other to assist with chest compressions. Railway staff, had no training in emergency aid, did what they could, calling the emergency number 1669 and halting the train to allow rescue workers in Ratchaburi to board. Despite continuous CPR for 30 minutes, the man showed no signs of recovery by the time medics arrived. He was pronounced dead on site. In the aftermath, the doctor expressed her deepest condolences to the victim’s family, but also raised serious concerns as a medical professional: Why is there no AED onboard trains? Why are railway staff not trained in basic CPR? And in that critical moment, why were only two fellow passengers prepared to step forward and help? “CPR isn’t just a doctor’s job,” she wrote. “It’s a human responsibility, to not just stand by while someone dies in front of you.” She concluded with a reminder that could save lives: Perform chest compressions at 100–120 times per minute, about 5–6 cm deep. Call 1669 immediately. Use an AED if one is available. The post has sparked widespread discussion online about emergency preparedness on public transport and the need for broader CPR training and equipment across the railway system. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Police in Patong have launched an investigation following the discovery of a deceased Swedish national in his hotel room in the Kathu District of Phuket Province on 23 April. The man, identified as Mr Pierre, aged 52, had reportedly been staying alone at the hotel since 10 April. Authorities have confirmed that there were no visible signs of struggle, forced entry, or foul play at the scene. Personal belongings, including medication, were found intact, and nothing in the room appeared to have been disturbed. Emergency services were called to the scene and later transported the body to Vachira Phuket Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. According to a hotel maid who discovered the body, Mr Pierre had been seen drinking alcohol in his room on a daily basis. She explained to police that she attempted to clean the room that morning, but received no response when she knocked. After trying again around midday and still getting no answer, she looked through the window and saw Mr Pierre lying motionless. Concerned, she entered the room and discovered him unresponsive, at which point she immediately notified the authorities. The Swedish Embassy has been informed of the incident and is working to contact Mr Pierre’s next of kin. A spokesperson for the Patong Police stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released once the results of the post-mortem are available. Impatient Motorcyclist Rides Through Railway Barrier, Wife Falls Off & Injured Picture courtesy of Amarin A woman, riding pillion on a motorcycle, was injured after she collided with a lowering railway barrier in Bangkok, in an incident that serves as a stark warning to road users about the dangers of ignoring safety signals. Picture courtesy of Amarin A woman, riding pillion on a motorcycle, was injured after she collided with a lowering railway barrier in Bangkok, in an incident that serves as a stark warning to road users about the dangers of ignoring safety signals. A video clip, widely shared on Thai social media via the page “อยากดังเดี๋ยวจัดให้ รีเทิร์น part 6” (translated: “If You Want to Be Famous, I’ll Make You Famous – Return Part 6”), shows a man and woman attempting to cross a railway track on a motorcycle as the barrier was coming down to stop traffic for an approaching train. While the man managed to duck under, the barrier struck the woman riding behind him, knocking her off the vehicle. She sustained facial injuries and was seen staggering away from the railway line. The man stopped and ran back to assist her. The clip was captioned sarcastically: “If you’re in such a hurry, why didn’t you leave yesterday? Was it worth it?” The incident occurred near the level crossing adjacent to Wat Nang Nong on Wutthakat Road in Bang Kho district, Bangkok. The crossing, located on a bend, is controlled by railway staff and fitted with dual boom barriers. Locals report the barriers were only recently installed, replacing a previous wire-rope system. Reporters visited the scene and spoke with “Pa Kai”, a 72-year-old curry vendor whose stall is located near the crossing. Although she did not witness the actual moment of impact, she saw the aftermath as the injured woman tried to stand up before being helped to the roadside by her presumed partner. Emergency services later transported the victim to hospital. Pa Kai said this was not the first such incident. She admitted that many motorcyclists frequently ignore the barriers to avoid waiting for trains to pass, even though the wait time is usually only a few minutes. She recalled previous incidents where riders were injured after being struck by the barrier. “As a member of the community, I just want to urge people to stay calm and wait. It’s not worth risking your life or damaging property,” she said. Officials from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) have confirmed that crossing the barriers while they are in operation is a criminal offence. If a vehicle damages the railway’s property, such as hitting the barrier, the offender may face legal action. SRT officials are required to report such incidents to the police, and the Department of Land Transport may record the offence, potentially preventing the driver from renewing their licence. The incident has sparked renewed calls for stricter enforcement and greater public awareness to prevent further injuries, or worse, at railway crossings across the country. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A family altercation turned deadly on the morning of 23 April, when a man fatally shot his younger brother in apparent self-defence after being attacked with a knife. Police were alerted to the incident at around 10:30 at a residence in Moo 7, Huai Yang Kham sub-district, Chun District, Phayao Province. Upon arrival at the scene, officers from Chun Police Station, led by Pol. Sub-Lt. Wirot Khrongkaphai, found a man lying seriously injured in front of the family home. The victim, later identified as Mr. Pattharasorn, had sustained a gunshot wound to the head. Standing nearby was his elder brother, Mr. Wuttichai, who calmly surrendered himself to police. He admitted to shooting his brother and led officers to the firearm, which was recovered from a storage room at the back of the house. Rescue workers from the Norasingh Chun emergency unit rushed the injured man to Chun Hospital, but doctors later confirmed that Mr. Pattharasorn had succumbed to his injuries. According to a preliminary statement given to police, Mr. Wuttichai claimed that his younger brother had suffered a bout of violent mania and had chased him with a knife in an attempt to stab him. In fear for his life, he retrieved a gun and fired a single shot in self-defence. Medical staff from Chun Hospital have since joined police in conducting a formal autopsy. Authorities have launched an investigation to confirm the sequence of events and determine whether any criminal charges will be filed. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-04-24.

The incident occurred on April 22nd in the Dong Mada area, near Ban Huai San in Mae Suai District, Chiang Rai Province. Emergency responders from the Chiang Rai High-Altitude Rescue Unit were dispatched to the scene, located on the main road linking Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, a route known for its steep, twisting terrain. Upon arrival, rescuers found the pickup at the bottom of a ravine. A male driver was discovered dead at the scene. His body was recovered and transported by emergency teams, who also coordinated the removal of the vehicle from the hazardous location. Initial assessments suggest that the crash may have been caused by the driver falling asleep at the wheel. Authorities noted the road’s sharp curves and steep incline, which pose a significant risk to drivers who are not fully alert. Investigations are ongoing as officials work to gather evidence and contact the victim’s family to proceed with necessary arrangements. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-04-24.

UPDATE Man, 23, Arrested for Brutal Assault on Monk Over Failed Drug Deal Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Police in Nonthaburi have arrested a 23-year-old man for the vicious assault of a Buddhist monk, reportedly carried out after a dispute involving a failed drug transaction. The incident occurred on the night of April 19th, when two men armed with a firearm entered the quarters of Phra Phromphong, a monk residing at a temple in Mueang District, Nonthaburi Province. The attackers forcibly took the monk from his kuti (monastic residence), drove him away from the temple, and severely beat him before abandoning him by the roadside in Pak Kret District. The assault took place around 23:00. On April 22nd, the Nonthaburi Provincial Court issued arrest warrant No. 574/2568, leading to the arrest of Mr Pharadet, 23, identified as the primary assailant. The second suspect, Mr Ratchanon, 25, who acted as the getaway driver, is reportedly cooperating with police and is expected to surrender shortly. During initial questioning, Mr Pharadet admitted to assaulting Phra Phromphong. While he declined to speak in detail to the media, police investigations revealed that the incident stemmed from a dispute over 14,000 baht allegedly given to the monk to purchase methamphetamine. When the drugs were not delivered, the suspects returned to reclaim the money. Upon learning the monk could not repay them, even after unsuccessfully attempting to borrow the sum from his mother, they beat him severely. Phra Phromphong remains in serious condition following the attack. Authorities are continuing their investigation, and further charges are expected to be filed once Mr Ratchanon is in custody. Picture courtesy of ThaiRath. A 72-year-old man has been arrested after fatally shooting a local headman in Bueng Kan province, in what police say was the culmination of a years-long feud. Police were alerted to the shooting early on the morning of 23 April. Officers from Sri Wilai Police Station, along with rescue personnel and a hospital medical examiner, arrived at the scene in Moo 4, Huai Lik Santisuk village, Chum Phu Phon subdistrict, where they discovered the body of Mr. Piyanat Sianglam, 53, lying on the roadside. He had sustained fatal shotgun wounds to the head and right shoulder. Mr. Piyanat, who served as the headman of Chum Phu Phon, had reportedly been involved in repeated disputes with his neighbour, Mr. Kam Muang Suwantrai, the suspected gunman. Witnesses and relatives confirmed a history of animosity between the two men. According to Mr. Kam Muang, he had long felt threatened and humiliated by the victim, claiming the headman had repeatedly insulted, harassed, and even threatened to have him killed. On the morning of the incident, Mr. Kam Muang saw the headman in front of his garden and, overwhelmed by long-standing resentment, shot him from the second floor of his home using a shotgun. He then went inside to bathe and later confessed to police. A search of the suspect’s home led to the discovery of a long-barrelled shotgun and a used 12-gauge shell concealed under a blanket on his bed. Mr. Kam Muang admitted to owning and using the weapon in the killing. He told police he had bought the gun five years earlier for 7,000 baht from an unknown man for personal protection. Neighbours confirmed the ongoing feud, citing frequent verbal altercations over parked vehicles, livestock, and property boundaries. Mr. Kam Muang, who reportedly suffers from stress-related health issues, lived with his grandson while his daughter and son-in-law stayed at a rubber plantation. The headman’s mother, 72-year-old Mrs. Wipat Sianglam, recounted numerous past conflicts stemming from shared community space and animal husbandry. She described her son as hot-tempered but kind-hearted, while characterising the suspect as deeply resentful and prone to violent outbursts. On the morning of the killing, the headman had reportedly stopped by his garden to feed his horse before taking his daughter to a medical appointment. While picking up a fallen Thai flag from his fence, he was shot. Police have ruled out other motives, including political or official duties and charged Mr. Kam Muang with murder and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He is currently in custody and awaiting further legal proceedings. The victim’s body has been released to his family for funeral rites. Adapted by Asean Now from ThaiRath 2025-04-24. Quote

Drug Dealer Shot After Firing at Officers in Undercover Sting Operation in Suphan Buri Picture courtesy of Workpoint. A notorious drug dealer known by the alias “Bo Tha Kruat” has been left in critical condition after opening fire on law enforcement officers during an undercover drug sting operation in Sam Chuk district, Suphan Buri province. Picture courtesy of Workpoint. A notorious drug dealer known by the alias “Bo Tha Kruat” has been left in critical condition after opening fire on law enforcement officers during an undercover drug sting operation in Sam Chuk district, Suphan Buri province. Provincial authorities launched the operation following numerous complaints about the rampant drug trade and increasing violence in the area. Mr. Piriyah Chantadilok, Governor of Suphan Buri, ordered a special task force to investigate and suppress the local drug network. The focus quickly shifted to a known dealer, Mr. Weerayut aged 35, a resident of Tambon Yan Yao, Sam Chuk. Weerayut, who had a well-documented criminal record involving drug trafficking and firearms offences, was reportedly a high-priority target for Region 7 police. Acting on intelligence, officers arranged for an undercover agent to purchase 200 grams of crystal methamphetamine from the suspect. The deal was set to take place in the early hours of 23 April along a canal-side road between Sam Chuk and Tha Sadet. At approximately 01:30, the suspect arrived at the meeting point on a Yamaha motorcycle. As officers moved in to arrest him, he drew a handgun and opened fire in an attempt to escape. The officers took cover and returned fire, striking the suspect several times. Weerayut abandoned his motorcycle, two packets of crystal meth, a mobile phone, 15 rounds of 9mm ammunition, and an unknown quantity of methamphetamine tablets, before fleeing on foot into nearby woodland. Additional forces from the district office and Sam Chuk Police Station were dispatched to assist in the manhunt. Officers followed a trail of blood deep into the forest, discovering several locations where the suspect had paused to rest and tend to his injuries. At one point, he attempted to enter local homes. After two hours of methodical searching, a 9mm pistol stained with blood was found near black bin bags outside a house in Moo 8, Tambon Yan Yao. The weapon still contained seven live rounds. Eventually, officers located the injured suspect at the back of the property. He was lying on his back, semi-conscious, dressed in a black t-shirt and shorts, and using a towel to cover his face. Emergency first aid was administered at the scene before he was taken to Sam Chuk Hospital. He had sustained four gunshot wounds to his legs and left upper arm, and his left leg was broken. Records confirmed Weerayut had recently been released from prison and had returned to the drug trade. He remains under police guard in hospital, and authorities are preparing to question him as soon as his condition stabilises. Officials hope to expand the investigation and identify further members of the drug network. Adapted by Asean Now from Workpoint 2025-04-24.

Thailand’s Most Wanted Gunman Captured in Dramatic Police Standoff at Southern Resort Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Thailand’s top-ranked contract killer in the southern region, known for a string of violent crimes and a reputation for being heavily armed, was arrested after a tense standoff with police at a resort in Chaiya District, Surat Thani. The suspect, 38-year-old Mr Thanawat, also known as “Ae”, was apprehended by a special task force from the Royal Thai Police’s anti-gang and contract killer suppression unit. Officers had tracked him from Trang province to a resort in Pa We subdistrict, where he had checked in with his wife, reportedly to collect drug-related debts. Thanawat, with nine outstanding arrest warrants, is accused of multiple serious crimes including contract killings, evading court summons, shooting at homes, drug trafficking, and illegal debt collection. His criminal record includes the high-profile killing of a durian trader in Surat Thani in July 2023 and the execution-style murder of a woman in Nakhon Si Thammarat in March 2024. In a previous incident, Thanawat narrowly escaped death when rival gunmen shot him in the mouth in Krabi province, breaking nine of his teeth. He survived and continued his criminal activities. The arrest operation, which involved heavily armed police, was carefully planned after intelligence confirmed his location. Officers surrounded the resort and called for his surrender. For nearly an hour, Thanawat refused to emerge, locking himself in the room. Eventually, with the encouragement of his wife, he surrendered peacefully. Police later revealed that Thanawat admitted he would have “fought to the death” if not for his wife, who persuaded him to give up. He also stated he had watched a recent video of police arresting another gunman, ranked 93rd, on a mountain in Trang just days earlier, and it influenced his decision. A search of the room uncovered a cache of weapons, including a live M26 hand grenade, a loaded .357 revolver, a .22 rifle, and a shotgun, all ready for use. Thanawat is now in custody, and police are expanding the investigation to pursue his associates and further criminal links. Charges are expected to include illegal possession of firearms, explosives, and multiple counts of murder. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-04-24.

Twenty-three passengers sustained minor injuries when an air-conditioned city bus driver, on Route 166, veered into a concrete barrier at the Chaeng Watthana expressway exit in Pak Kret district, Nonthaburi, on the morning of 23 April. Police Captain Thapanapong Phuengmee, traffic inspector at Pak Kret Police Station, responded to the emergency call at approximately 08:40. Emergency rescue teams were dispatched to the scene to assist the injured and transport them to local hospitals for treatment. The incident occurred just before the Chaeng Watthana expressway exit towards Bang Pa-in. The bus, registration from Bangkok, was found with damage to the driver’s side after crashing into the edge of the expressway barrier. Passengers were seen waiting outside the vehicle for assistance. According to reports, around 30 people were on board at the time of the crash, with 23 suffering minor injuries such as abrasions. The driver, identified as 36-year-old Mr. Krit, told police he experienced a sudden blackout while driving from the Victory Monument in central Bangkok. As the bus approached the expressway exit, he momentarily lost consciousness, causing the vehicle to swerve into the barrier. He was able to regain control and bring the bus to a safe stop. Police conducted alcohol and drug tests on Mr. Krit, both of which returned negative results. The bus company’s insurance provider has confirmed it will cover all medical expenses for the injured passengers. The damaged vehicle is being examined further to assess repair needs and confirm all safety protocols were in place at the time of the incident.
