Picture from responders. A routine trip to inspect a rice field took a grim turn when a local farmer spotted what appeared to be a human hand in an irrigation canal. Upon closer inspection, he was horrified to discover a body submerged in the water. The incident occurred on the morning of 9th February, when officers from Pong Pha Police Service Station received a report of a body found in a public irrigation canal near the Baan Ua Arthorn housing project in Pong Pha Subdistrict, Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai. Upon arrival at the scene, police found a blue and white Honda Scoopy motorcycle, bearing Chiang Rai registration number, submerged in the canal. However, the body was not immediately visible, as it had drifted approximately 300 metres downstream. A large crowd had gathered around the site where the body was eventually discovered. The deceased was identified as 43-year-old Boonyanuch, who had reportedly been in the water for several hours. Witnesses described her body as stiff and lying face-up in the water. The first person to spot the body was local farmer Sanong Phrompanya, who recounted the shocking moment. “I was walking along the irrigation canal to check my rice fields when I noticed something that looked like a human hand. When I realised it was a body, I was terrified and immediately called for help,” he said. At the scene, police spoke to the victim’s husband, Thongsuk, 58, a resident of Ban San Sai Moon, Moo 6, Pong Pha. He explained that his wife suffered from high blood pressure and diabetes. According to Thongsuk, Boonyanuch typically left for work as a housemaid in Pong Pha at around 07:20 each day and returned home by 17:00. On the evening before her death, he had not been concerned when she did not return, as she sometimes stayed overnight at her workplace or failed to come home after drinking with friends. A security guard at a local school reported seeing Boonyanuch riding her motorcycle past the school at around 23:00, but as she often travelled this route, nothing seemed unusual. Police investigators examined the area where the motorcycle was found and observed skid marks indicating that the rider had veered off the road and into the canal. It is suspected that Boonyanuch lost control of her motorcycle, fell into the water, and lost consciousness, ultimately drowning. The overnight current is believed to have carried her body to the spot where it was later discovered. Her husband stated that he did not suspect foul play in her death. Authorities have sent the body for further examination before releasing it to the family. -- 2025-02-10

Picture from responders. A fishing trip took an unfortunate turn for an angler when his pickup truck mysteriously rolled into a reservoir, sinking to a depth of 10 metres, despite his insistence that the handbrake was engaged. At approximately 10:00 on 9th February, rescue officials from Pluak Daeng received a report of a pickup truck that had rolled into the Nong Pla Lai Reservoir in Pluak Daeng district, Rayong province. A team of divers was immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, rescue personnel discovered clear tyre tracks leading into the water. Divers entered the reservoir and attached a cable to the submerged vehicle to facilitate its retrieval using a tow truck. The vehicle’s owner, a 26-year-old man identified only as Mr A recounted the incident. He stated that he had been fishing at the reservoir the previous day and was preparing to leave at around 08:00 when he heard a sudden ‘clunk’ sound. To his shock, his vehicle began rolling into the water. He maintained that the handbrake had been properly engaged and was uncertain as to how the incident had occurred. Rescue official Mr Saiyan Yothina, 47, confirmed that the location where the truck had submerged was approximately 10 metres deep, with a floating plastic drum marking the spot. Rescue teams worked to recover the vehicle. Following the incident, officials issued a warning to anglers visiting Nong Pla Lai Reservoir, urging them to ensure their vehicles are securely parked on stable ground to prevent similar incidents. -- 2025-02-10

Picture from responders. A high-speed police chase in Sungai Kolok turned deadly when a suspect, allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine, crashed through a checkpoint and deliberately rammed into two pursuing officers, killing one and seriously injuring the other. The suspect was later tracked down and arrested at a local hotel. The incident began late on the night of 8 February when officers from Sungai Kolok Police Station set up a pop-up checkpoint at the Orakan intersection in the municipality of Sungai Kolok, Narathiwat province. The operation, led by Pol. Lt. Col. Rorpha Dahama, was part of a routine inspection to prevent criminal activity in the area. At approximately 23:10 a suspicious Isuzu D-Max pickup truck with Narathiwat registration approached the checkpoint. Officers signalled the driver to stop for inspection, but instead, he accelerated and sped through the barricade, prompting officers to give chase on motorcycles. The suspect attempted to evade capture by turning into Pracha Wiwat 17 Alley, a dead-end street approximately 700 metres from the checkpoint. Two pursuing officers on a police motorcycle, Pol. Sgt. Maj. Thawatchai Saengngam, the driver, and Pol. Sgt. Sahacha Limwongsawat, the pillion passenger, followed him into the alley. However, the suspect suddenly reversed at high speed, colliding directly with the officers’ motorcycle. The impact knocked Sgt. Maj. Thawatchai to the ground, pinning him under the vehicle, while Sgt. Sahacha was thrown clear. The suspect then continued reversing, dragging Sgt. Maj. Thawatchai and his motorcycle to the main road before speeding off towards the bypass road. Both officers sustained severe injuries and were rushed to Sungai Kolok Hospital. Despite the doctors’ efforts, Pol. Sgt. Maj. Thawatchai succumbed to his injuries, while Pol. Sgt. Sahacha suffered bruises and is now recovering at home. The suspect abandoned his vehicle near a local landfill before fleeing on foot. Inside the vehicle, police found 15 methamphetamine pills and a mobile phone. A wallet containing an ID card belonging to a 36-year-old man, identified as Mr. Saheedi was discovered approximately 100 metres from the abandoned truck. Investigators reviewed CCTV footage and tracked the suspect to a hotel in Sungai Kolok municipality, approximately two kilometres from the landfill. At 05:20 on 9 February, police raided the hotel room and arrested the suspect. During questioning, Mr. Saheedi confessed to being the driver of the vehicle and admitted to using methamphetamine. He was immediately taken for drug and alcohol testing. Authorities extended their investigation to a rented property linked to the suspect in Sungai Kolok, where they discovered 7.4 kilograms of compressed cannabis intended for sale. The suspect now faces multiple charges, including: • Murder of a law enforcement officer • Resisting and obstructing police • Drug possession and consumption • Driving under the influence of narcotics The case has sparked concerns about drug-related crime and the risks law enforcement officers face while on duty. Authorities have vowed to continue crackdowns on narcotics and violent offenders to prevent further incidents. -- 2025-02-10

Picture from responders. A 43-year-old window cleaner was found dead in the sea off Jomtien Beach on the afternoon of 9 February, after his colleagues had been searching for him for hours. At around 16:15 the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Pattaya Rescue Centre received a report of a body floating near the shore opposite Soi Jomtien Beach 16, Bang Lamung District. Authorities, including Pol Lt Sanan Kotanont, deputy investigator at Pattaya City Police (Dongtan substation), and volunteer rescue personnel, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of Somchit Yodrak, a native of Buriram, floating face down near the shore. Somchit, a rope-access window cleaner, was pronounced dead at the scene. Rescue personnel found no visible signs of foul play. Colleagues of the deceased told police that Somchit had been drinking heavily the night before, consuming large amounts of local white liquor. The group, who had been enjoying a holiday in Pattaya, became concerned when he went missing and had been searching for him. They speculated that he had entered the water while intoxicated and drowned. A witness, 27-year-old Wisanthaya, told reporters that she was sitting by the sea when she noticed a body being carried in by the waves. Initially believing it was just a swimmer, she became alarmed upon realising the person was motionless and face down. She then alerted passers-by, who confirmed the grim discovery. Pol Lt Sanan Kotanont has ordered Somchit’s body to be transferred to Pattaya Patthana Korn Hospital, where it will be held pending formal identification and collection by his family. -- 2025-02-10

Picture from responders. A local fisherman was left horrified after casting his net and pulling up a human arm entangled in a black jacket. The grim discovery was made in an abandoned pond in the Lat Krabang district of Bangkok, where skeletal remains had also been found last year. At approximately 10:00 on 9th February, Police Captain Thirayu Wongsingh, an investigator from the Chorakhe Noi Police Station, received a report of human remains being found in a natural pond near Soi Maree 1, off Ruampattana Alley, in Thap Yao subdistrict. Forensic officers, a medical examiner from the Police General Hospital’s Institute of Forensic Medicine, and rescue volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a human right arm attached to a black winter style jacket. Inside the jacket pocket, they found a heavily faded passport, which appeared to belong to a Nigerian national. According to the fisherman who made the discovery, he was retrieving his net when he noticed the human arm entangled in his catch. Startled, he immediately contacted the police. Police Captain Thirayu noted that in April last year, another fisherman had found a human leg approximately 100 metres from this location. Investigators suspect the remains belong to the same individual, who may have died before wild animals scattered the body parts into the water. Authorities plan to conduct further searches for additional remains and will send the recovered body parts for forensic examination. An investigation is now underway to identify the deceased and establish the circumstances surrounding their death. -- 2025-02-10

The collision occurred at approximately 21:30 on 8 February, prompting an emergency response from rescue teams and local police. Upon arrival at the scene, rescue workers discovered a white Toyota Vigo pickup truck fitted with a refrigerated compartment. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Mr. Sitthichai Upree, remained at the scene. Beneath the front bumper of the vehicle lay the unconscious victim, Miss Min Qie, a 61-year-old Chinese national. Residents of Soi 5-6 Pratumnak, reported persistent loud roaring throughout the night, causing fear and sleep disturbances. In response, Pol. Lt. Col. Piyapong Ensan, chief inspector of Tourist Police Division 4, led officers to investigate the property, with a follow up visit. Police then found that the Russian owner possessed the necessary legal documents but instructed him to control the noise levels to avoid disturbing the neighbourhood. During the inspection, police identified the owner as Mr Vaikunda Nadar Thivakaran, a 54-year-old Russian national. He presented legal documents proving his authorised ownership and permission to keep the lion. When questioned, Mr Thivakaran explained that the lion’s roaring was triggered by local residents occasionally throwing objects into the property, causing the animal to become stressed. This, in turn, led to the frequent loud noises that alarmed the community. Police issued a formal warning and instructed the owner to take measures to minimise the noise and ensure the lion does not disturb the neighbourhood. They also advised him to improve security to prevent further incidents. -- 2025-02-09 -

Picture from responders and CCTV below. A shocking act of violence unfolded in Bangkok’s Yan Nawa district on the evening of 8 February, when a man doused another with petrol and set him alight before fleeing the scene. Authorities believe the attack stemmed from jealousy after the victim reportedly began a relationship with the suspect’s former partner. At around 20:30 Pol Lt Manit Trutdee of Bang Phong Phang Police Station received a report of a vehicle fire inside Wat Dokmai on Soi Sathupradit 58/8. Emergency responders, including volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found a white Suzuki Carry parked near the temple’s ordination hall. The vehicle, used to transport watermelons, bore signs of fire damage on its left side. Witnesses had managed to extinguish the flames using dry chemical extinguishers before firefighters arrived. A 52-year-old man, later identified as Rachen Thepmanee, was discovered with severe burns covering approximately 80% of his body. He was immediately provided with first aid before being rushed to Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital for emergency treatment. Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker, known only as “Ploen,” is a former temple driver, aged around 50. He and the victim, a temple caretaker, were said to have a history of personal disputes, allegedly linked to a romantic relationship with the same female. According to accounts, the suspect had broken up with his girlfriend about a month ago and later learned that she had started seeing the victim. The revelation reportedly sparked jealousy, culminating in the attack. “The victim was at the temple selling watermelons as usual. His vehicle was parked in its regular spot when the suspect walked up carrying a petrol-filled bag. Without warning, he threw it at the victim and set him on fire before fleeing,” a witness stated. Further reports indicate that just a week before the attack, the suspect allegedly threatened the victim’s son with a firearm at their home within the temple community. Residents, fearing for their safety, had chosen to avoid confrontation due to the suspect’s possession of a weapon. Authorities are now gathering evidence and reviewing CCTV footage from the temple and surrounding areas. Witnesses have been called in for further questioning as police work to track down the suspect and bring him to justice. -- 2025-02-09

Picture from responders. An elderly man was tragically killed after a speeding pickup truck belonging to a department store collided with his motorcycle on a main road in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The victim was thrown onto the road and died instantly. Police were alerted to the fatal crash on Therd Phra Kiat Road in Pak Nakhon, Mueang District, on the afternoon of 8 February. Investigators from Mueang Police Station, along with medics from Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital and rescue workers from the Pracha Ruam Jai Foundation, rushed to the scene. They found the lifeless body of an unidentified man, estimated to be around 55–60 years old, lying in the middle of the road. Nearby, a heavily damaged green motorcycle without a number plate was discovered approximately 30 metres from the point of impact. A white Toyota pickup truck, registered in Surat Thani, was found at the scene with damage to its front right side. According to initial police inquiries, the victim had been riding his motorcycle out of a side street opposite a local market when the high-speed pickup truck struck him. The force of the collision sent the motorcycle flying more than 30 metres, and the rider was thrown onto the road, dying instantly. The pickup driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. He claimed that the motorcycle suddenly emerged from the side street into his path, giving him no time to brake before the fatal impact. Authorities are now gathering further evidence and witness statements as part of their investigation into the incident. -- 2025-02-09

Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Residents and tourists in Pattaya endured a sleepless night after a lion’s deafening roars echoed through their neighbourhood for hours. Fearing for their safety, concerned locals alerted police, only to discover that the source of the commotion was a foreigner’s pet lion, previously seen being driven around the city in a convertible. The incident took place in Soi Phratamnak, Pattaya, where people living between Soi 5 and 6 reported loud, unsettling roars throughout the night. Officers from Pattaya City Police Station responded to the complaints, expecting to find a noisy party or loudspeakers, but were instead confronted with the unmistakable sound of a lion. Upon investigation, police determined that the two-year-old lion was being kept inside a private residence. The repeated roaring had caused widespread fear and discomfort among both locals and visitors staying in nearby accommodations. Attempts to contact the homeowner or tenant were unsuccessful, leading police to escalate the matter to their superiors. Authorities are now working on possible solutions in coordination with relevant agencies. The same property had previously been the focus of an investigation by both police and the Department of National Parks, after a foreign man made headlines for taking the lion on a joyride through central Pattaya in a luxury sports car. For now, the lion remains inside the house, with the gates firmly shut, as officials determine the next steps to address the situation. -- 2025-02-09
