  12. Picture of arrest. A gang of four thieves responsible for stealing electrical cables along the Pattaya-Mab Ta Phut motorway has been arrested by the Highway Police. The gang, which has caused millions of baht in damages, was caught red-handed attempting to cut and steal cables from an underground duct. The operation was led by Pol. Col. Wanchana Thip-arth, Superintendent of Division 8, Highway Police Bureau, alongside Pol. Lt. Col. Narongrit Ngamchaeng, Chief Inspector of Highway Police Subdivision 1, and Pol. Capt. Chayachet Ittiyaphorn. The officers had been tasked with tackling the ongoing problem of cable theft along motorways after a series of incidents causing damage worth hundreds of thousands of baht each time. On the night of 6 February, Pol. Lt. Singharoj Suebsong and Pol. Lt. Bandit Nualpan were patrolling the area when they received an alert from the Central CCTV Control Centre in Pattaya. The footage showed four suspects attempting to break open an underground cable duct along Motorway Route 7, near kilometre marker 114, in Bang Lamung district, Chonburi province. Officers rushed to the scene and found the gang actively cutting and removing the cables. As police moved in, the suspects abandoned their stolen goods and fled into nearby cassava fields. However, after a swift pursuit, all four were captured. The arrested individuals were identified as: 1. Thananchai Konchantuek, 44 (gang leader) 2. Singha Klaiobcheuy, 33 3. Keng Suya, 20 4. Thananchai, the ringleader, allegedly planned each operation, selecting the target location and working alongside Keng to cut the cables. The other two members were stationed on lookout duty and assisted in transporting the stolen goods. The gang intended to sell the copper wire extracted from the cables to scrap dealers, using the proceeds to buy methamphetamine and fund online gambling. The suspects have been charged with “jointly committing theft of public utilities at night by working as a group of two or more, using a vehicle to facilitate the crime or the transportation of stolen goods.” They have been remanded in custody and will face legal proceedings. Authorities have vowed to continue cracking down on infrastructure-related crimes, which pose a significant threat to public safety and result in substantial financial losses. -- 2025-02-08

  14. Pictures from responders. A crash occurred in the early hours of the morning on 7 February, when a pickup truck crashed into the rear of a parked 18-wheeler on Bang Kruai–Sai Noi Road, Nonthaburi, resulting in one fatality and two serious injuries. At approximately 04:50 officers from Bang Bua Thong Police Station were alerted to the incident and rushed to the scene, accompanied by emergency rescue teams from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation and forensic medical staff from the Institute of Forensic Science. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a Ford pickup truck registered in Nonthaburi, its rear loaded with signage materials and fresh flowers, indicating it was likely used for event decoration services. The vehicle had slammed into the back of a Hino 18-wheeler, with the trailer registered in Bangkok and the truck’s cab registered in Ayutthaya. Inside the wrecked pickup, three men were trapped. Rescue workers used hydraulic cutters to extract two seriously injured passengers, while the third victim, seated in the front passenger seat, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mr. Sa-wang the 49-year-old driver of the 18-wheeler, told police that he had parked his vehicle at around 02:00 to wait for a morning delivery at a nearby warehouse. He was resting inside the truck when he was startled by a loud crash and a violent impact at the rear. Stepping out to investigate, he found the pickup truck lodged into his trailer and immediately called emergency services. Preliminary investigations suggest that either the pickup truck driver may have been speeding and failed to notice the parked vehicle in time or alternatively, police suspect the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the high-speed collision. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and will conduct further interviews with the truck driver. The body of the deceased has been transferred to the Institute of Forensic Science for an autopsy. -- 2025-02-08

  16. Pictures and video from responders. A local fisherman made a horrifying discovery in Ban Chang district, Rayong province, after finding a large suitcase containing the decomposing body of a woman. The suitcase, partially submerged in a pond near a golf course, had a dumbbell inside, seemingly used to weigh it down. Police were alerted to the scene at 17:00 after Mr. Pholpat Phromthong, a 21-year-old fisherman, reported a strong odour coming from the suitcase. Officers from Ban Chang Police Station, along with emergency responders from Siam Ruamjai Rayong Rescue Foundation, arrived at the scene to investigate. The suitcase, a black wheeled Swiss-brand bag, had been locked with a combination code. Upon being opened, it revealed the naked, decomposed remains of a woman with dyed hair, believed to be around 30 years old. The body was too decomposed to confirm her identity, though authorities noted a scar on her chest, possibly from breast augmentation surgery. It is estimated that she had been dead for at least five days to a week. Nearby, police discovered bloodstains on a concrete bridge leading to the pond, suggesting the victim may have been killed elsewhere and dumped at the location. Witnesses claimed the suitcase had been visible earlier in the week, though no one had reported it until now. Ban Chang Police are reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding areas to trace any suspects. Initial inquiries into missing person reports led authorities to a case filed in Nong Kham, Chonburi, where a woman had been reported missing. Investigators are now working to confirm if the cases are linked. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as they continue efforts to identify the victim and track down the perpetrator. Notice issued by police. -- 2025-02-08 ScreenRecording_02-08-2025 06-12-08_1.mp4

  18. Pictures courtesy of Khaosod Raja Ferry Port has conducted an emergency fire drill to prepare for potential battery fires in electric vehicles (EVs) while onboard its ferries. The company is set to launch its first official EV ferry service to Koh Samui on 11 February. The drill, held on 6 February, was overseen by senior officials, including Mr. Phutthaphong Wimonphan, Deputy Managing Director of Raja Ferry, along with Mr. Pramuan Thetsana, Director of the Surat Thani Regional Marine Office, and Mr. Phongwit Inmai, Senior Port Inspector from the same office. The exercise simulated a battery short circuit in an EV onboard a ferry travelling between Don Sak and Koh Samui, resulting in a fire. During the drill, ferry staff followed emergency response protocols. EVs are positioned with a three-metre gap between each vehicle, with two crew members assigned to monitor the vehicle deck at all times. Upon detecting a fire, the crew alerted the ship’s captain and the control centre on shore for support. They then attempted to contain the fire using fire-resistant suits and specialised BF2000 fire extinguishers designed for electrical fires. If the fire proved uncontrollable, a fire blanket was deployed over the vehicle while continuous water cooling was applied to prevent further spread. Mr. Phutthaphong emphasised that the safety of passengers and their vehicles is a top priority. He stated that Raja Ferry has been conducting regular emergency drills and implementing additional safety measures to ensure readiness. “Many people are interested in electric vehicles, and we recognise the need for strong safety measures. After thorough preparation, we are now ready to accept EVs on our ferries starting 11 February.” Initially, the company will operate special EV ferry services twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, along the Don Sak–Koh Samui route. Passengers wishing to travel with their EVs can book tickets in advance online or at ferry ticket offices. Mr. Phongwit Inmai, who observed the drill, expressed confidence in the ferry company’s preparedness. “The drill demonstrated a high level of readiness and safety. Regular monthly fire drills ensure that ferry staff are well-trained, and specific measures for EVs, such as the use of fire blankets, provide added confidence for passengers.” Raja Ferry’s initiative reflects growing awareness of the unique fire risks associated with EVs and marks a significant step towards integrating electric vehicles into Thailand’s ferry transport network safely. The collision occurred at around midday on 6 February, in Moo 7, Makok Nuea subdistrict, Khuan Khanun district. Officers from Khuan Khanun Police Station, along with emergency rescue personnel from Phatthalung, responded swiftly to the scene following reports of a collision at an unofficial railway crossing in a rural village. Upon arrival, officials discovered a severely damaged pickup truck, an older model bearing a registration number from Phatthalung. The vehicle had been violently hit by local train service No. 456, which runs between Yala and Nakhon Si Thammarat, before being thrown off the tracks into a nearby rice field. The impact left the truck completely wrecked. Inside the wreckage, rescuers found the driver, identified as Mr Surin Saeng-arun, 63, who had sustained life-threatening injuries. Emergency personnel worked urgently to extricate him from the mangled vehicle before rushing him to Khuan Khanun District Hospital. Given the severity of his condition, medical teams prepared to transfer him to Phatthalung Hospital for further treatment. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Preliminary reports show that the crossing lacked barriers, lights or warning sirens and it remains unclear whether the driver saw or heard the approaching train. Residents in the area have raised concerns about safety at rural railway crossings, urging authorities to install warning systems to prevent further incidents. -- 2025-02-07

  22. Pictures from responders. A fire broke out at a plastic pipe manufacturing facility in the Kratai District of Samut Sakhon on the afternoon of February 6. The blaze, which began around 14:00 engulfed a large stack of plastic waste outside the factory and the workers’ dormitories. The factory, located at No. 127, Moo 4, Tambon Krai, is known for producing HDPE plastic pipes and fittings for plumbing systems, as well as PE steel-reinforced ducts for electrical cables. Local fire services, along with neighbouring municipal authorities, volunteer rescue teams, and local foundations, rushed to the scene with more than 10 fire trucks and supporting water tankers. The fire caused extensive damage to the workers’ accommodation, which houses foreign migrant labourers, along with a large pile of plastic waste outside the building. Firefighters worked for about 50 minutes to control the blaze, preventing further spread to other areas of the factory. Initial investigations reveal that the fire likely started in the dormitory area before rapidly spreading through adjacent rooms. Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities, though the financial damage from the fire is still being assessed by relevant authorities. The police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, with officers from the Samut Sakhon Forensic Science Unit set to examine the scene to determine the exact cause. -- 2025-02-07

  24. UPDATE Picture courtesy of Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation A female Indochinese tiger, known as the “Phu Toei Tiger,” has died while receiving treatment for injuries sustained from a snare trap in Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Breeding Station, Uthai Thani province. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) confirmed the tragic news, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by illegal animal traps in Thailand’s forests. According to the DNP’s official Facebook page, the tiger had been recovering well, showing normal eating and excretion patterns. However, on 3 February at 15:00 wildlife officials discovered the animal had passed away inside its enclosure. Angsana Mongsub, head of the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Breeding Station, stated that there were no external signs of venomous bites or attacks from other animals. A post-mortem examination was conducted on 4 February at 10:30 by Dr. Phimchanok Songmongkol, a senior wildlife veterinarian, and her team. The autopsy revealed that the tiger was at least two years old and had sustained severe injuries to its right ankle and paw from the snare trap. A 2-centimetre wound was found on its right hind foot. Further internal examination indicated widespread inflammation, including: • Severe infection and necrosis in the right front leg wound • Extensive bronchial inflammation with fluid accumulation • Pericardial effusion (fluid around the heart) and inflammation of the heart tissue • Swollen and inflamed kidneys and renal membranes Additionally, 250 grams of straw and intestinal parasites were discovered in the tiger’s stomach. Other organs, such as the lungs, spleen, liver, and intestines, showed no signs of disease but had begun to decompose. Preliminary findings suggest that the tiger succumbed to multi-organ failure, particularly affecting the heart and kidneys, due to severe inflammation. Samples of blood, organ tissues, and parasites have been sent for further laboratory analysis to confirm the exact cause of death. The remains of the tiger have been preserved in cold storage, awaiting official disposal in accordance with the 2022 DNP regulations on handling protected wildlife remains. As the tiger was originally seized as evidence in an ongoing investigation, officials have logged the case at Lan Sak Police Station, with Police Lieutenant Mongkhon Rattanaburam overseeing the legal proceedings. This incident underscores the continued danger posed by illegal snare traps, which remain a significant threat to endangered wildlife, particularly apex predators such as Indochinese tigers. These big cats play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance and are an indicator of a healthy forest ecosystem. Despite extensive rescue and treatment efforts, the severity of the tiger’s injuries ultimately led to its demise. Conservationists continue to call for stricter enforcement against poaching and illegal wildlife trapping to prevent further losses of Thailand’s endangered species.
