Authorities are also coordinating with the Immigration Bureau to consider deportation. At a press conference held at the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) at 14:30 on 8 February, Pol. Lt. Gen. Trirong Phiophan, CCIB Commissioner, was joined by Pol. Maj. Gen. Wiwat Khamchamnarn, Deputy Commissioner, Pol. Maj. Gen. Tinkorn Rangmat, Acting Deputy Commissioner, and Pol. Maj. Gen. Watchdog Thailand, an animal welfare organisation, filed a complaint, prompting National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Phanphet to order an immediate investigation. The perpetrator has been identified as a Myanmar national residing in Thailand illegally. Cyber police are working closely with local officers in Chumphon, where the incident took place, to track him down. The Immigration Bureau has been contacted to determine whether the suspect will be deported in addition to facing legal consequences under Thai law. Authorities are also investigating whether others were involved. Pol. Lt. Gen. Trirong issued a warning to all foreign nationals residing in Thailand: “Anyone living in Thailand must respect and abide by Thai laws. Those who violate them will face full legal action.” The investigation remains ongoing as police seek to bring those responsible to justice. -- 2025-02-09

  9. Picture from responders. A village headman was killed after being crushed by the rear hatch of a rubbish truck while disposing of waste at a landfill site in Sai Noi district, Nonthaburi. Police from Sai Noi Police Station received a report of the fatal incident at around 18:00 on 7 February. Officers, along with forensic experts and rescue volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation, rushed to the scene in Khlong Khwang subdistrict. At the site, authorities found a yellow municipal rubbish truck from Bang Rak Phatthana subdistrict parked near the waste disposal area with its driver’s door open. Nearby, the body of 61-year-old Saeng Boonrod, the headman of Bang Rak Phatthana, was discovered lying on his back. The victim had suffered a deep wound on his forehead and severe injuries to his abdomen. According to rescue volunteer Padej Thesnarin, he received the emergency call and when he arrived, bystanders had already removed the victim from under the truck’s hatch and attempted CPR, but he could not be revived. Witnesses reported that the truck’s hydraulic system had malfunctioned, causing the heavy rear hatch to fall and pin the victim. It is believed that Mr. Saeng was disposing of rubbish when he attempted to clean the truck’s rear compartment. As he lifted the hatch, the hydraulic failure caused it to collapse, striking him on the forehead and leading to his death. Authorities are conducting a full investigation into the incident. -- 2025-02-09

  20. Picture courtesy of CH7. Two leopard cubs have been rescued after being found abandoned in a sugarcane field in Sub Yai District, Chaiyaphum Province. The kittens, both in good health, were handed over to wildlife authorities for care and rehabilitation. The discovery was reported on 7 February, by Nattaphasut Chotjirasirikul, the district chief of Sub Yai, who informed officers from the Bueng Lahan Wildlife Sanctuary about the presence of the young wild cats near Wat Sub Charoensuk in Moo 5, Sub Yai Subdistrict. Officials quickly responded and arrived at the scene to assess the situation. Upon inspection, two leopard cubs were found, appearing healthy and unharmed despite being separated from their mother. The Bueng Lahan Wildlife Sanctuary has now taken them into temporary care, ensuring they receive proper attention before being transferred to a wildlife breeding and rehabilitation centre. Officials noted that the cubs were discovered in a sugarcane plantation where burning had been prohibited, a measure that likely saved their lives. In many agricultural areas, fields are often cleared by fire, posing a significant threat to local wildlife. The absence of such practices in this area allowed the kittens to survive long enough to be rescued. Authorities expressed their gratitude to the concerned citizen and local residents who reported the discovery, highlighting the importance of community involvement in wildlife conservation. The rescue ensures that these young leopard cubs will have a chance to thrive and potentially return to the wild in the future. -- 2025-02-09

  24. Picture courtesy of Matichon. A Thai Senate committee has launched an investigation into allegations that Chinese investors, with the backing of corrupt local officials, have illegally cleared nearly 2,000 rai of protected forest in Chanthaburi province to establish large-scale durian plantations. On 7 February, Senator Cheewapap Cheewatham, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Environment, along with other key officials and forestry officers, conducted an on-site inspection following complaints from local residents. The investigation revealed extensive deforestation in Makham district, where land had been cleared and excavated on a significant scale. According to Cheewapap, complaints regarding illegal land seizures had been received since late 2024. The Royal Forest Department’s Phaya Khrai task force discovered widespread encroachment in several areas, with some perpetrators claiming to possess land rights documents. These claims are now under review to determine their validity. Authorities have already prosecuted several cases, including two major incidents: • On 26 December 2024, officials seized 105 rai in Khun Song National Forest in Kaeng Hang Maeo district. The land had been cleared, ponds dug, and protected trees cut down, suggesting preparation for durian farming. The environmental damage was valued at 5.9 million baht. • On 28 January 2025, authorities seized nearly 1,850 rai spanning Khun Song, Janta Pae, and Khao Wang Chaeng National Forests in Kaeng Hang Maeo and Khao Khitchakut districts. This land, also suspected of being converted into durian plantations, was allegedly linked to Chinese investors and Thai business partners. The investigation has uncovered links between the land seizures and local politicians, former government officials, and both domestic and foreign investors. Furthermore, there are allegations of involvement from police officers in the area. The Senate Committee on Justice and Law will now oversee legal proceedings to ensure all those responsible, including any state officials complicit in the scheme, are held accountable. Authorities have vowed to prevent further destruction of protected forests and prosecute those behind the illegal durian plantations. The investigation remains ongoing. -- 2025-02-09
