  1. UPDATE Two Teenagers Arrested After Homemade Bomb Kills Nine-Year-Old Boy in Phichit Picture courtesy of Matichon. Phichit police have arrested two teenagers after a homemade bomb left on the roadside killed a nine-year-old boy in an incident that has shocked the local community. The victim, identified as “Nong Nai,” was playing in his village when he picked up a suspicious object, which exploded in his hands. The devastating blast resulted in his immediate death. The boy’s grieving family has already held funeral rites, but until now, the case had seen little progress, prompting relatives to seek justice via social media. For over ten days, the case remained stagnant, with police from Wang Sai Phun Police Station making no significant progress. Shockingly, officers reportedly told the boy’s mother that such incidents were a natural part of life and that teenage bomb-making was common. Furthermore, police initially wrote in their report that the family had no intention of pressing charges, a claim the boy’s mother, Mrs Rasamee, strongly denied. “The moment I lost my son, my heart was already shattered. Then to hear police say such things, it just broke me even more,” she said. It was only after the district chief and local officials intervened that the case gained momentum, leading to the arrests. On 3 April, at 10:00, Pol Maj Gen Thadet Klomklieng, commander of Phichit provincial police, led a team of officers, bomb disposal experts (EOD), and local police to reinvestigate the scene in Wang Sai Phun district. They discovered another homemade explosive near the initial blast site. The bomb was safely detonated by the EOD team, and authorities temporarily sealed off the area for further searches. An hour later, a joint police and administrative task force arrested two teenage suspects, identified as 17-year-old Mr Palm and 16-year-old Mr Man. During questioning, the pair admitted to making the explosive devices, allegedly to use during Songkran celebrations. They also revealed that four other local youths were involved, whom are now being pursued by police. Following their arrest, both teenagers expressed remorse, repeatedly apologising to Mrs Rasamee, who was seen crying uncontrollably. Meanwhile, Pol Maj Gen Thadet stated that efforts were ongoing to locate the remaining suspects and ensure the safety of local residents. Authorities have also contacted the provincial justice office to arrange compensation and support for the grieving family. Local residents, including the boy’s grandfather, Mr Boonmee, 74, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. He recounted the harrowing moment he heard the explosion and rushed outside to find his grandson fatally wounded. “There was another child with him, but he managed to step back just in time. My grandson, however, was hit directly by the blast,” he said. Mrs Rasamee remains deeply distressed, not only by her son’s death but also by the way the case was initially handled. “We just want justice. My son was just a curious child, and he had no idea what he was picking up,” she said. Authorities have assured the family that further investigations will be conducted to prevent similar tragedies in the future. -- 2025-04-04

  3. Picture from responders. A forest fire in Ban Kho, Mueang District, has claimed the life of an 83-year-old disabled man after flames spread to his home, leaving him unable to escape. Authorities are investigating whether the blaze was deliberately set. At 18:30 on 2 April, Police Lieutenant Pan Sang Phuapho, an investigator from Welu Wan Police Station, received a report of a fatality linked to a fire near a home in Moo 4, Ban Kho Subdistrict, Khon Kaen. Emergency responders, including rescue teams and forensic doctors from Sri Nakarin Hospital, rushed to the scene. The charred body of Mr Sanan, 83, was found lying on his back near a clump of bamboo behind the house. His arms and legs were severely burned. A preliminary examination was conducted before the body was transferred to the Forensic Medicine Department at Khon Kaen University’s Faculty of Medicine for further examination. The victim’s 32-year-old son, Mr Chaiya, recounted that his father had been disabled since an accident in November 2024, requiring him to use a walking aid. He lived alone while his son worked during the day, returning home each evening. At around 18:00, Mr Chaiya returned home to find a raging fire engulfing the forest near his father’s house. He rushed inside, calling out for his father. However, upon reaching the back of the house, he found his father had already succumbed to the smoke and flames. In shock, he contacted his employer, who helped alert local authorities. The fire had spread extensively, scorching the area around the house. Police Colonel Pipat Pimklom, Superintendent of Welu Wan Police Station, stated that authorities would meet with local community leaders to discuss preventing illegal forest burning, which has been strictly prohibited by the Khon Kaen provincial government. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire and whether it was the result of illegal agricultural burning. Anyone found responsible will face legal consequences. -- 2025-04-04

  5. Picture from responders. Two people lost their lives, and four others sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision between two pick-up trucks on the Loei-Phu Ruea road late night on 2 April. At approximately 22:30, officers from Phu Ruea Police Station were alerted to a crash near a resort in Ban Bong, Nong Bua Subdistrict. Emergency responders, including medical teams from Phu Ruea Hospital, the Sawang Kiri Tham Rescue Unit, and the Ruam Jai Rescue Association of Loei, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, rescue workers found a white Isuzu pick-up truck (registration from Udon Thani) and a silver Toyota Revo (registration from Bangkok) severely damaged from the impact. Each vehicle had three occupants, making a total of six people involved in the crash. Four individuals, two men and two women, sustained critical injuries, while two men were pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased were identified as Mr Wisanu, 38, from Nong Ao Subdistrict, Nong Wua So District, Udon Thani, and Mr Badin, whose age and address remain unknown. Rescue workers had to use hydraulic cutting tools to free the injured and deceased before transporting them to Phu Ruea Hospital. Initial investigations suggest that the Isuzu pick-up, carrying three passengers, was travelling from Phetchabun towards Udon Thani when it crossed into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the Toyota, which also had three passengers. The crash reportedly produced a loud impact, alerting nearby residents. The cause of the collision remains under investigation, with officers collecting evidence and reviewing CCTV footage from the area. -- 2025-04-04

  7. Picture from responders. A 65-year-old man who went missing overnight after being gored by a wild gaur while foraging in the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary, Chachoengsao, has been found alive following an extensive search operation. The incident occurred in the late afternoon of April 2, when Mr Boonta Seesangat, 65, and a 50-year-old companion ventured into the protected forest in Khlong Takrao, Tha Takiap District, Chachoengsao Province, to gather wild vegetables. While searching for Pak Wan (sweet leaves) in the Ban Khao Kluay Mai area, the pair inadvertently entered gaur territory. A large wild gaur suddenly charged at them, leaving Mr Boonta with severe injuries to his right leg and ribs. His companion managed to hide him under a large tree before rushing back to the village to get help. However, when rescuers returned, Mr Boonta was nowhere to be found, prompting an urgent search operation that lasted through the night. More than 50 rescuers, including volunteer teams, military rangers, and wildlife officers, combed the dense forest in the five-province border region spanning Chachoengsao, Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Sa Kaeo. At 09:00 on April 3, Mr Boonta was finally located, still hiding under a tree in the same area. He had sustained multiple fractures in his right leg, including the upper and lower leg bones and ankle, along with bruising on his left ribs. Due to the severity of his injuries, rescuers fashioned an improvised stretcher from tree branches to carry him safely out of the forest before transferring him to Tha Takiap Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Officials have reminded locals of the dangers of entering protected wildlife areas, particularly as gaur populations have been increasing in the Khao Ang Rue Nai forest complex. The largest wild cattle species, gaur can weigh over 1,000 kg and are known to charge aggressively when threatened. Authorities have urged foragers to avoid crossing elephant trenches and protected areas, warning that similar incidents could occur as human-wildlife conflicts rise in the region. -- 2025-04-04

  9. Picture captured from CCTV. A delivery rider staged a daring armed robbery at a gold shop in a Bang Phli shopping mall, escaping with gold necklaces worth over 400,000 baht. The suspect, wearing a food delivery uniform and a black helmet, brandished a firearm and stole three necklaces before fleeing the scene. At 19:15 on April 2, police from Bang Phli Police Station, Samut Prakan, received an urgent report of a gold shop robbery on the second floor of a popular shopping mall in Bang Phli Yai subdistrict. Upon arrival, officers found shaken employees who described how the armed suspect had stormed in, declared a robbery, and fled with gold jewellery. According to staff, the suspect was a lone male wearing a long-sleeved green delivery rider uniform, black trousers, and a black full-face helmet. Entering the shop, he suddenly pulled out a firearm, grabbed three gold necklaces from the display tray, and fled within seconds. The stolen items included: • Two gold necklaces (3 baht each) • One gold necklace (2 baht) The total weight of the stolen gold was 8 baht, with an estimated market value of 400,000 baht. Following the robbery, the suspect ran down the stairs before fleeing on a motorcycle. Investigators later discovered that he discarded his rider’s jacket and helmet into Khlong Samrong canal near Wat Luang Pho To in an attempt to evade identification. CCTV footage captured the suspect entering the store while customers were browsing necklaces, with three staff members attending to them. Moments later, he rushed in, pulled out his firearm, grabbed the necklaces, and fled in under a minute. One employee recalled the terrifying moment, stating: “A customer was just looking at some gold when suddenly this man rushed in, pulled out a gun, and shouted, ‘This is a robbery!’ Before we could react, he grabbed the necklaces and ran.” A witness outside the mall said: “At first, I just saw him walking quickly. I thought he was going to use the toilet. Then I saw him throw his helmet into the canal, take off his delivery uniform, and speed off on a motorcycle.” Police Major General Wichit Boonchinwutkul, the Samut Prakan Provincial Police Chief, along with senior officers from Bang Phli Police Station, visited the crime scene and later inspected the suspect’s escape route. “We believe the suspect acted alone and was armed. Given the rising gold prices ahead of the Songkran festival, gold shops should be extra vigilant. We are working on identifying and tracking down the perpetrator and expect progress within the next 2–3 days.” Authorities are currently reviewing CCTV footage, interviewing witnesses, and tracking the suspect’s movements. The public is urged to report any information that may assist in the investigation. -- 2025-04-04

  13. Picture from responders. A 73-year-old woman heroically saved her 81-year-old wheelchair-bound husband as a fire engulfed their two-storey townhouse in Sai Ma, Mueang District, Nonthaburi. Firefighters battled the blaze for over an hour before bringing it under control. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. At around 09:50 on 3 April, police at Bang Sri Muang Police Station received a report of a house fire in a residential estate. Six fire engines from Sai Ma Municipality were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters found flames rapidly spreading through the upper floor of the house. The elderly homeowner, who had been sitting downstairs, was unaware of the fire until neighbours shouted warnings. Despite the danger, she remained calm and composed, recalling fire safety training she had previously attended. She rushed upstairs, attempting to douse the flames with a wet towel, but the fire had already spread too quickly. Realising the situation was beyond her control, she immediately turned her attention to rescuing her husband, who was unable to evacuate on his own. The 81-year-old homeowner, who was seated in his wheelchair downstairs, recounted his shock and panic upon learning about the fire. “I didn’t even know what was happening until neighbours alerted us to the smoke upstairs,” he said. With flames intensifying, his wife acted quickly, helping him escape before the fire consumed the upper floor. A security guard from the estate, who had noticed smoke billowing from the house, also rushed over to assist. He shouted for the couple to evacuate and helped guide them outside just in time. Firefighters took about an hour to bring the blaze under control. The second floor of the house was completely destroyed, with damages yet to be fully assessed. Initial investigations point to an electrical short circuit as the likely cause, though officials from the Nonthaburi Forensic Investigation Unit will conduct further examinations to confirm the cause. Authorities are urging homeowners to regularly inspect electrical wiring and remain vigilant to prevent similar incidents. -- 2025-04-04

  17. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Bangkok authorities have announced plans to partially open the Nong Bon water drainage tunnel as construction nears completion. With 96% of the project finished, the tunnel is expected to play a crucial role in mitigating floods in several districts during the upcoming rainy season. Speaking at Bangkok City Hall, Deputy Governor Wisanu Subsompon provided an update on the construction of the Nong Bon water drainage tunnel, which will channel floodwater from Nong Bon Lake into the Chao Phraya River. Construction progress has reached 96%, but the project faced delays due to subsidence near the Klong Kled water intake structure. To resolve the issue, engineers had to re-drill sections of the tunnel. Officials now expect construction to be completed by 2026, when the entire system will undergo final testing and cleaning, although sections of the tunnel will be operational this rainy season to help prevent flooding in key areas of Bangkok. The tunnel has already proven effective, having been partially used in 2024 to manage floodwaters. Once fully completed it will provide long-term flood prevention for Prawet, Bang Na, and Phra Khanong districts, as well as neighbouring areas. The project relies on Nong Bon Lake as a key water retention area, which will collect excess rainwater from surrounding canals before channelling it into the Chao Phraya River via Bang O Canal. Authorities remain confident that the tunnel will significantly reduce flood risks and improve water management across Bangkok. -- 2025-04-04

  21. Picture courtesy of Khoasod. Forestry officials in Thailand have arrested a former village headman after he attempted to sell 315 rai of protected national forest land. The suspect was caught in a sting operation, with officers posing as investors to lure him into a sale. On 2 April, undercover forestry officers, disguised as business investors, approached Mr Chalorng, a former village head from Nakhon Sawan province. He had posted an advertisement on Facebook offering land in the Chai Wiboon National Forest Reserve for sale at a price of 3.5 million baht. The officers arranged a meeting with Chalorng, expressing interest in purchasing the land. They travelled to the site in Phu Nam Yod subdistrict, Wichian Buri district, Phetchabun province, where they requested to measure the land and inspect ownership documents. As soon as the suspect confirmed details about the land’s water sources and access roads, the officers signalled their team to move in. Led by Songsak Kittithakorn, Director of the Forest Protection Office, and Prateep Panyabut, Director of the Northern Forest Protection Centre, more than 20 forestry officers surrounded the area and arrested Chalorng along with a middleman involved in the transaction. During questioning, Chalorng initially gave inconsistent statements, claiming he was merely showing the land to potential tenants for agricultural use. Meanwhile, the middleman insisted he had advertised the land based on the presence of a Por Bor Tor 5 document and was unaware the sale was illegal. However, when officers revealed their true identities, Chalorng reportedly turned pale and admitted he had indeed been selling the land. Chalorng has now been handed over to investigators at Wichian Buri Police Station, where he faces legal proceedings for attempting to sell national forest land illegally. The middleman was questioned as a witness under Thailand’s Computer Crimes Act for advertising the land sale online but was later released. Authorities have reminded the public that national forest reserves cannot be privately sold or owned and have urged people to verify land ownership thoroughly before engaging in transactions. -- 2025-04-04
