  1. I also felt it is from the Bull Frog. When it rains heavily, I can often hear their chorus around my Chiang Mai apartment.
  2. Guns don't kill by itself. It functions only when held by someone.
  3. Looks like they are simply filling in the vacant positions in the Niche Industry where very few Thais apply for/qualified. They certainly don't give any negative impact on Thai labor market.
  4. I suddenly recalled some joke I heard decades ago. It was about the thieves in Egypt. What If they implement Sharia Law(captured thieves will get their right hand chopped off) in their country? Half of the population may have to live without right hand. Or no one loses his hand(bribing the executioners and dodge the punishment).
  5. Bypass Thai Law with Bribes Pretty common thing in this kingdom...
  6. When expats are here long enough, we automatically come to know that defying laws(other than the case of serious crime) is part of Thais' life. I have heard that the health department banned the roadside sale of hand squeezed fruit juice more than 2 decades ago. But that sort of trade is still commonly seen even today. And the enforcers of law themselves, are quite reluctant to implement the little details of their legislation, unless they are apparently benefited to do so.
  7. Very true. I often see the kids well under the license age(seeming primary schoolers) riding motorcycles). In 1970s, I have seen 12-13 YO drive 4t truck(carrying crops) in US Midwest. But their region is very scarcely populated and very little traffic in rural roads, unlike urban Thailand.
  8. Is it WHY Thai traditionalists got upset? Lol.
  9. One great thing about Thailand, the standard of university hospital. A few years ago, I was admitted to their ER in Chiang Mai university hospital. Their treatment was quite impressive; at the first world standard. All of the doctors and nurses could communicate in English. And costed me only less than THB 700 for that day. Buying gold as the form of saving, pretty much like influence, brought in by Chinese. Since they have historically experienced the fall of regime repeatedly (including the loss of monetary system during such period), they value gold as the portable assets. That's why there are so many gold stores throughout this kingdom. Thank you for sharing your personal experience.
  10. Downpour started a few minutes ago(17:29, April 17), in Chiang Mai old city area. How about places?
  11. The biggest reason lies in the level of education. Even though Thailand has attained economic growth in the past decades, they are in the state of Middle Income Trap; unable to create Value Added exports, by the absence of the system that makes it possible. One common phenomenon in this world. Technologically advanced nations are often located in the area of cooler/colder climate. They are always needed to prepare for the cold harsh winter. That is the one big driving force behind their development. But different story in the tropical region, hot year around and easier access to the food, didn't urge them it. Simply because they didn't need constant innovation/improvement of the way they do things.
  12. I checked the price of .22LR in US today. Roughly 7cents/round(in case of bulk buy). Certainly a lot less than one egg($0.52).
  13. They prepared those eggs in advance, to counter the mobs blocking the road? People usually don't carry eggs while they are out and about. Most unlikely combat readiness.
  14. Such as Rule of Engagement: Water splash only on those with water gun; don't shoot the unarmed.
  15. I am not pointing to any specific spot/area. And I don't know about soi24.
  16. In the past 3-4 decades, Thailand certainly made economic growth. But mostly by foreign inputs; very little by themselves. Increased employment opportunities for locals as the first world manufactures brought their factories here. Rapid train system on and under the ground, built with the first world technologies by foreign firms. Regarding the politics and administration, even lesser changes; they got a military coup even in the 21st century; 2014-22. Those with "connection" with the men in uniform of high ranks, can evade criminal charges. Good relationship with the west, it certainly enriched Thailand in the past decades. But it doesn't automatically mean this country got one step closer to the first world. Having more money is one thing. Having a better transparency is another.
  17. One good thing about this kingdom. You can choose where to stay, eat, and buy things, depending on the size of your wallet. In other words, they still serve both High and Low ends. Last year, Thailand opened up its gate to visa waived tourists from 93 nations(used to be 57). Not expecting all of them for the high end. You never have to live in the way you feel "alienated" here. You never have to declare How Much You Spent While Here when you leave Thailand either. While Thailand's consumer price has risen compared to the old time, this kingdom still caters for all levels of visitors.
  18. Legally, it is possible for the visa waiver to open an Thai bank account. But it is up to the discretion of each branch. So try as many as banks possible. Good to say he intends to deposit (at least) THB 800K for retirement visa. As it appeals well. Good luck.
  19. Yes. As simple as that. Perfect example of the Instant Karma.
  20. a foreign tourist ended in swift retribution after he assaulted a female bar worker and mocked Muay Thai, only to be knocked down by a bouncer and then roughed up by a furious crowd. 2 time loser. Beaten up twice in a fight he started.
  21. A drunken incident by a foreign tourist ended in swift retribution after he assaulted a female bar worker and mocked Muay Thai, only to be knocked down by a bouncer and then roughed up by a furious crowd. Another thing I like about this kingdom. Often swift instant justice on the spot, to the senseless aggressor.
  22. The only regret, they didn't finish off that thing; Would Be Mass Murderer.
  23. Another form of silent sabotage by CCP in UK: Circulation of Fake Postal Stamps. Surprisingly, it was openly sold online. Fake UK stamps blamed on Chinese-made counterfeits Royal Mail urged to investigate claims of Chinese-made fake stamps | Postal service | The Guardian
