  1. I totally agree with your sentiment, and rarely ever go back to these places either.

I was searching specifically for a bar with a good happy hour (4-7pm minimum) and glad I stumbled upon this topic before I went and started one myself. The landscape

changes so frequently and is totally unrecognizable from 15 years ago. I was running out of options in the Sukhumvit area.

Anyway, I'm going to run with one of the recommendations I saw here and try out The Kiwi on Soi 8 this week.

Please report if they're honest about their prices. I hate that add-on scam as well. At first I thought it was a requirement for farang-owned establishments.

The Kiwi on Soi 8 doesn't do that crap.

If you go on Tuesday (I'm almost certain it's every Tuesday), toward the end of Happy Hour they fire up a barbecue grill in front of the place. Couple of weeks ago they cooked chicken wings and link sausages, served it with potato salad on the side. Free to anyone there who had purchased a drink. (Word of advice - the food goes quickly and when it's gone it's gone so don't be shy about getting up there and grabbing a plate. The front patio is a great place to stage yourself in advance.)

Not visiting the Kiwi until Thursday, but pleased to know that prices are as advertised.

Did try another place last week that was mentioned in this thread, The Game - between Sukhumvit Soi 7/1 and Soi 9.

Their prices were not as advertised and needless to say a factor in why I am not returning.

The Game has been open less than a week in CNX, and it's already pretty much been given the death sentence. You all know Bangkok Beat? I think it is 7/1 Sukhumvit. Two years ago I went in and they had all you can drink from 8 to 11 for about 360 THB. Including bottles. I did 14 small Tigers, and they seemed almost entertained that I was downing them that fast. No dirty look/frowns or innuendos....but I checked their website and nothing like that now. Happy hour is like from 9-midnight and they do 95 thb small bottles....... not criminal, but that's more than I would pay in the States...but plenty do and then some. Any places nowadays like that, with the AYCD? I heard there is one at Patpong...Blue...something. but it's about 400 for Chang Draft....and I would probably prefer to just 7-11 hop with my beer hugger, and walk around with 30 THB Tigers.

  2. I was offered 230 thb per hour to teach SAT Math. I seriously doubt they would have gotten me the paperwork. No need to jeopardize a perfectly good O-A. Plenty of takers, though. It is necessary to eliminate the illegals. Unfortunately, it may have to get worse (for the students) before it gets better. I would not object to proving my health insurance at all, and I know a lot of the retirees lie through their teeth about the 65000 per month.....often more like 6500. So, yeah, immigration wonders why these people can't pay their medical bills. Selfish as can be. Some were likely in Pattaya bars for 10 years straight, without missing a night (or morning). If they had put aside 100 thb every time they went to a bar......and now carried a high deductible...they could practically pay their premiums with the interest. Health care is so much cheaper here than the US; yet many of the expats refuse to pay their fair share, but instead rely on "help me" pages on Facebook, when they do a drunken motorcycle crash.

Possibly because most private insurance here and abroad don't cover motorcycle accidents and when they do it's only 60-80% of what's charged .. OK if they take you to a government hospital NOT so if they take you to a private hospital!

But I do GET where your coming from.

"most"......so it seems like it might be wise to find one that is not in the "most" category.

  4. 70% of African American kids born out of wedlock......needless to say, parenting plays a large roll in education. Ever hear of Title I? That means there are bonuses for schools with high concentrations of poor kids. The teachers at the top ranked school system I attended, and the ones at some of the most poorly rated schools I was employed at; were pretty much the same bunch of liberal arts degreed, overweight, diabetic, cig smoking, leftist. Much, much bigger differences in the home life of the students; parent's income(s), parent's education, parent's nationality. It most obviously runs in families.

  5. hardware store, just east of 7-11 close to Ikon. First floor. I'll give it 50/50, but their lighting selection is pretty good. I bought a 1.8 kw LED bulb for my out door light, and redid my light sockets to get rid of that old style socket that is hard to get bulbs for. About 10 thb each.

Not wanting to be pedantic but when you say first floor do you mean the ground floor or the one directly above the ground floor? Thanks

ground floor...usually a washing machine and a satellite dish out front. Otherwise Baan and Beyond has a good selection of electrical, also.

  7. I for one am not too keen on the UNIrish pub. Went in one afternoon, maybe a Saturday. I was the only one and all the screens had the same OZ provincial rugby game. Did i mention that i was the only person there? I asked the guy with the beer belly and grey straggly pony tail, seemed to be in charge, if any screen could have some other sport to watch, like golf, esp. Nope, not here, he said.

Amd maybe i'm too poor but 125 baht for a jar of beer is over the top for me. Looks like i will be well positioned to support my 7-11 equity shares, sit on the corner and watch the scooters.

I agree....If I had never been here before and stumbled across it; on a week long holiday, that would be different. The bakery prices seem high, the hot dog and egg breakfast ain't cheap......just no cravings for places like that. I've gone out a few times for special occasions, to get some western food, and have generally been disappointed. Near perfect, cheap thai food, or crapshoot, expensive western imitation food....I'll save the THB for some cold beers that go better with the spicy Thai food, anyway.

  8. you can smoke at the Dayli, also. Marlboros are 92 THB per pack.....I think that is on pair with 7-11, not a cig smoker; I just get my dividends checks every three months from Altria.....seem more solid than Uncle Sam, himself.

  9. In Chiang Mai, it's pay 20,000 bail money, or go to jail for the night, and appear before the judge the next day and get a fine of about 2500 THB. 20,000 refunded. most people would be dead with a BAC of .4........

A car on Sukhumvit is probably about the fifth best way to get around. Bar hopping in a car, and driving? Downright arrogant and stupid. There is a fair chance that you would be in an accident that's not even your fault......things could really go downhill from there.

  10. I've had a few of them tell me how much they "donated." My response was that was a lot less than we would pay for liability insurance in the US, to cover you against slip and fall experts, ambulance chasers, and the whole bit.

  11. I do 40 THB large Leos in CHiang Mai with live music..........all fun, mostly Thai. Haven't seen a fight in there in the 8 years I've been drinking there. Street food is welcome. If anyone knows anyplace like that with cheap cold beer, sexy thai girls (working or not), and no <deleted> who still want to talk about Dick Cheney to every American they meet; please let me know.

Thighlander what is the name and location of this wonderful place in CM please? ( Can pm me if you don't want everyone to know smile.png )

Also is the Drunken Flower still in business? Not sure if it is Soi 1 or 17.

    Cheers.

https://www.facebook.com/daylichiangmai?fref=ts Not familiar with drunken flower....I'll do a search. Also, Dayli does promos on Carlsberg....4 for 270 late, but I don't know if they are less before 8 like the Leos and Singhas. It's soi 11 Nimman....much closer to Srijamkala, which everyone has the hardest time pronouncing and spelling...so we just say Nimman Soi 11. Just east of Grace Dental Clinic....nothing like 4 or 5 cold ones after a root canal.

  12. The mom & pop next to the first 7-11 on that block used to host some raging nights on the plastic stools. Met a ton of great people out there, in spite of some of the d--kh--ds from BWT that could kill any party. Unfortunately, they were closed down last time I checked. Anybody know what happened to them?

  13. Ten years ago I was looking at Uruguay as a possible place to retire to. I was shocked when I saw that the literacy rate there was better than the states. The education system is not what it used to be. I do agree that there are other countries with a better education system than Thailand but the States is not one of them.

The US system is a mess, I have worked with hundreds of people from the US and most are great folks but have little clue about the wider world. I am not having a go at Americans only at the of their education system currently.

another thing that scares / amazes me is that they have metal detectors in schools to stop children bringing weapons in to kill other students <deleted> is wrong with that country?

One of the most important things an education can do is to teach you how to research a question. Apparently, your education was deficient in that regard. It continually amazes me that people who are on the internet, apparently still don't know how to use it. Anyway, I do and used to find that according to the UN evaluation the USA ranks 21st in the world. Thailand was ranked 71st .Uruguay was ranked at 32 The UK ranks 31st.

As for metal detectors in schools...I am sure you wouldn't make such a comment without knowing what percentage of schools in the USA are afflicted with metal detectors. Care to share your data with us? I suspect the percentage is very small, but you must know better. By the way, here's a link to a daily telegraph article about the proposed installation of metal detectors in hundreds of schools in the UK http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1576120/Metal-detectors-in-schools-to-stop-knife-crime.html.

Schools in the US are required to give disabled students the royal treatment, too, often at the expense of the "regular" kids. Billions and billions of USD has been spent just to make the schools accessible to wheelchairs. The K-12 system is in trouble, overall, but each state has its own quirks, and there can be hundreds of different school districts within each state. I attended the top, large public school system in the US; www.fcps.org. Notice their website is is in eight different languages. However, its students come from 200 different countries and 160 languages are spoken. But, what's amazing is that you can drive less than 10 km from the northern edge of FCPS, and you are in one of the worst school systems in the entire country, and yes they do have metal detectors...even with the most strict gun control laws in the US. So, making sweeping generalizations about US schools just shows all you know about America is what you learned in Michael Moore's Anthology, and of course your trip to Disneyworld in Orlando. Our University system is still among the world's best, many of the top schools are public; not private. UVa, Cal Berkeley, U of Michigan, UNC come to mind; all subsidized heavily by the taxpayers and cost less than "Prem" for residents of the perspective states.

  14. WIth the capital necessary to get that place ready and his rent...I would have purchased a small plot of land in a good location, and set-up the outdoor, no frills venue. The difference in 10 years would be millions and millions of THB. When the people come from freezing cold places to get warm in the high season; many actually prefer to be outside; they get enough Legionella exposure from their hotel air conditioners. I've never been to Dog and Bone, but it seems like they've been opened for 4 years + now, and that is an eternity in that area. They must be doing something right. I would continue to support them, if I still lived out there. Otherwise, if a lot of customers go over to The Game; it still may not be viable, and it will hurt some good businesses that have proven themselves worthy.

  15. Shame, I was looking forward to visiting this place when I read about it last week.

Beer - Draught CHang at 150B a pint won't sell quickly, will go off, they'll try to sell the end of the barrel anyway, it'll stink of egg, and you'll sit there looking glum thinking 'wish I was in the UN Irish'.

Most expensive burgers in town, best be top notch. Though from a review above, not so.

Sports bar, can't get a satellite dish? No EPL, Bundesliga, La Liga? What sport do they have?

All this and with the Dog and Bone up the road showing all that, with beer at half the price and top nosh.

One can only hope Dave Duke sees the opportunity to snap it up at a bargain price and try something a bit different in 6 months time. Go on Dave, that would interest me.

Dave actually fitted out this place and opened for business as "The Dukes" a few years back, think he said it was open 36 hours, could be wrong, it may have been 48 hours.

Lady lady from hell stuffed him around.

She then opened it as Rosewood, terrible food, service lousy....

Back on topic, if they don't get their s@#t together it wont last long at all.

    do you mean "Landlady"?

  16. Can someone please clarify where this alleged place is?

I didn't see the last post, and I'm not sure on the where part reading this one.

I assume he's talking about Dayl; Nimmanhamin Soi 11 very close to Thanon Sirimangkhlachan (spelling?). Big open air place on north side of the soi.

There may be other places with 5 Leos for 199 baht before 8 p.m., if anyone knows of them please feel free to post a review.

I couldn't agree more. But, you know how TV is; "Objections without alternatives"...........I have zero personal interest in the ownership of the place. Only my financial interests, as it saves me several hundred THB every time I go. Would love to hear other recs on good places.....but all we get is the same hot dogs and eggs BS.

  17. I think 99% of Thai families would choose Mcdonalds over The Game, and that number would be similar for farang families. The new MCD on Suthep was packed with Thais.....at 4 pm. They love to watch soccer, but they know many Thai places, all much cheaper, that show the games. That restaurant at BWT barely stays in business, and it has a beautiful layout, and is cheap compared to The Game.

  18. Small Chang or SLeo or singha etc 110 baht plus 7% VAT ! Got a pint of German beer (not an actual pint of 600ml but only half a litre, 500ml) for 260 plus vat which took it to 278!

Burgers for around $10 with fries.

They've spent a lot of money out there in an area which just doesn't seem to hold businesses for long.

The massive new shopping complex next door has been in a state of semi completion for months if not more than a year already......Starbucks, Boots, McD etc and a new Rimping.

The Game just feels to be out of place there. It's the sort of place you'd come across near the stock exchange in Hong Kong or Singapore if you ask me.

Still if you're cashed up and want a good night out you'd probably be okay with it.

Not to split legal hairs with you but since this is Thaivisa; 500ml is slightly more than a pint. But if you had an inch of foam in a 500ml glass you would be getting screwed. Anyhow, those prices are way high....they are marking it up almost 200%.....If median household income in HD was above 30K per month; I would be surprised. A lot of the farang are either missionaries or have kids (or both), they have school to pay for. Tons of places showing soccer, including a place right next door that stays open until 3 or 4....3 Large Leos for 200. Most Americans love the NFL, but I just redid the schedule for my team in Thai Time....kickoffs range from midnight to 7:30 am, including a few starting at 3:30 and 4:30 am....and almost all are Monday morning.....so I can't see the NFL doing much for a bar in Thailand...except for a memorable Super Bowl Party. I don't think I would go to HD to watch NFL at 4am Monday morning if they had FREE Heinekens and burgers. I seriously doubt they will run 24/7.

The airport or maybe Airport Plaza are about the only places here that could even come close to supporting a place like that.....remember that western place on the top floor......nice place to go before a flight, with much lower prices than that......lasted several years......

I see very poor marketing research on this one. I've seen so many Chili's and Bennigan's fail; it would be hard to count. And they were in areas with household incomes 10 times higher than HD. I know millionaires, who don't do 10 Dollar hamburgers.

BTW, how is the famous White Plate doing?

  19. But, if you are drinking four month old Lao...just how many times do you think it has been heated up to over 100F, then cooled down, then reheated.......it takes a toll.  My local bar is selling Leos that are less than two weeks old.....Khon Kaen had some that were only 2 days old...it makes a difference.  There is nothing on this planet that I would trust the Laotians with more than I would trust the Singaporeans.  Two week old, gold medal winning Tiger large, or 4 month old Lao lek, made famous by tattooed visa runners?  Also, the practicality of drinking dark beer in a somewhat extremely hot climate???
