I agree that a lot depends on where one is currently living. As someone who has spent a considerable amount of time in tourist ghettos over the years I think this may have jaded me somewhat. When you are in a situation like one where as soon as you leave your front door thai people are on the street looking to scam you, then I think it taints ones perception of locals after a while and can foster a certain amount of negativity in the long run..

I don't think they are as rare as you paint, mike. I have personally witnessed dozens of such attacks over the years. Just because they don't make the papers or they haven't happened to AN members in 30/40 years of living here doesn't mean they don't happen!
