  2. It depends on your goals. Bodybuilders use lots of machines these days as they allow more focus on a stretched muscle which promotes more gains according to studies. For everyday functional strength objects like sandbags are more useful. You can build a lot of practical strength with 2 sandbags.

  6. You can combine the two for a better workout. Weights provide more tension at the bottom and bands at the top. You can do the same with bench press or other lifts. Chains can be used too. A former powerlifting champ uses bands and chains a lot.

  12. Not really. You can move rocks around or do bodyweight exercises or use bands. You don't have to use weights. You could just walk around with a heavy backpack and do some lifts with that. Army guys are tougher than most and their training is nothing like normal gym exercises.
