Here in Bangkok it varies from place to place. Some are nett, others add only VAT on top, others add service charge only, others add service charge plus VAT. That's based on my experiences over the last 3 and a bit years of living here.

Is the establishment legally obliged to show their tax ID number on the bill? I'm looking at photos of computerised bills from random restos across Bangkok that itemise the VAT, however I'm not seeing anything that looks like a TIN.

It's not 17% tax in those establishments. It's 10% service charge plus 7% VAT (Value Added Tax). VAT is levied on the base price plus the service charge so the total additional extra charges are 17.7% of the base price shown on the menu.

On a tangent, the young people these days seem to want to change the term 'farang' to mean all foreigners, not just whitey. One chap on Reddit told me it's because the Thais mispronounce "foreigner". They either don't know or don't care about the conventional theory that it comes from a Persian word used to describe Western Europeans. I was called racist because I dared to point out the truth 🤣

This is why I don't like walking up and down the Cow on my occasional visits to Pattaya. Too many foreigners on bikes riding badly. Thai drivers/riders seem to know how to navigate around pedestrians, many (most?) foreign motorcylists in Pattaya seem intent on crashing into us.

I think you've got it bass ackwards. Alcohol sales are permitted during the lunch period, 11am - 2pm. I've read that the 2pm cutoff was so that the workers would come back from the pub (cannot provide source). I can understand that because when I was working we had to be back before 2pm otherwise the boss would have to come looking for us at the local and drag us back by the scruff of our necks. As for it affecting tourists, that's a bit of a stretch. Tourists can find alcohol just as easily as locals during the 2pm-5pm blackout. I've only not been able to find a beer in weird places like Si Racha where many restaurants refused to serve us between 2pm and 5pm. No idea why, maybe the local BiB want too much tea money or the venues are all holier-than-thou. The only tourists it affects are the kind that want to buy a large Chang in the afternoon and walk around the streets swigging from the bottle. Not that there's anything wrong with that I used to do it myself when I was here as a tourist. Not large bottles though, small cans of Singha Draft. I'm a sophisticated bogan.

I've done that a couple of times when I was drunk. Untrained or unobservant staff didn't notice the red warning that the transaction was incomplete, perhaps because it is in English (BBL app). I had to go back to next day and correct my mistake, it was very embarrassing 😂
