  1. So hard to believe what is / the context of what written in the press but I find these comments a bit odd that the dad says his daughter wrote in the last letter to him ...

"First off, we take a moment to thank you for having brought us into this world in Canada, for giving us good values, for giving us the passion to travel, and especially to just for having been our parents. "

Not sure of the context but sounds like they are saying good bye. Even using a phrase that appears to be in the past tense "for having been our parents" instead of "for being our parents" .. but maybe the father was translating from French, never can know all the facts.

I believe this was written in French and the English translation may have changed the tone of the sentence additionally it is taken out of context from the rest of the letter.

Not for a moment have I ever felt that this was a suicide pact. IMHO

  2. My condolences to the family and friends.

Their rapid deaths and symptoms seem to fit Dengue Hemorraghic Fever.

And so we have another armchair amateur pathologist.

Please Google in Dengue fever and see the details about this virus for yourself, as I can’t be bothered to explain.

I’ve had Dengue fever, twice, and can assure you it was not Dengue fever in the tragic case of these two sisters.

What is the point of making speculations? We have probably not been given the clear facts by the media and will have to wait for if and when more information comes to light.

I think more thought and respect should be given towards the family of these girls and a simple RIP and messages of condolences is more befitting during this time.

I have had Dengue Fever as well.

I said "Dengue Hemorraghic Fever" (which is different) and qualified it with "it seemed to fit" which is a speculation.

    You however;

"can assure you it was not Dengue fever"

Are you a pathologist or tropical disease specialist with ESP?

  3. It is a great shame that some of the information is wrong.

    1. Many studies have shown only a slight increase in the risk of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) after DENV2 as opposed to other serotypes. The only single clear factor that is associated with DHF is a second infection with a different serotype from the first infection. In particular, DENV3 is also quite strongly associated with DHF in second infections in Thailand and elsewhere.

    etc.......

thanks for that ;) at the end of the day we called a Doctor because we had all heard and read the various opinions but wanted a factual response based on local regular experience. i am not questioning your study but really, they deal with this every day and he is qualified "doc". forgive me if I am wrong but i think he is quite clear in which of the four types does what. We had a lot of responses from folk who had had the nasty version and anything that explains the disease well was welcome.

However, if you are a doctor, please PM me and we can share your opinion this week too

good wishes duly passed on to the young lady, thx

Had it last year (thanks to a nasty mozzie) and it was absolutely awful. Must have been the "bad" kind because I was sure that I was going to kick the bucket. Treatment is purely palliative (paracetamol was helpful) but there was one night where every muscle in my body clenched to the point where I simply couldn't bear the pain. Horrible stuff indeed and a vaccine should be created for people living in tropical climes. My advice is DON'T GET IT!

My best wishes for a speedy recovery to the young lady.

  4. I believe Pattaya One is in the process changing servers so that might account for the wrong links.

I often see a farang who seems to live in the 'police hat' post at the end of Soi Wat Boon and Sukhumvit, maybe that is him.

Judging by the photo on Pattaya One website it isn't the fellow stationed at the police hut/hat.

This particular Tarzan-impersonating farang seems slightly older, fairly slim build and sporting a cowboy hat.

Bemused that the authorities offered no assistance other than to coax him out of the tree when he seems to apparently be either suffering some form of mental illness or substance abuse issues.

But I guess it isn't their concern, or is it?

“released without any further action and without ever finding out who the man was”

Isn’t it mandated that all foreigners have their passport and/or travel documents available for inspection by Thai authorities at all times or face possible detention or imprisonment until they can be provided?

What have I been doing jumping through fiery hoops and spending tons of money making sure I have all the proper Visa and paperwork to stay legally in the kingdom when this clown walks without a second look by both police and immigration?

I guess if I want to stay for an extended period in Thailand all I need to do is scale a tree and wait for the BIB.

  5. And every 5 meters there is a "flood control storm drain" which stinks to high heaven of raw sewage making eating in street side cafes or carts untenable for those with a functioning olfactory nerve. I have traveled a bit and lived in a few big cities including Bangkok but I have never encountered the constant wafting of toxic sewer gas at every corner like here in Patters.

  6. Its all in the name in case you did not get that !!

I do get it and in fact have seen Kubrick's film of the same name (though never read Nabokov's influential novel) and realize the connotation.

But to be fair there are a lot of businesses with the same name that have nothing to do with the idea of exploiting children.

  7. I am surprised nobody has mentioned Preecha...its the best seafood in Pattaya although it is about 10-15 minutes out of town in Ban Amphur...go around 6 oclock as they run out of food and its right on the water..great family style eating..everything is live in the tanks and their preparations are the best. Lots of different things to try and its about 300-500 baht per person depending on how much shellfish you order..a great place to take tourists as the crowd is 95% thai...can get very busy on the weekends with the Bangkok crowd

Heartily agree about Preecha. Worth the trip.

  8. In the building in which I live ( no names,no pack drill ) ( you know [/i]who is watching ! )

just about every time there is a storm the TV reception goes out and so I have to 'rescan'.

And you are right ,it's quite interesting which channels turn up.

After three years with 'my TV providers' I have recently discovered 'Bloombergs'

which certainly wasn't there a month ago.

My rescan also moves each channel one or two stops away from where they originally were.

ie.BBC used to be at # 22,now it can be found at # 24 ........??

As the Americans are want to say......................GO FIGGER !!

Actually Bloomberg has been around for quite a while. If you are a fan of American Talk Show "Charlie Rose" I suggest tuning in at 10pm nightly for what is arguably the best hour of talk TV available.

Sophon regularly adds or loses broadcasting licenses for particular networks (For instance they once upon a time had "Star World", then "MNET" and now "Universal") so your idea of the channel setup rescan is a good one to do periodically.

BTW the reason the channels mentioned move from one number to another has nothing to do with Sophon assigning a particular number to a station but more as to how your TV indexes said frequencies.

    Cheers and happy watching.

  9. Have you been to Phuket lately? Current issue of local Phuket rag had story of dead Russian tourist found and fished out by local fishermen.

So I think problem of faring plotters is not confined to Pattaya.

    Yikes.

Aren't there any nice beaches left in Thailand? (Without corpses doubling as buoys?)

  10. define cambo food

    Maybe I meant "Khmer" food.

I was thinking of two dishes in particular, Lok Lahk and Amok which I have never encountered outside of Cambodia.

While they are both fairly simple in preparation they happen to be quite tasty and different from Thai dishes.

I really think Cambo amok and Thai Haw Mok are VERY SIMILAR, almost identical actually.

I don't think there are any Cambo restaurants in Pattaya but certainly the food can be found near the border.

Thai Haw Mok, - I have never encountered in LOS it but a quick search and it appears to be the same stuff I had in Siam Riep.

    Yum.
