  1. Which company would you recommend Sheryl ? BUPA, AIA or a Thai company. I let my UK BUPA lapse a few years back but see the merit in starting again now that I'm past 50 but not keen to pay premiums only to be refused cover at 70. Non smoker and no pre-existing conditions so far.

That's interesting as I read you need to remove the glass coating as the film won't adhere properly to that coating ....

Yes, I had wondered about that myself. Nano coated paint should be super smooth so how does the PPR adhere ? Dunno but three Months and it hasn't fallen off yet :) edges are all firmly in place and not peeling back. Can only wait and see.

Jay Leno made a pertinant point about Merceds and i tend to aggre. After the 280 SE 3.5 they became much the same as everyone else regarding build quality. As anyone who had the Lexus when it came out noticed. My wifes entry level 7 year old 2 seater coups no better buit than Honda or Toyota. in fact its a stupid price imo, but its company owned. so....it.!!:post-4641-1156693976:

Yes Mercedes is definitely not perfect. Their rep took a bashing for their US built SUV quality control disaster. Even their older S coupe range has known fuel tank fitment issues. Both Lexus and Infinity easily compare with Euro prestige cars in terms of quality and often exceed Euro cars in terms of reliability.  I've had a range of both German and Japanese cars over the years and honestly have never had reliability or quality issues with any of them. But my own personal opinion is that I prefer the way the German cars drove and felt.  I prefer the switch gear, the layout and the (possibly only perceived) weight and solidity. My current Merc feels very different to my last old SL coupe. Bodywork is lighter, almost flexible. The interior plastics ( center console and B pillar trims ) are not that special either. But it is based on the "entry level" A series so guess they had to save money somewhere. That said, it still makes the interior of my wifes CX-5 seem cheap and nasty. Funny as previously I had noted that I thought the CX-5 interior was better than our previous CR-V.  But in Thailand the real issue I have with Japanese cars is that apart from the crazy priced GT-R there really isn't anything that I desire.  There is nothing fun and fast on offer ( BRZ maybe fun, but it's not fast ) unless you buy an older car and modify it. I just can't get excited about a Civic, Camry, Maz 3, Accord or Vios.

So if you want a sporty performance car it's back to Audi, VW, BMW, Mini or Merc.  Their range here is also pretty poor. But still better than the what the Japs can offer.

Why not coating the car ?  I didn't even know that plastic exist. Seems weird.

The car has already been nano coated all over. The plastic film is only to protect the front end against stone chips, tar stains and other light impacts.

You've just described one of my favorites.  Deep fried catfish, served up with hush puppies and cole slaw, with french fries optional.  Dipped in red cocktail sauce  with extra horseradish.  Washed down with half a gallon of fresh brewed unsweetened ice tea with a slice of lemon.

The catfish is bland and tasteless, so it picks up the flavor of the spices in the corn meal breading.  In fact, if you can taste the fish, it's probably time to throw it away.  There's lots of excellent meals out there that start out bland and end up famous.  Another one is blackened redfish or grilled seatrout.  Bland fish that end up legendary.

Catfish is one of my favorites too.. Marinaded in garlic, turmeric and other thai ingredients then barbequed slowly on charcoal.

Catfish is an oily fish (like mackerel, herring and salmon etc ) so is rich and tasty. Not like pappy frozen white fish.

what nano coating did they use & what are your thoughts on these?

Too be honest I probably wouldn't have bothered to have it done. But it was included in the car purchase deal. It gets checked and re-applied every service for five years. But after having it on the car for four Months now I'm pretty impressed.  It doesn't stay any cleaner in normal use but the dirt and road grime washes off much easier than my wife's untreated car. Seems to be a lot less work to keep it shiny. Rinse with the hose or jetwash and dry with a microfibre towel. Looks like new every time.

From what I have read it's not a cheap process if having it done by a third party. I've seen it advertised from 15K to 40K Baht. Alternatively it seems possible to buy the nano coating liquid quite cheaply and do the work yourself ( that's probably what I would have done ) Search on ThaiVisa I seem to remember a good thread with lots of detail a few Months back.

Where'd you get you're Ducati done?

    Thanks

Did it myself. Bought a PPF kit for Ducati Sport 1000 on ebay. Not that difficult if you use a hand sprayer filled with water and a touch of washing up liquid. Move the film around till happy then squeegee out the air with a sponge. Lots of "how to" vids on YouTube.

Pdaz the whole matters comes to square one.  there is no proper monitoring of over stayers who are apparently one of the major sources of problems.

True. There is little enforcement  of any sort. Plus in their bid to attract more tourists from developing countries they have opened the doors to more criminals and desperate types who aren't on any international criminal database. If there was more vetting they wouldn't get in to Thailand in the first place.  20 yrs ago Thailand was an 'exotic' destination mostly well healed tourists from Western Europe.

Now as flights are cheaper and people are able to travel the whole World's troublemakers can afford to come and visit. Thailand's bumbling immigration and Police have no way of knowing who is good and who is bad.

  9. Had the front of my Merc done two Months ago. Has a five year warranty on the 3M film but the business has closed already

So try to find an established installer. That way when you need to go back for the inevitable adjustments/re-application they may still be in business. The product itself is worth having. It will prevent stone chips and is pretty much invisible. I've always installed it on motorbike fuel tanks (easy enough to do at home ) and the front of previous cars.

And like everything  it takes a lot of guys to install it here too... :saai:

  10. Years behind the Japanese and other Euro offerings. Built to a price, that's about it's only plus. Starting at just over 8000 quid in the UK. Haven't seen an enthusiastic review.. They all just mention the price and the fact that it's roomy in the back.

Trouble is once the excitement of the bargain price wears off there will only be disappointment. Cheap & nasty hard plasticky interior, gutless engine, poor fuel economy/emissions , only a 3 star N-Cap rating, No way to know the quality of and the long term reliability of the components. A Mazda, Toyota or Honda is a much less risky proposition. Better quality, better economy and better resale.
