  1. i am also thinking about upgrading my security measures. problem is this. i got a new 650R with 1st class insurance.....

but because i financed it...so technically it is not mine yet.....1st clas insurance only means tha you wont have to pay the installments anymore if the bike gets nicked...

thats good but of course still leaves me a bit scared.

I have a disc lock already from company called Abus... There are a German company and I was told with Xena make the best locks. but I havent found any dealer her yet who has them.

Now in additin I would like to get a chain lock also. Does Red Baron (or any other shop in Bangkok) has specific chain locks on sale? I could go the route with buying at home pro as mentioned above but I have the feeling that the Abus and Xena locks are better security. But proof me wrong if I fell victim to some Marketnig bla bla and actually a chain and pa lock from hom pro is fine.

Another question: How do you guys lock your helmet to your bike?

Ive seen these bolt lock types where you install a steel bolt to your bike and then can lock the helmet to it but I find that way too complicated (and ugly). Isnt it enough to just use a long cable lock and run it through your full face helmet and then aronud the whole bike? Or just the handle on the seat? Should be enough for a helmet I think, right?

So if anybody can give me any comments about my questions and knows a good shop that stocks chain locks, please let me know. Thanks!

^^^^ Good idea, what size padlock would you suggest?

    Link to a pic?

    cheers. :)

  2. Well, the situation is this. i would let the shop handle the registration thing. i said this is a necessity and they agreed.

55,000 Baht was the official price I got stated.

There were other 400cc machines in the same shop for about 60,000 - 70,00 baht....one had a number plate already... so that sounded like a pretty good deal.

even if the machine is old, i do get some warranty, half a year and for these machines repairs are cheap anyways.

I looked into the Ninja 250r and the ER6

Somehow I cant really get in to the Ninja 250. Im sure its a nice machine but sth I just dont like about this bike. The ER6 is a monster of a bike and the best deal in Thailand I agree. But 120,000-13,000 Baht is still quite a difference to 225,000 (plus interest so yu end up paying more close to 260,000 Baht within 2 years if you do financing). So thats quite a lot more....... but I agree, the ER6 is really nice.

Well you obviously know your own mind.. But I would say you have to look at total cost of ownership..

    1) any CB400 you pay 130 for will be worth 80 on resale.. People wont pay becuase you did the book.

    2) The parts for a CB will be LOTS more than the ER6

    3) the warranty

If you buy a ER6 ride a year or so your going to sell it on for what 150 plus, after a few years of trouble free riding ?? Loss of 70k.. The CB, higher maintenance, higher part cost, harder to sell, and just generally old and worse, less power etc.. And thats going to lose you 50k in resale plus maintaining it. So the difference in costs is like 20k or so to have a shiny new higher power, good handling bike.

    Just how I see it.

dam_n you bring some good arguments. the thing is that i actually really like the er6...... and i was considering it before...then thought the cb400 could be a good deal.

i really have to go and sit on a ER6. ... i think they let yu ride them on the car park at the kawaks dealer....maybe that will convince me.

  4. Insurance for motorbikes. Its easy for the compulsory and voluntary... You normally wont pay more than 3000-4000 Baht a year for that.

It gets complicated with insurances against theft. It seems that Honda CB400 bikes are stolen the most in Thailand and I have seen insurance companies having policies implemented to not insure these bikes against fire and theft.

Does thaivisa insure this type of bike?

Also, what are your other suggestions for motorbike insurance companies? Any good tips?

All I want basically is a voluntary insurance + theft insurance against a cost of the bike of 90,000 Baht. So I wonder if this could be done. I mean 90,000 Baht is not that much to insure but it still seems to be a problem. Any help welcome!

  5. I read through a coupe posts on thaivisa about registering a used motorbike, just didnt seem to find the answers i was looking for:

My situation is like this: I want to buy a used CB400 from a shop. There is lots available in Bangkok but 95% of the CB400s do not have a license plate at the shops, so are not registered.

So my question is this: Is it easy to register these bikes? I heard people say its difficult to get and this has to do that those bikes are not officially sold in Thailand..... Is this true (that its difficult to register a CB400)? And why?

Also, at this point I think the fee for registering an imported bike like the CB400 is 55,000 Baht. Is this number correct or are the cost for getting a proper license plate different? So I would have to calculate the selling price + 55,000 Baht?

Where would I go in Bangkok to register this bike? What do I need to bring (in the case that the bike is from a shop without a number plate).

  6. mot thai movis on dvd do not have subtitles. this is reserved for their us,uk or even hong kong versions. there are a couple though that do have subtitles. when you go to a shop like mangpong (scorpion) you can just look at the back of the case at the bottom in small letters you will in 95% of the cases see the subtitle languages that are included and for older movies and a few new ones you will find english subs.

What I don't understand is - if they pay to have subtitles made for the cinema release, why can't they re-use them on the DVD release instead of just wasting them. Surely it can't cost so much to put the subtitles into th DVD package.?

Most of the Mam Jokmok movies are released on DVD without subtitles.

The reason why the subtitles are simple: The production houses of most new Thai movies try to sell the movies distribution rights to other countries. Often this will be "direct-to-dvd" releases of foreign distributors... Now if for example the Thai DVD of Ong Bak would have had English subs (which it didn't) then any US distributor would complain....as this means the Thai DVD which costs much less than a DVD in the US could be exported to American people.......

So in order to play it safe and dont mess up a chance to sell diastribution rights to other countries, most Thai DVDs do not havE the English subs.

  7. I was looking for a blu-ray drive for my PC and the cheapest I have found so far is at hardware house (http://www.hwhinter.com you have to click on prices and then search for optical drives).

they have a LG for 6900 Baht. This is a combo drive (LG BLU-RAY COMBO) so it also burns blu-rays.

pretty good deal i guess but maybe there is a better solution out there?

or even a standalone player for a decent price? I wouldnt really mind if it is a standalone player or internal PC drive......I can connect both via HDMI anyway.

  8. Where to buy thai movie DVDs with English subtitles? I asked the guys at street side and they don't know if there are English subtitles.

mot thai movis on dvd do not have subtitles. this is reserved for their us,uk or even hong kong versions. there are a couple though that do have subtitles. when you go to a shop like mangpong (scorpion) you can just look at the back of the case at the bottom in small letters you will in 95% of the cases see the subtitle languages that are included and for older movies and a few new ones you will find english subs.

Or you go ahead and download english subtitles made by fans that you can download from subtitle websites.... just google "movie name" subtitle and you will find one in many cases. A couple subtitles are also on this site here:

    http://www.bangkok1080.asia/items/view/135...for-thai-movies

not too many though yet although it says it will be updated.

    Hope this helps!

  9. Only topic so far i found is this one here:

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Buy-Premium-...-Ba-t89508.html

but its quite old already. What I am looking for are providers of corporate gifts, stationary and usb sticks with printed company logo to be exact.

I found bangkokgift.com online but they are very slow in answering or handing out prices. I had a catalogue of a company that stocks maybe 10% of the products they advertise.

Has anybody any decent shop that does this?? Would be great (not necessary) though if they even have a shop where one could go and check out samples.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  10. Hi,

I am about to get a new bass guitar for christmas. Now I tried to look around a bit online to see where the good shops are in Bangkok... problem was that I couldnt find any info on Peavey bass guitars. There is a couple that seem to have probably the best value from this company that I would like to try but no idea where!

Does anyboday know good (bass) guitar places and especially does anybody know a shop that has Peavey....or the distributor in Thailand?

Any other bass guitar suggestions? model, brand, good value etc? I am looking for sth in the price area of a Peavey Millennium (300 USD).

    Thanks for any help!

  11. thanks for all the quick answers so far.

    @bigbikebkk:

thanks for the map. i have heard about this shop before. it must be the main kawasaki shop in bangkok? I will go check there. how come the quick change to a ER-6N? Any issues with the 250R? Or just in need for some extra power?

Anyway. I am not planning to but right now but in about 3-4 months. So I'll also monitor this thread or will post again to see if then there are still some available. Black is unfortunately the color I did not want to have.

Actually I dont even know yet which colors are available in Thailand from the green, black, blue, red, special edition green/black?

  12. I want to buy a Ninja 250R. Its around 150,000 Baht but I would like to pay 50% down and then finance the rest.

Now I am wondering if somebody knows if Kawasaki has their own financing program or if you gotta hire another company such as cetelem or first choice?

For the latter case, which one is the best, any good/bad experience with any certain financing company?

    thanks for any help.

  13. thanks for the tips so far.

i understand the dangers involved in starting to drive in Bangkok but I drive a car here so long that I feel quite comfortable. In the beginning i would definitely be very careful and choose the roads i drive on carefully.

And I totally agree with the comment that you gotta drive the roads to really learn. All Im looking for in the course is a rundown on how everything works plus maybe some technical basics. The practicing I can do on my own then.

On that red baron website that i quickly scanned I could see that the courses can have up tp 40 people.

I would prefer a bit more private that a mass course like thisa. Cannot imagine this will be very effective.

Are there any links to the Yamaha riding academy? Is this a safety course or really a course to teavh you how to manoever a motorbike?

  14. I drive car here for years already in Bangkok but am interested now to get a motor bike. I had a scooter too here before just not a"real" motorcycle where you have to use a clutch. So I would like to learn first how to properly drive a motorcycle.

I checked a couple of posts about driving schools her on thaivisa.com. None seemed to be specifically about schools for learning how to drive a motorbike, just cars. These posts seemed all to suggest to go by yourself somewhere where there is enough empty space and do it the "trial and error' way.

Well, I might consider that as a last resort to get a friend of mine who has a bike showing me.

I would find it easier though to get some instructions first in Bangkok (or somewhere else might be OK too). I know for a fact that there are driving schools out there just wondering if anybody knows a specific one or has attended one. I know most schools in Bangko require you to talk Thai. This would not be a problem for me.

In Europe they have these "camps" where you go to the countryside for 3 days and learn how to drive non-stop during that time....but I guess that would be asked too much for :o well, any tips on this are appreciated.

  15. I looked at most internet shops for good headphones. I need some with a microphone but that are also decent for listening music.

I was first inclined to buy the Fatality headset from Creative as it offers a great value and is comfortable (I tried it before with a friend). thanni.com lists it but doesnt have any stock and will not get it again too (why dont they take it off the site?)

Does anybody know where I can get this specific headset? Really like that one.

Not so keen on getting a Razer headphones. They are quite pricey and quality is not better.

Any other suggestions? Or a shop that has the creative ones?

  16. thanks for the info so far. I settled at South East pharmacy close to Sukhumvit Soi 15. Found the name somewhere online and it was true, they are cheap. Got original Proscar for 1350 Baht for a 30 talet pack.

I know dosage is different for using it against hair loss. One pill has 5mg, but only about 1mg of the active ingredient is needed per day. So I quarter them and use them this way. Makes the whole process about 4 times cheaper than buying Propencia which is the same thing but already in the 1mg dosage.

Considering the decrease in sex drive and "standing to attention".

After extensively reading about side effects online I found that onle the smallest percentage of users had this effect (2%). And even then, reducing sex drive a little bit wont kille me i guess.

If its too extreme one can still stop taking it. I would like to use it if I hardly have any seide effects but its not that im gonna commit suicide if i cant take it and turn bold (btw: im not bold yet, just starting a bit on the back but should be the ideal situation to start taking Proscar (or Propecia that is)).

Also, as you were taking Proscar for your prostate (meaning you took the 5mg dosage) which is a lot higher that what I take, I guess side effects might be stronger?

Not sure. i will see for myself and then post back here in a few weeks.

I really couldnt find many people complaining about the loss of sex drive. Lets see :o

  17. I want to buy Proscar as Im getting a bit of a bold spot at the back of my head. Not so bad yet so I guess its the right start to take Proscar (I know already that there is Propecia but Proscar is the same and it come cheaper in the end).

I have read the posts on this forum about this matter but they all date back a few years so i would like to have some updated info.

First of all. If anybody is taking proscar: Where is a good pharmacy to buy it for the best price?

Also, where can you find generic Proscar (as far as i know there is a generic version but not all pharmacys have it).

The last info I saw on the posts from a few years back was that a 30 pill pack is 1500 Baht approximately. I couldnt quite figure out if this is for the original or the generic version. If this is for the original version i guess this is pretty fair considering a 30 tabelt proscar pack is gonna last for about 120 days (as I would divide one tablet into quarters).

Anyway, i hope somebody can point me to a good pharmacy that sells proscar and has good prices.

    Thanks in advance.

  18. i got a 1-year visa extension this year ( I already work here for 2 years). So my visa runs still until next year, same as my work permit (which will be cancelled now though from my old company). So that means what. I dont have to leave the country at all and the visa is going to be still valid until next year? So I can just wait until the application for the new one is through?

The seven days to leave Thailand only applies for immigration extensions of stay - not for visa entry

I dont quite understod what the above means. What do you mean by immigration extensions of stay?

  19. i see. i didnt know that, too. And apperently my company also didn't know that. ######. So now my old work permit just got cancelled. I gotta leave the country basically and apply for new business visa with necessary documents from my new job. Then reenter Thailand and have them get a new work permit for me.

I mean, the 7 days will be a bi too short now to have my work permit switched....

  20. My problem is this: I worked at a company that gave me a work permit. When i got it I went to Singapore with company letter to enter Thailand on a Non Immigrant B type visa, then afterwards they applied for work permit for me.

Now I am changing jobs and I have a bit of conflicting information from both sides which makes me unsure.

First thing is that I was told after resigninng my visa will expire within 7 days so I have to reenter the country in that time. Now normall I thought I have to through the same process again:

    1. Get company letter

    2. Go to Singapore (or wherever else it is possible)

    3. Show letter and invitation to work, obtain a non immigran type b visa for 3 months.

    4. Come back to Bangkok and apply for work permit thorugh new company.

But now my new copany told me I can just reenter the country on a tourist visa first! Now this is new to me. I was always pretty sure that on a tourist visa it is impossible to apply for a work permit.

Can somebody please clear this up and tell me if this is true or complete BS. What exactly will be the process for me. I hope that I can get an answer here as the 7 days (if it is really true) are approaching fast.

Also, what are the fees now for the business type b visa?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

PS: I did see this post :

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=134178

but it only answers my question partially as I have never heard of having to leave the country 2 times before, so this also sounds a bit strange to me.
