  1. The one thing you omitted in your OP was how long this has been going on? Days? Weeks?

It is his job, maybe literally, to sell cars. He has a quota and a boss and the finance company salesman has a quota and a boss. So does he hold a truck for you until you deem to go and collect it? What would your attitude be if you popped in tomorrow cash in hand only to be told sorry we sold your truck to someone else because you didn't come and get it and now you'll have to wait (insert period of your choice). If the salesman is at fault it is because he didn't tell you OK I will hold the vehicle for x days or your order is good for but you have to give us x days notice of your intention to collect.

Why order a vehicle if you can't pay for it when it arrives. The salesman is probably just as p'ed off with you as you are with him.

A question of cake and eat it too?

  2. If you have a Honda, they give you booklet with numbers of Honda dealers you can call in every province, and they will come out and provide roadside assistance. That's what the Honda dealer told m. Never needed or tried it yet though

Provided you can speak Thai!! I very much doubt Honda dealers in the back of beyond will be able to speak English!!

    Dogpoo,

Can you draw a picture? Have you ever been to a pantomime? It is not difficult to find a friendly pick up driver anywhere in Thailand?

Best way to avoid this is to do what Scuba divers do and always ride with a, or more, buddy(ies). If you must travel alone at least get a piece of paper and have a Thai write on it something akin to "My motorcycle is broken and I need help to take it to a motorbike repair shop".

  3. It sounds logical in an illogical way, but I don't see it. Sure the chain moves at around the same speed but a chainsaw need lubrication for the chain rubbing on the bar and to lubricate the cut,not necessarily for the chain per se. Also the tacky nature of chain saw oil would attract dirt and dust on a bike. Whereas as you will know chain saw users take care not to get their saws near the ground where they will pick up dirt. Like anything else it is a personal choice. Any farm shop should have chainsaw bar oil. If you can't find it I am happy to walk to Husqvarna to see if they have it.

  4. Where is the "classic" (or shall I say "old") VW club in Chiang Mai? Website?

I am sure there is a VW club branch in Chiang Mai if you say 20-30 years old and are fluent in the native language you will have no problem. One of the benefits of owning an old car is that you will have many friends who love to drive slowly in convoy and stop every 50kms for a coffee.

I have a friend with an old Rover 75 he is out with his friends almost every weekend at some rally or other.

If the cars in question which you still haven't identified are in fact VW's there are many places to buy spares etc. Third party insurance is enough to cover your liability towards others. Your damage will be up to you.

  5. It IS illegal to mount a sidecar on your bike, you can get fined by the police anytime they want.

All the food vendor sidecar bikes we see are also illegal but not very likely that anything will ever be done to try enforce the law regarding this, we all know they got much better things to do than harass a poor street vendor that earns money legally.

I owned a Tiger Retro w/sidecar and the sidecar was in the green book, thus legal, you can't get a aftermarket sidecar in the green book, thus illegal.

So if the bike is originally registered with a side-car it is legal? Like food vendors, Walls, Nestle..So side cars are legal. What you are saying that it is illegal to add a side car to a bike without taking it to Land Transport Dept. and getting it registered as a combo?

Legal or not, I am going to have one

I am in Chiangmai and per the OP am after a traditional style, not a food cart welded box with the death shimmies

In any case I now have a much better handle on the engineering involved to make a leaner style car, whereby the bike leans and the car remains level. I am thinking to go this route rather than a rigid hack due to the more traditional solo bike handling. What is needed now is the tub.

Anyone seen a traditional style tub for sale?

PM sent about my friend in Chiang Mai. He has a side car complete with the leading link suspension etc..He imported the side car and an ex sidecar racer in Phuket fitted it.

  6. That's an interesting point. Some US cars/trucks have a foot operated parking brake which is not super convenient for hill starts so maybe the double sized brake pedal evolved from the need for a more convenient method of hill starts by holding the car with the left foot on the brake. UK/EU drivers are taught to hold the car on the "hand" brake during hill starts so on an auto would not need to use the left foot at all.

Could the foot brake have evolved because of the front bench seat?

OT Had sex here once, can't remember where the parking brake was!

  7. Can you remember seeing one in Bangkok?

There is one about 50m down Rama 4 from Sukhumvit or about 150m from Phrakanong BTS prices are stuck on the bikes. Another cheaper but... is alongside the over pass on the other side of the klong from Rama 4 walking towards Tesco On Nut.

There are also a couple of dealers on Rama 4 a bit further down walking towards soi 42 but don't know if they have used.

  8. Assuming they are illegal which i don't believe they are, how come Nestle, Walls etc use them to sell ice cream?

Here's one with a license plate.

    another?

    How come Tiger sells these?

Sometimes I wonder if you guys think everything in Thailand is illegal. It used to be trailers for transporting bikes now they are common and used to carry small boats and jet skis you have all switched to side-cars? Sure I wouldn't want to see them everywhere either clogging up small roads but...

  9. Not sure where you get your numbers from but 18-20% of fuel converted into usable power is considered good maybe 26% on a really efficient set up. F1 maybe as high as 34% but nowhere near 70%. Diesels maybe 30-35% but nowhere near 90%.

There might be a litle bit left somewhere but... Ok 3 cylinders is a start, offset bores like Honda motorbikes, et all.

Strangely I noted from a TV show the other day that petrol/gasoline air mix explodes, whereas a diesel air mix burns. Subtle but explains the different characteristics.

  10. Well there are a few shops with used scooters in the 20,000 range and less near me in Phrakhanong, in Bangkok. Mostly credit company repossessions. So there must be places in Pattaya.

Get out from in front of Craig's list, Bahtsold etc.. and travel around a bit and you will find them. If in doubt use motorbike taxis they usually know where stuff is. There might even be somewhere on the baht bus routes especially to Jomtien or Naklua.

  11. I am thinking of getting a traditional styled sidecar rig - no Thai food cart abomination but a proper Steib style chair on a suitable bike

Anyone seen such a thing for sale - must have the chair on the left

    Location?

    Type/size of bike ?

    It's been dome before.
