  1. The problem is, if he's going to buy a bike in the States in place of importing a CBR150, the last street-legal two-stroke sports bike in the US was (I think) the 1982/83 Kenny Roberts replica RZ350 liquid cooled bike. I almost bought one new, but Vernon said it was dead below about 8000 rpm. Canada had the RZ500, but they weren't legal in the States, although I saw one that was trailered in from Canada in the Florida Keys. Likewise, Suzuki Gamma 500's were not legal, but there was always a gray market.

Then again, I'm pretty sure I saw an Aprilia 250 in Houston, around 2003; don't know what it was exactly.

Not sure why the comparison to 2-stroke. CBR is 4-stroke. At least the last time I looked. :o

  2. Why does it matter where my location is?
Because obviously you are not in Bangkok otherwise you would know where the Phra Nang Kloa bridge is. Had you had said you are in Krabi,Phuket or Chantaburi for instance I probably wouldn't have bothered replying. I just happen to know where it is because I have been past it numerouus times. You asked, I told if it isn't helpfull sorry about that.
  3. I am looking for a dealer in second hand parts for VW, does anyone have a good contact? if so could you either PM me or post a reply. Cheers

Only VW places I have seen are just before the Pra Nang Kloa (spelling) Bridge there is one on either side of the road on the East (bangkok) side of the bridge on the U-turn road that goes under the bridge.. Helps when you ask these types of question if you state your location.

  4. My question is: Has anyone gone from South East Asia to Europe as a passenger on a cargo ship and if so:

    What was it like?

    Where did you go?

    Costs etc?

First answer no I have not do SE Asia to Europe, I did however used to be in the Merchant Marine. Yes some shipping lines do take passengers. We had 6 cabins for passengers who shared the upper deck and steward with the captain. If you are happy with your own company and like reading then it is a very peacefull way to travel. The class of the accomodation and service depends on the shipping line. Also there is no guarantee about what ports you stop at and maybe whether or not tline he ship actually ends up where it was supposed to. Ie. you may get sent to South America, in which case I beleive they will give you the choice to fly home or to stay with the ship. It all depends on the shipping line as I said.

It is not for everyone and not for people trying to save money it is for people who want to experience life at sea. I'd say go for it.

Do your homework by contacting European Owner shipping lines but stay away from container ships. They only stop for hours and it maybe at night.

Here's a start Bank Line I used to work for Blue Star, which is no more.

  5. I bought a 12 yr old Yamaha tzr 2 stroke 125cc bike a while ago, it's a nice bike however it's burning oil like something else and pissing out smoke. I mean REALLY pissing out smoke. I've a good mechanic that fixes the little things that go wrong from time to time but there's a massive language barrier.

Is something like this fixable by buying a new engine part (is it the carb??) or is it unfixable and signals the end of the road?

It's a nice bike and I don't wanna see it go.

    Thanks

General comments: As I have an NSR not a TZR. Firstly it will smoke when first started and for about the first kilometer or so. It's got oil injection? Correct? Have you put any oil in the gas/petrol tank? The only oil it can burn is either in the petrol/gas or in the oil tank. If you haven't put oil in the gas then you need to get the oil injection system calibrated (involves adjusting the cable. The other cause could be that it's running too rich , proabably caused by the air filter being clogged. First drain all the gas/petrol out and refill with normal gas/petrol. Go for a long hard ride at least a mile or two at as high a speed as you can. Two strokes are like thoroughbred horses they need to be ridden hard. if that doesn't cure it.

Go to the nearest Yamaha main dealer which has a workshop and get the air filter replaced, the spark plug replaced, the oil pump adjusted and probably now the exhaust cleaned out. Oh and from now on only use Shell Advance VSX two-stroke oil. It's in the black can at the Shell station or 7-11.

  6. Hi, I can buy a very cheap 2007 vigo, problem being it only has air con, no climate control, and no in cab heater.

I cant find anyone who has fitted one here in UK, but sure I have read on here that it can be done.

Has anyone any experience of doing this ? and what other parts would one need as well as a heater motor and the obvious pipes.

Does the plastic dash need replacing or cutting ?

Any sound practical advise would be most wellcome

I have many times had "Steamy windows" with a nice girl in the car, but constantly steamed up through lack of heat in the English winter is not my kind of fun, though I probably wont drive it myself !

Thanks in advance for any usefull replies

Talk to Andy at Expat Motors the same Expat Motors who sponsors this forum. He will know where as he imports Thai trucks

    into UK.

  7. I found a guy in Pattaya who can get you an exhaust. What else do you need?

    hi vocalneal,

yes im in jkt, and yes i already went to all the motorcycle shop district in here. its called kebon jeruk in jkt. :o

the problems are, all the engine parts that all the shop owner are selling, they said to me that if you want the part made in thailand it is much better in quality but more expensive. which i dont mind at all, all i want is to increase my performance a little bit. using small bikes is really nice and effective in jkt, as the traffic is a killer during peak rush hour. im sure you know what im talking about......... :D

so thats why im planning to shop for engine parts in bangkok, cus im going there for a vacation anyway. so i could spare 1-2 days just to look for engine parts and muffler etc.

i dont want to troubled you too much, really thanksful with all the information that you've given to me.

i think i just go to saphan kwauy and go shop by shop and ask.

i also check on google about bangkok bike shops, so its like a day trip for me. i dont mind about it at all.

the reason i post a questions in this forum, its just i think i need more information on someone who actually lives in thailand although i already have the google info for bangkok bike shops. dont want to get lost thats all. :D

GT-riders??? is that somekind of a forum?

one more silly questions, saphan kwauy is in bangkok right? :D i dont think i will be travelling to pattaya, i will stay in bangkok only couple of days then i will go to cambodia.

    so thx once again.

Go to < www.tygaperformance.com > send an email to Matt, he knows where the exhaust is and maybe could be persuaded to get you more stuff. He can mail all the stuff to you or find it and you can pick it up. If he can find some stuff he might even just tell you where it is.

Saphan Kwai is a stop on the Bangkok skytrain system there are three large-ish motorbike accesory shops that have most stuff for Thai bikes.

Or try < www.faddybike.com > but they are aimed at European customers so prices are well......

Edit. Just remebered where this link was < http://www.aseanmoto.com/main.html > most of their stuff should be available at saphan Kwauy but Bang-Na Trat is not far from the On-Nut end of the skytrain line in a taxi.

  8. what should be my next step? undo the ignition component? where can i get the tools? locksmith/car or bike mech?

u may be thinking honda dealer will sort things out for me... i just wanna know my most cost efficient options...

Go to www.tygaperformance.com and ask Paul if they will pop down to the Honda dealer and get you a new switch assy. While you are at it buy a new Tyga exhaust :o

  9. Porting, polishing, matching, crank balancing, flywheel cutting, cam grinding and jetting.

I just Love this kind of talk...

Modern road engines are pretty well sorted. With advances in casting technology etc.

I'm not sure I have the energy anymore but yes it is satisfying to optimize everything. I.e I spent some hours porting a standard Wave head with a die-grinder and had an egg cup full of aluminium fillings all over the spare bedroom. Then a friend said he knew where to get an inexpensive "big valve" head. When it arrived the as cast size was bigger than my gouged out one. Sounds logical but when one is living in the jungle :o

  10. "On a small single it is easy to just weight both pistons" single with both pistons, this is confusing....do you mean it is easy to balance a single? or its easy to balance a two? Did you ever balance an engine?

As the article says there are two components the reciprocating and the rotating. There are two types of balancing static and dynamic. The piston is only part of one. The reciprocating. So if the new and the old piston and gudgeon/wrist pin assy.weight the same (statically balanced) there is no change. If changing the connectiing rod the same logic applies. So both should be the same. Most kit suppliers know this but I cannot say they do it. In truth the increased weight of the new piston does not effect the rotational balance of the engine but any extra weight would put large stresses on the connecting road assy. The effective weight of a piston at 10,000 RPM is measured in tons! My 115cc Wave "kit" came with a larger gudgeon/wrist pin and a beafed up connecting rod.

To answer your question yes and no. As we were a small team (car racing) and didn't have a dynamic crank balancer we did the static balancing ourselves and then got the crank crack tested , nitrided and then balanced by someone who did.

  11. Changing an engine's displacement by altering the bore, with replacing the stock cylinder and head with a bore-up kit, we also need to re-balance the engine.
On a small single it is easy to just weight both pistons, new and old and machine the new one's skirt to the same weight.
  12. im currently in indonesia at the moment.

    Where in Indo.

Silly question but if you are in JKT have you been to the motorbike shop district?

I can't remeber what it's called. If you are in JKT and don't know what area I am talking about I may still have a contact in JKT I can ask. Last year he got me a 115cc cylinder, piston and big valve head for my Honda Wave/Astrea.

Have you thought of posting same question on GT-Riders?

  13. does anyone know where i can find a cheap and reliable place to buy a piston, rings and gasket???

I'm a conservative rider... but still struggle to get 200k's out of 10lt.

Did you ask Matt or Paul if they would pop down to the local Honda dealer for you?

If you get really desperate let me know.

Fuel I used to get a bit more than that but it's a long time ago. My 250 gets about 10kms / litre.

150's Oil consumption is around 1000kms per tank.

Oil of choice should be Shell Advance VSX or Ultra it came second in a test for lubricity. Sorry can't remember the 1st. . Here I have only found VSX, which is what I always use. Ask anyone who has ridden with me. One of the stipulations is that we must stop at Shell gas stations!!

  14. A few years ago bought my b/f ............Am thinking of upgrading him to a Harley Davidson model FLHTC Electra Glide classic (as a birthday present) cost about 627,000 B according to Harley dealership in Bangkok.

    Is the Harley worth it??

Harley is bigger so gently discuss bigger/heavier bikes to see what he says about them. Otherwise I am sure he will love it as it is a gift from you. :o I think Harley has an outlet in Chiang Mai.

  15. The poster who said HD riders are the motorcycle equivalent of the Mac users of the computer world is on the right track.

The HD is an image vehicle. ....so many are more concerned with the image they project than the machine they are riding...

And here in Thailand, unlike N.America, where many H.O.G. owners are professionals, most of the Farang owners have opted for the "outlaw" image. If the Thai people were aware of the negative connotations associated with color's wearing riders, I doubt they would be happy to see so many of them here..

Stick with the Honda, You get just as dead if you are hit while riding a bike that would pay for a house in this country as you would if riding a Honda Phantom.

    HarleyDavidson = over-kill...over-priced.

    Seen recently :

What is the difference between a Harley and a Hoover?

The location of the dirt bag :o

    OR

The difference between a Harley and an old cattle dog

The dog can get in the back of a pickup on his own.

  16. anyone can help pls???

    thx

    YTO,

Short of me going to Saphan Kwauy and asking I don't think there is any more I can do. I still think if you go to your local Suzuki dealer and ask . What have you got to lose? Or get on a motorbike taxi and get them to take you to every motorbike shop they know. Ask around and find out where your nearest motorbike racing is held and go to a race meeting and see if they have a Raider class.

Where are you located? If you are not in a major centre then it will be difficult.

Have you gone to all shops in your area and bought every motorbike magazine? If in doubt go to the nearest bus terminal they will sell magazines there.

This is the same basic legwork that we must all do to find stuff. You can always do it sat infront of a PC.

  17. Thank you all so much for the information regarding bikes - I finally purchased the Trek 3900 at 10,500 from Probike. They gave me a 15% discount without me asking so the bill with accessories was 9600.

    Many thanks for the info.

    Good choice, enjoy

Now you can go to the Bike Hash Bike Hash

  18. but now they are going for the cable (approx 200m long) that have been replaced 2 times, due too theft.

How common is this around, and is there any trick to avoid this?

    Thanks

    I love a puzzle!

Would it be within their means to provide fuel if you bought them a portable diesel/gasoline pump? Which they could take home.

If not you might consider hiring a contractor to bury the cable for them, but this has to be done properly as potential thieves may just connect a pickup to the end and drive away. Of course they could bury the cable themselves, but it needs to be quite deep and done with maintennace in mind. No good if you bury 200m and thieves steel the first 20!

What is it connected to at the supply end? How come the thieves didn't steal that as well?

  19. Hi all and thanks for interesting thread!

I live in Pattaya and so close to Bira Circuit. I'm interested to know if any of you know how to get involved with racing on a CBR 150? I would like to practice my need for speed on a race track rather than the streets of Pattaya, as many folks seems to do...

    Regards, Jay

    Jay,

Interseting question. How hard are you trying? How serious are you? Maybe someone already does this an will jump right in. The other possibility is just ride the CBR and buy a KLR? (the Kawa mini motard) and race that. Might be easier to find the group.

    In the meantime:

Ride to Bira. Go to the office and ask.

Ride around and visit every motorbike shop you can find until you find one where the guy races and start talking.

go to www.highsidetours.com and take a couple of lessons.

  20. My neighbor asked me to look at his CBR 150. He claims he rides 6-8 kms and then he has no power. (insert CBR150 lack of power joke here)

I followed him on a ride and sure enough on the Hwy he just runs out of speed. His homegrown fix is to stop and remove the gas cap. This is accompanied by a large hiss, and then he can run at speed for a while.

    Anyone else experience this?

We took the tank off and there is no vent pipe to block, so one can only assume the tank vents through the cap, but inspection doesn't reveal anything obvious. I thought maybe the vacuum fuel cock was leaking and pulling a partial vacuum in the tank but because the cock is below the fuel level that would also result in the bike running very rich, which doesn't appear to be the case?
