Well, a remote user can use the vulnerability caused by the rootkit to do all kinds of nasty things.
Take control of your machine, feed you spyware, keyloggers, scan for credit card details etc etc.
No Antivirus or conventional spyware removal tool would be helpful either.
As the rootkit effectively hides itself from the system.
It's "superhidden" to use a simple term.
A real pain in the butt.

Newsweek International
Jan. 29, 2007 issue - In 1866, the British ship Great Eastern lowered a grappling hook by rope down to the frigid Atlantic Ocean floor far below. Its quarry: a line that had snapped the previous year during one of the first attempts to lay a transatlantic cable connecting the United States with Europe. One hundred and forty years later, repair ships are performing the same task, using essentially the same methods, in the Luzon Strait between Taiwan and the Philippines. They're trying to snag at least six cables that were damaged in a massive Dec. 26 earthquake off the coast of Taiwan. The mangled cables are out of reach of remotely controlled submersibles often used in such work. By the latest estimates, the task won't be finished until at least mid-February.

One sure way of obtaining almost instant shutdown/startup, is to install
windows 98 onto a top of the line computer of today.
I run win98 on a virtual machine inside XP, and that baby is just flying !!
Alot like putting a small jockey onto a big horse

Sometimes you need to hold in the power button for a looong time
for it to shut off.
regarding the login problem,
Go to http://ubcd4win.com/ and download the bootCD maker program.
(You need your XP install CD).
Create the bootCD on another computer and boot from it.
Use the tools on it to reset the administrator password.

I think the right price structure is like this:
256/128 500B/Month
512/256 700B/Month
1024/256 1000B/Month
1024/512 2700B/Month
Wrong, 1000 baht/month.
Yep, you are right.
I actually took the prices from a TOT Broadband flyer I had lying around.
I guess things have changed since that one went to press.

Oh noo not again !
I just hate doing the "move channel routine".
Took me a long time, the last time.

One solution might be the new SSD (Solid State Drive) from SanDisk.
Brief description:
The drive, which is based on the SSDs of Msystems', a company which was recently acquired by Sandisk, is scheduled to become available in 2007 for enterprise users and will offer about half the capacity of today's entry level notebooks with traditional hard drives (60 GB). However, it is performance and power savings that sets the SSD apart from an ordinary hard drive.
The file access rate of the Sandisk SSD is rated at 0.12 milliseconds, compared to 19 milliseconds of a hard drive. At least the random read rate is about 100 times faster than what a hard drive delivers and, collectively, the features provide enough performance to boot Windows Vista Enterprise in about 35 seconds, Sandisk said.
Price: $600 (US)

Is this one of those new "Non volatile" memorys ?
I read somewhere, unlike flash (which is volatile), the Non volatile
memory products will have an almost unlimited lifetime...

Ahummm, the CPU isn't much larger than a stamp.
With it's cooling plate it's about half the size of an diskette.
IF it were the size of a small book, how do you think laptops would look today ?
Regarding CD/DVD door speed, if you can't wait for the slider door to open, I guess you must be in a BIG hurry, lol
Is Thailand the right country for you ?
Examining the startup items on your computer, and only keeping the neccessary ones, will undoubtedly speed up your boot/shut down time.

From the end of this month Microsoft expects the vast majority of consumers in Thailand to shift from Windows XP to Windows Vista.
Ya, right

I'm starting to get worried now.
I guess in the stoneage, those guys were really aware of reliability.
Chisel and hammer onto granite = shelflife +/- 10.000 years

I don't know what stored properly means. The disks were stored in the original plastic boxes they came in. I never bought bulk disks that come in a stack in a round container. Since the disks had no visible signs of any fungus or other damage, I was surprised to hear him tell me that. I did Google it and found out that it does happen. I'll stick with my USB hard drive.
Plastic boxes are a big no no to store CD's longtime in.
I brought my whole CD collection to here from abroad,(all in Plastic boxes),
the fungus got most of e'm.
Apparently moisture builds up inside these containers, unless very well ventilated, or air conditioned.
The best storage is the CD book with paper backgrounds I have found out, for long storage.

Maybe we could put up a "Thailands most wanted" poster on the web somewhere, with pictures(mugshots), of all the shops and shop keepers to stay clear of

Don't know if you saw it on Mythbusters, put a CD in your microwave
and nuke it for a few seconds.
FBI guaranteed data annihilation !!

It all comes down to storage.
Even cheap Princo CD's will last for years if you store them properly.
I have several of e'm made years ago, stored in a good quality
"CD book", with soft paper background.
They're still going strong.
Offcourse I also handle them like a mountain blaster, insering blasting caps
to avoid scratches !
Wellknown fact about Princo, Don't ever put e'm in the sun !
Especially not under the cars wind screen.
It'll ruin them in a day.

A good way to rule out hardware as a cause is to download the bootable "Knoppix CD".
You boot from it and run your system.
If it still restarts, hardware failure.
If not, probably software related.
You can download Knoppix from here:
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix-mirrors/index-en.html
Use this one: KNOPPIX_V5.1.0CD-2006-12-30-EN.iso
The one above is quite large, around 700 mb.
If you like a smaller version (In iso format) you can try "###### small Linux"
It's only about 50 mb:
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html
Both these CD's are full linux systems that can be run directly from CD or usb stick.

The easiest thing would be to make sure you have a TV out connector from your graphics card.(If not buy one, dirtcheap, about 1500 Baht)
(that little yellow phono connector). You connect that straight to your TV.
For sound, use an adapter cable with the same phono output, also connects directly to your TV.
Personally I burn to DVD and watch in one of those "3000 baht standalone players".
