  1. Owned by Sondís Manger media Co? If I remember right: I sent an email regarding a new magazine project and got an answer from a foreginer. Maybe it was you...

Does anyone remember the Thailand Times? I used to work there and could tell some stories about working for a Thai newspaper :o
  2. Crap papers, the business section and entertainment section are almost entirely based on press releases. Same goes for all these English language freebie magazines, only blue skies and great reviews. BK Magazine seems to be the only mag with integrity.

Have anyone read a bad restaurant review in The Post?

Anyone can boycott whatever they wish, I guess.

As an adult, I find that I can filter out what I disbelieve and without knowing the "official" line, I can't guess at the real story.

If you view current authorities as an enemy, then understanding that enemy makes sense, no ?

  3. Flew Sri Lankan to London some six months ago, In my humble opinion the service, food etc was better than Thai air, European carriers etc.

    Go for it.

i need a cheap 1 way to london from BKK..i was looking at going airasia to maccau get boat to HK then oasis HK to london cheap, but long journey, also sri lankan airway was 15000 baht to london via somewhere but they dont seem the best airline to take! anyone experience flying with sri lankan or any other cheap offers from bkk?

hi all... new to bangkok, am curious as to how to go about hosting a midscale tented event (1000person) in the city. which public offices to contact? persons? any help whatsoever would be greatly appreciated!! thank you so much...
  5. Okay, so Global is a one store operation. As always, thanks for the comments.

    Doro

Central Group has Home Works located on the 5th floor at its Bagna central Shopping Centre.

Many a time I have lugged tiles, bathroom fittings, tins of paint ,electric gear...Consumer units, earth rods,MCBs etc down in their back lift which is handy for the ground floor car park.

Anything heavier they can usually guarantee delivery next day.....ie. New bog fittings, floor tiles, doors, windows .....and prices OK but Global (already mentioned ) in Chiang Mai is a LOT cheaper and its located on main Sarapee road turn left at x-roads when going to San Kham Peng.....cant miss it it BIG... :o

  6. Thanks for this information. Been living in Thailand for a long time, but can´t recall Centrals Home works though. Same goes for Global house.

lannarebirth: do you know who is behind Global house? Website only in thai, so I can´t figure it out.

    Once again: thanks guys.

No. Home Pro is by far the largest such retailer. Central Group has Home Works (which the one time I checked prices they were at the normal Central Group levels). There is also a Cement Thai brand name used for there building materials stores which I believe is used country wide but stores will vary greatly (more a re-branding of mom & pop like 7/11). Most hardware stores are still independents and each city will have several. There are also large tile/appliance type stores and some are multi outlet type places. Several are on Ratchada here in Bangkok.
  7. Blizzard.

"all kidding aside........lol. if you can run a business well get your ass to bangkok and open up a taco bell near soi 4. thats worth a shot. enuff people coming and going and we would have something besides mcdonald and kfc".

Why haven´t the "big boys" at Yum! thought about this?

..:"believe me dude if there was money to be made on your wifes land location, somebody would already be making it.

there must be a reason the big boys dont invest there. one good reason might be aint money to be made there".

  8. Sunbelt,

A lot of kudos to you, your wife and your staff, that keeps starting businesses and is not afraid to try new concepts.

In my book, you and OMC (and a few others) stands out on the "farang F & B scene". You have done your home work, stick to the plan, and believe in your self and your concept. Add a lot of hard work, and some money and you can create successful business in Bangkok and Thailand.

Seen to many businesses that thinks "as long as I am open the doors, the business will boom". The infamous location on Sukhumvit Soi 23 (Highlanders pub etc etc) comes to mind, among many others.

The meat was pretty good, except for the carnitas, which bore no resemblance to any carnitas I've ever eaten. I am from San Diego, CA, however, and realize that this might be a tough act to follow.

Are the carnitas you had in San Diego the sweet type? This as I predicted before will happen. It just depends on where you were raised on what you expect a meat or taco to be.
However, the real surprise was that 'soft' tacos were served on flour tortillas!! Ludicrous! Flour tortillas get soggy quickly, and are brittle, causing the taco to fall apart. I have spent a good bit of time in Mexico, both at the border, and in the interior, and unless otherwise requested specifically, soft tacos are ALWAYS served in smallish CORN tortillas, usually two per taco.
Here again it just depends where you are from. Some parts of northern Mexico and the USA serve flour instead of corn tortillas. Others use corn. We have no problem giving corn or flour tacos. We sincerely want to make you happy with whatever, you like your taco to be. By the way we make the corn tacos ourselves from 100% ground corn.
The manager there said she would gladly make tacos in corn tortillas
Very true. 99% of the customers want the soft flour tacos so that's what they'll be reaching for to make your soft taco. If that happens, please just ask for the corn, till they get to remember you.
Really, a great effort, and good value. Look forward to trying some other menu items.
Good to hear. Thank you very much for the comments and stopping by.

  9. Hi,

Been in one of the 1 bedroom in Belleville, liked it a lot. The same person used to stay in the House by the pond, so this might be a give away.

I'll stay in Bangkok for two months and I have to decide on accomodation...

After checking out the options, it's basically down to two possibilities:

    - a room in House by the Pond, but NOT in the White (better) building

    - a room in Belleville (near HBTP), has been recommended to me, but I've never even seen a photo...

has anyone stayed in any of the two (especially Belleville which isn't as well-known as HBTP)?

    Thanks a lot

    zoe.

  10. Simcity,

The "stolen" concept was a retail business, and it was a long time ago. More into niche things in food and beverage now. And what I try to acomplish right now is to "sell" ideas on how to develop existing business.

Not wanting to patronize you but :

Open your own, make it a success and franchise it !

Some restaurants concept done this way and are successful with the franchise .

  11. Thanks for the inputs.

I see where you coming from, they can "borrow" the idea, screw it up and burn it. I am amazed to see a lot of Thai companies screw things up when it comes to execution of business concepts and maintaining the same. Some of them seem to focus on a six month plan, and then hope for the best.

Not sure if it’s the way to go, but if I do some "name dropping" of people I know and worked with, it might get some more weight to it.

Many moons ago, I was quite desperate and stupid, so I sent a business plan to this large Thai corporation, four months later I see the same concept being launched from this company,.

They did however withdraw it from the market six months later. They did every mistake in you can possible do. Coincidence, who knows. But after this, I try to be more careful.

If it would give them any 'advantage' NOT to steal your ideas then they wont.

however if they liked your ideas and we not bound to you to implement them - of course they would borrow them.

So unless you can hold them hostage, dont tell them

  12. Hi,

I have some marketing and business development ideas aimed at the food and beverage industry in Thailand, or more specific they fit a certain type of restaurants.

My problem is that there is no way to protect the ideas, most of them needs to be executed in a certain way, but if someone wants to steal them, it’s sort of up to them.

I would like to approach the restaurants, one at the time (have a list), and present my ideas, I am a bit afraid to “loose” them. And there is no way that a company will sign a confidentiality agreement as I have not had any prior business with them.

What is the way to go? Just send them and hope for the best or leave them in my drawer.

    Inputs, highly appreciated.

  13. Hi!

Off topic, is Pizzeria Uno and Knickerbockers bar still around? I was there a long time ago for a couple of nights.

I also remember going to some seedy joints in Bridgeport and New Haven, but that is another story.

Subway originated in my CT hometown and they are a great company. I say they can do what they want regarding receipts. When I go to the Sukhumvit subway stores, they always give me a receipt and I find it annoying cause I dont want it. I never understood receipt fascination. Having run a retail establishment, I found people needing receipts to be annoying. If someone really needs receipts for expenses, there are 1001 ways to come up with them
  14. My take on this: a lot of clubs and restaurants in Bkk (and other cities) believe that they can bank on the initial success forever. Lack of solid business plan, marketing plan and a long-term business strategy will eventually close the hippest and most urban f and b outlet.

Add that some places are funded with dad’s dosh and the owner doesn’t give a rat’s ass if the place goes bust or not.

I also believe that chain five-star hotel bars in South East Asia has lost its appeal a long time ago.

    Thanks for all the information.

I am there for 2 nights on a Wednesday and Thursday so going to go to Q bar, Bed Supper club, and a few others.

The only problem is thought I dont want to have to jump in a taxi to go to another high rated bar. Is there not a certain place or Soi in Bangkok that caters for the higher end bar/club.

I am not going to go to the nana cause cant be bothered with go-go's.

I am staying on Sukhumvit Soi 5

A lot of bars/clubs start out high-end for the first 3 months and then go low-end when the hi-so punters move on and the freelancers/freelancer worshippers find out about it. The only one I can think of that's stayed high end is Met Bar, and that's because it's the only members-only/door policy bar in the city. Added to that it's still friendly and fun. 87 went down, Mystique was a good club but closed, Hu'u is too quiet, Koi is good for a pre-club drink (dress up), Syn at Nai Lert is dead, Qbar now home to the above clientele, Bed can still be good on some nights. Other than that, go Thai and head to Thonglor if you're young, Astra or Flix at RCA or Ratchada (The Resort, White House) if you're older and want to look at expensive white women in a Thai businessman's environment. Middle of the road must be Zantika on Ekamai (if you can handle the music).

  15. I'll never forget the look on a Thai colleagues face when he tried his first bean burrito. Was sort of like the look on a baby's face when they first try solid foods. Not entirely bad, but just didn't know what to do with it. That said, I very much look forward to a place like this opening in Bangkok. I've had many "Matt's Mexican Fiesta's" (complete with sombrero's for all guests) at my home over the past number of years and the preparation times for each item (as Sunbelt Asia has mentioned above) is killer, if you want to do it right. Would be nice next time my wife has a hankering for some Mexican, we could pop over to Sunrise Taco for a fix.

    I have three suggestions.

#1. Ensure at least the beans are vegetarian (i.e. no lard. This is sort of a selfish request, but I believe others would appreciate it. If you want to add fat to the beans, veg oil works perfectly fine).

#2. Have some hookup for delivery. I don't know what/if the restaurant has to pay to be on Food By Phone's list, but I think it would certainly help business since a great deal of foreigners are ordering from there.

#3. As people have said, Thai's have different tastes (if you're going to generalize) as well as different nationalities/regions of foreigners. Not that I'm a big fan of Pizza Co, but...they went and made their pizza's appealing to both sides of the fence. You can have farang style (with the traditional toppings) or Thai style (shrimp and ketchup, or whatever else...). Same could be done with Sunrise Taco. The base (taco shell / tortilla) and filling (beans, rice, meat) would stay the same and the numerous sauces could help customize to Thai or foreign tongues. Fresh guac / mole / salsa, or sweet chilli sauce with flossy pork garnish. Up to you, right?

Very much looking forward to giving this place a go!

  16. Fragrance chain: Good value for around 35 sings dollars, easy to jump on the MRT to and from the airport (five minutes walk to hotel from Aljunied station). And as Jingthing mentioned great and cheap food "ethnic food".

If memory serves me right, takes about 20 min with the MRT to get to Orchard.

    .

Agree with Jingthing. Fragrance has about a dozen budget hotels in Singapore.

These are budget hotels but not fleapits.
