Lived in my house for many years, recently Thais have made a business in the house right behind us, music, machinery, constantly slamming doors, shouting etc I'm learning to live with it,  cannot get into dispute with them as I'm sure it would turn ugly quickly!

A few years back we bought a new-build villa in a Ubon new housing development.

People in the street right behind us bought a house and the no-house land next to it. They built a small hangar on the empty lot and started a cottage industry of recycling second-hand clothing they were buying by bag loads somewhere. Not really what you want to have as neighbors in a new middle income estate.

And then they went big! They extended their hanger and stated working day and night. Not really big noise but loud voices and heavy car traffic. They were now too obvious and somebody (not me!) reported them to the estate developer and the economic authorities.

So one day soon thereafter a dozen cars and trucks with BKK plates showed up carrying all sorts of officials. Most in some sort of uniform. A few police too.

Anyway they told the "factory" people that a cottage industry was OK. Daytime only. But that a full scale undeclared factory was not allowed in a housing estate.

So the cottage industry has resumed but no more voices outside and the activities' must stop by 6PM and on WE and holidays.

  2. Had a similar problem three years ago with a brand new Acer AIO that I bought through Lazada.

Received it promptly, unpacked it, installed it. Perfect. Exactly what I wanted.

But on the very first shutdown it would power down normally but stay shut down (power light OFF) for only three seconds and then restart by itself.

I reinstalled the PC again but same ghost restart.

Thus, if I didn't want to screw Windows by unplugging it while it was shutting down or restarting  I had only three seconds to unplug the PC.

TGF had a hard time persuading the seller/Lazada on the phone that the machine was defective and finally just sent it back by Kerry without further blabla.

Lazada reimbursed me and I went on to buy a Lenovo AIO.

  3. I have over 1000b credit with my DTAC but I still lost my number a couple months ago.

They CXD my number because they said I didn't make a call for over a month.

    Second time this happens.

First time a couple years ago.

It was a waste of time to have to update PayPal, Facebook, banks, etc.

This time my Thai wife managed to get it back after much blabla but they admonished me that from now on I must make at least a couple calls a month.

This must be a recent requirement as I used to go on vacation for months at a time in the US and Europe without losing my DTAC number even though I made no calls with my DTAC phone while away.

Unlike my wife I have very little use for my mobile.

Up to a  few years ago when I as living in BKK I had a TOT landline number.

Early last year I bought a 13K Baht Binai laptop. No warranty. Came from China.

I was only looking for a cheap laptop with a good 15.6" screen to watch YouTube outdoors in the evening. No gaming.

That Binai had a great screen but went clonk with a bad SSD just 6 months later. It was a bad buy. I dumped it. I didn't want to fix it.

Then I bought an 11k Baht 15.6" screen BMAX. Warranty one year from factory in BKK.

Brilliant! Came quick in super packaging.

A good buy. I'm totally satisfied with it. I'd recommend it.

Here is the one I have :

Yes.  The merit is made by giving the thing.  It doesn't really matter if they are being reused or not.

It's like with the releasing the birds.  People think it is doing a good thing because the birds are being released, but the birds would never have been caught and put in a cage if it weren't for people wanting to release them and the birds suffer more form being in the cage.  The net suffering of the birds is more than if they were never caught in the first place and the people that pay to release them cause that suffering.  So anyone who pays to release the birds is actually doing more harm than good and must surely be accruing negative karma.  But they don't see it that way.

I'm totally with you. This practice is cruel and makes no "merit making" sense.

A long time ago, in my early days in BKK I was visiting one of those big BKK temples and I tried to convey as best as I could my dislike about this cruelly idiotic "merit making" practice to a well-dressed Thai lady who had just bought the "release" of a cage of these unfortunate creatures. The blank look she gave me! I'd leave the matter alone these days as indeed those temple bird catchers could be nasty if you interfere with their activity.

I once read that these birds are fed marijuana seeds so that after their brief freedom flight they'll come down to earth dizzy and be easily harvested again.

  6. Cannot help you with the shingles but want to warn you about possible termite damage to your Sala.

A few years back TGF had a Sala delivered to our new-built Sarin house in Ubon.

Evert-hing fine until we went to live in our other house in her village.

We visit the Ubon house rarely and soon discovered it was being attacked by termites.

Had some guys spray and fix it.

We have now moved it to our village house where we can keep an eye on it and repair what still needs to be repaired.

A week ago or so I received an email from the Belgian Embassy in BKK (email sent to all Belgians registered at the consulate). They're looking for a gardener for the small but very beautiful Embassy garden in BKK. Salary 18000/mo. Obviously they're looking for a Thai but maybe our Thai wives/TGF know somebody ? ????

  8. I renewed my car and motocy licenses in Ubon last year. First time I renewed  in Ubon. I used to do it in Pattaya.

Went with my TGF. She had to show her ID and Tabian Baan to confirm the TM30 we did when we moved here a couple years ago.

No problems, we got it on the spot but it took an extraordinary long time for the IO to enter all the necessary info in the computer and draft the certificate.

The DLT is indeed on the North Ring Road. On the N side, have to take a small lane off the road. It is signed but you'll have to ask probably. Google it and you should see its location.

The Immigration office is on the Uni campus. Covid precautions but no appointment.

I don't think there is any appointment  necessary at the DLT. Just the usual Covid precautions.

YOU MUST wear a mask at both places!

  9. First thing is to get a Non Impeachment to Marriage affidavit from your British Consulate. That involves an "interview" in person with you and your TGF by an official at the Consulate. Check with your Consulate to get a date and what documents to bring. There might be problems with this Corona chaos.

Then you'll have to get that document and your passport officially translated in Thai.

Then you''ll go to the Amphoe with the translated document and go through the process there.

Your TGF will be "interviewed" there. You not as the document you got from the Consulate translated in Thai serves as "interview".

They just called me at one point to decline my full name.

I'm Belgian. I applied for the document on 02OCT19 at my Consulate in BKK.

My TGF arranged for translations and then it was a simple thing to go to the local Amphoe.

    We got married on 23APR20

Immigration can ask for any other documentation they want, regardless of any perceived irrelevancy. It's stated in various police orders.

In this instance, just nosiness I reckon. Maybe test them on the next Ret Ext and don't produce the marriage certificate until they ask. If they don't ask, TiT. If they do ask for it, TiT.

Yes. Nosiness more than likely. And, I too was thinking that we'll bring the certificate along but produce it only if asked. I bet they won't ask for it!  ????

Are you living where her tambien baan is for? if yes that is the only proof of address you need.

They may want the marriage certificate as additional proof of why you are staying in her house if that is the case.

Yes. But I could be just a guest in her house!  No need to be married to live together! We lived together unmarried many years in Pattaya before moving to Ubon and eventually getting married in her village.

Presumably she had previously submitted a completed TM30 as your housemaster? If so I find it surprising that the notification slip which, I take it, is stamped in your passport was not considered to be acceptable proof of address. That has certainly proved sufficient in my case for my past few retirement extension applications at Rayong Immigration!

Yes. She did a TM 30 two years ago when we moved from Ubon to the village.

That TM 30 is duly stapled in my passport.

And she had done a TM 30 some years ago when we moved from Pattaya to Ubon.

  13. Ubon. I went yesterday for my NON-IMM O extension in Ubon.

Simply Retirement, not based on marriage. With the 800k in the bank as I've done for many, many years before.

My new Thai wife (long time TGF, we got married a few months ago) was with me. She drives the car so it's natural she comes along.

No problems but this time they asked what relation between her and me. Marriage. OK. They then asked for a copy of her tabian baan and her ID card.

Fortunately she had the tabian baan with her just in case it was requested for my address..

And at conclusion of the paperwork process they told her to come with our marriage certificate next year.

Bizarre. I only wanted to extend on the basis of the 800k, not on marriage.

  14. Solved.  The SSD. had gone bad.

The wife got a friend's husband who once worked IT at the local village hospital to check my laptop and he quickly found out that the SSD is kaput and needs to be replaced.

Cost 2000b. Not worth it for me as I fear more problems later with that laptop.

This laptop is new from March and is used only 4 hours a night!

I've just ordered a BMAX X15 with a 15.6'' display from the store at Lazada. Price 10000b.

At least here I'll have a local one-year warranty if things go wrong!

The wife will sell the Binai laptop to whoever wants to pay to fix it.

Thanks to all for the answers. ????

Check the English manual that comes with the laptop for instruction of how to boot into the BIOS setup. You can look within to see if the SSD is being recognised. If not, it's a simple M.2 2280 SSD replacement. Have no idea if SATA or PCIe.

English manual should also have some kind of contact for support for the laptop. If not, try: [email protected]

    No manual.

No mention of SSD in the BIOS pages setup.

I'll drop it off at our trusted Ubon computer repair shop.

As Oldie suggested, have you checked (or reset) the current UEFI/BIOS Boot Settings yet?

This is beyond me. I'll have a computer repair shop in Ubon check what can be done.

Internet said that taking the laptop battery and the BIOS battery out for 15' could reset the settings I think you're mentioning.

    Worth a try.

I took the back cover off to see if at least I could take the laptop battery out for a time but it didn't look that simple and I left it at that.

The BIOS page that comes on immediately at switch on is alive and I did click every setting that could be acted on but no Windows reboots.

I'd hate to lose that laptop because of its beautiful screen colors and wide angle view.

It is perfect for what I bought it for : Watching YouTube outside at night.

Anyway, thanks to all for the answers. ????

  17. i have a recent (March 2020) 15.6" BINAI laptop (13k THB) ordered from China.

    Beautiful screen but no guarantee.

It just crashed watching YouTube and on reboot wouldn't go past the BIOS setup page,

Internet search suggest try taking batteries out for 15' and hopefully the problem will be fixed.

No repair shop in my village so I'll have to take it to Ubon sometime later.

Anybody has had such a problem before?

There is a great driver we used on several occasions to drive throughout Thailand and his driving skills are impeccable. Never once did we feel scared during our trips with Sutthi and he is the consummate professional. We toured from chiang mai up to maehongson and even with the 1000's of twisting turning curves never did we feel scared. Sutthi speaks excellent english and has a great sense of humor. He is actually from Khon Kaen and has a private tour company in chiang mai. He took us around in a very nice SUV and it was a very pleasureable experience. He can be reached at his email address: [email protected] or his cell phone: +66 899534407 or +66 876608955. His name is Sutthi Hampitak and the name of his tour company is chiang mai driver guide.  He was also very reasonable in his prices when we utilized his services.  Good Luck

    Very helpful. Thank you.

  19. Ts there a newsstand in Ubon where I can buy a newspaper? Any newspaper - Thai or farang.

In my Isaan village there is none. I'll be going to Ubon in a week or so.

I have received my yearly pension "Life Certificate" form and need to have it certified in person at the Belgian Consulate in BKK.

This tear of Covid19 I prefer to do it by mail.

The Belgian Consulate will accept to certify it without my being present if I join a picture of me holding a current dated newspaper to my demand.

  20. Have Chuwi tablet. No problem with latest update.

But these Win10 updates can indeed cause problems.

The previous update made my HP desk computer mute, not recognizing any sort of plugged-in speakers/headphone.

Had to do a Restore to before update to regain sound.

I'll have to try the present update! but fear getting the same problem.  ????
