  1. I should clarify this comment - there are three minor and one larger sections of damage on the Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai Highway (118) - the largest however is on Highway 120 between Wang Nuea and Phayao (near the rest area called Dinasaur Park).

Are you sure? A colleague who I'd passed your earlier information to came across 120 this morning. Said there was no earthquake damage, only some construction near that viewpoint that is nothing to do with the earthquake.

Also, the reports in the media accompanying the pictures of major damage say Phan district which is at least 50 clicks north and the Wang Neau part of the road is actually in Lampang province.

  2. There is still a compound of bars next to the dirt parking lot. At least one of them proudly displays the square rainbow. I looked at buying at the Nightbazaar Condotel a few months ago, which is right behind the Foxy Lady building, alongside those bars.

This thread sure went in an unexpected direction.

Apparently those bars are no more, I heard they've moved to near Spicy behind the Jack Van Bar..... could be an interesting clash of cultures!xohmy.png.pagespeed.ic.shABmucp9T.png

this was an intersting article on the whole night bazaar a few months ago: Down at the Night Bazaar - A walk down memory lane Even has a picture of the old Paradise Bar at The peak for Dave2 smile.png

  3. Songkran has gone, leaving a somewhat depleted tea money chest. Chiang Mai (region 5) has a new Police chief. Meanwhile social order and night-life crackdowns have already started in Bangkok and Pattaya citing preparedness for ASEAN. And then there's the whole political thing too.

Could there be trouble ahead in Chiang Mai?

  4. Wikimapia has many of the areas in and around Chiang Mai delineated, although not all. This could be helpful: http://wikimapia.org/#lang=en&lat=18.773228&lon=98.988018&z=13&m=b

    Also, this information from Wikipedia:

The district of Chiang Mai is subdivided into 16 subdistricts (tambon), which are further subdivided into 77 villages (muban). The city (thesaban nakhon) Chiang Mai covers the tambon Si Phum, Phra Sing, Haiya, Chiang Moi, Chang Khlan, Wat Ket and Pa Tan, and parts of the tambon Chang Phueak, Suthep, Pa Daet, Nong Hoi, Tha Sala, Nong Pa Khrang and Fa Ham. There are further 3 townships (thesaban tambon) – Chang Phueak covers parts of the tambon Chang Phueak, and Mae Hia and Tha Sala the whole same-named tambon. There are further 6 tambon administrative organizations (TAO).

Interesting when compared to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Amphoe_Chiang_Mai.svg , which shows 25 Amphoe . Not sure which is correct or complete.

The list above are the 16 districts (Tambon) in Amphoe Muang Chiang Mai (Chiang Mai city and suburbs) the map shows the different Amphoe within Chiang Mai Province.

There is a useful interactive map here that might help the OP http://buy-chiangmai-property.com/properties/chiangmai-city-districts-map/

  5. In a national election, or local elections held nationally on the same day, the law makes more sense i.e. "in theory" it stops the voters getting drunk. But, when the election is just one tambon in a city, and all you have to do is walk across the road to get a drink in the next district, it's beyond absurd!

BTW, I was once told by the police that the reason the ban extends until midnight on voting day is to stop drunken people fighting over the result or disrupting the vote counting. In central Chiang Mai and other urban areas, foreigners in particular are annoyed by closed bars, when there is no real signs of problems. However, I gather that out in rural villages, drinking lao khao, and subsequent violence between supporters of different factions/families is quite common and can be a big problem.

My understanding is Sunday 30 March is the senate elections and, presumably dry for all of Chiang Mai. If it follows normal procedure that means next weekend will also be dry for pre-voting. Does anyone know for certain if this is correct?

  6. I was told once it's illegal to sell or transport large rocks, e.g. from rivers. Dunno if that's actually true, but it might explain why they are hard to find. Of course "illegal" is a relative term in Thailand anyway.

  7. Prefaced with the comment, I haven't been there for a couple of years:

Penang Mattress used to sell flat sheets in a range of cotton grades. They stocked them for hotels IIRC and have certainly purchased there at reasonable prices. On Atsadathon Rd at the intersection with Rattanakosin. i.e. heading into the city from JJ Market/Kamtieng its on the left hand side before the intersection:

Or 18.800068,98.995037 if the streetview link is a problem.

  8. It's also called Siri Wattana Market - IIRC that's what the signs say.

There's also another smaller food market a few hundred meters north of Kwang Sing intersection on Chottana Road that's about the same distance from you. Several of my Thai friends complain Thanin is expensive.

  9. BUMP! Just curious, anyone have an update on this?

I went past there today. Looks like construction ground to a halt sometime ago judging by the growth of vegetation. And "Differ" (the big club next door) seems to have expanded into the restaurant space from the old Playhouse.

No clues on their website or facebook page except an advert for a "Business Opportunity" rolleyes.gif.pagespeed.ce.hZ59UWKk-s.gif

  10. I can think of a couple of bars that are now in competition over who has the best "watching paint dry" party. At one event last week it got round to closing times and they found one of the rather elderly participants, who was being particularly quiet, had actually passed away during the event. Everyone had assumed he was just enjoying himself as much as everyone else. rolleyes.gif

If you really want fun, the weekly Tai Yai lao Khao drinking contests at Kanthieng have hotted up recently.w00t.gif

  11. Paagai: Do you remember how much those units went for in D'Vieng? I realize it's sold out completely (pretty amazing in itself) but what sort of money were they charging?

Sorry, Don't know. And all they have on their website (sansiri.com) is one page saying it's sold out. The artists impressions look cool though.
  12. 85 storey skyscraper that will be built there in 2027.

Current rate of building in Santitham it will be a lot sooner than 2027. High end projects are already starting to appear - D'Vieng Santitham for example (admittedly not a skyscraper) a sure sign of changing times. And sold out before construction started.

In twenty years, most of the low end dormitory condos being built now will have already been demolished and replaced with high end condos. Not that there will be many left after the 2018 earthquake that WTK omitted from his predictions wink.png I hope they don't allow skyscrapers though, anything over the current building heights would seriously spoil the city.

For me, retirement will be somewhere between Phayao and Laos! But that's still a way in the future.....

  13. At Khunagsing intersection (Chang Phuek/Superhighway) are a row of several shops selling every kind of lawnmower and other power tools and hardware imaginable. Dunno about mulching or non mulching but these would be the first places I'd try.

  14. we filed a written report the next day for assault, theft, tresspassing, harrassing, and customer invasion of privacy...cost us 10baht for a copy for ourselves.

thumbsup.gifclap2.gif Good for you! Standing up to them is the only way this will be stopped.

In the cm108 article I was amused by the irony expressed by one Thai poster that Khun "Ad" is wearing a fake Manchester United shirt cheesy.gif

Also, there is another video posted on there, if you run to the end - the YouTube suggestions for more videos come up with several more videos of this gang in action.

  15. Thanks to Pim of Citylife for becoming involved. This scam would have gone on forever otherwise. wai.gif

    clap2.gif I'll second that!

Interestingly, the cm108 article linked to above mentions more than once (according to Google translate........ wink.png ) that these guys were arrested on a warrant issued on 14 March, the day after the Citynews article. To me, that implies someone took action (victim, music company or the powers that be), i.e. these arrests were pre-planned which deserves a big thumbsup.gif to someone in Chiang Mai's finest for finally doing something. Whether anything comes of it, like compensations, fines and jail time is of course another matter, but at least it should keep them from harrasing people for some time, and send a clear message to other potential gangsters. Well, maybe, TIT.....
