No one is worth dying over or going to jail over.

Samruay was attacked in his own home by his wife's lover. At what point did he have the option to move on?

Shows that Thai sociopolitical-religious feudalism exists in even the most degraded of the polity. The sociological implications are fascinating and well deserve more treatment than trite comments.
Pity you didn't take the opportunity then, eh?

I see from the main article via the link, that the motorcy rider was found 80m behind the stopped BMW. To me, 80m seems a long braking distance following a major incident and may be an indication of the speed?
80m is between 60 and 70 mph. Judging from the photo, the BMW was in the right hand lane and the motorbike was in front. Car driver could be telling the truth.

If entering Visa Exempt, you may be asked to show 10K Baht worth of cash or travelers checks, plus a hotel-booking**, plus a flight-out leaving within 30-days.
** (maybe a letter from a Thai where you are staying - but I'd make a free booking)
If entering with a Visa, you may need to show 20K Baht worth of cash or travelers checks.
Do you think that they would check to see if you had a hotel booking? I doubt it. I'm sure if you just give the name of a hotel you would be OK, but as you say, a booking costs nothing.

More importantly I would hope that kids learn not to sit on train tracks.

The reasons to stay are becoming less. The cost of living is through the roof (particularly concerning raising children), pollution is record highs, traffic is terrible, infrastructure poor, sporting opportunities limited. The good parts are the Thai people, food and culture but the negatives are certainly weighing down the positives.
Im sure rural or less populous areas are better - but Bangkok sure has many negatives these days.
You forgot soon to be submerged.
