  1. You have to play by the rules to win, may not be faire but those are the rules. If they do not like them then perhaps this should be a reform to work on, rather than waste their energy on trying to boot an elected officially who has a popular mandate.

Perhaps they should have a no confidence vote as our distinguished parliment has? And yes PM Blair has called early elections if the truth be known as a confidence measure. Even Canada performed a similar measure as well, I've also seen it done in Japan. So as a practical matter this is literally done all the time. :o

Brit .... what has the Opposition parties and the PAD done NOT to play by the rules?

I don't think Blair has dissovled Parlaiment because of personal issues with any others. I know he didn't call a snap election with the rules that we have here in Thailand.

It's ideal for Thaksin right now .... no EC (practically) ... no NCCC ... control over broadcast media (at that time .. less so now) ... call a snap election with no way for people to switch sides due to the 90 day rule ... etc

His move was BRILLIANT ... (underhanded ... against the principal that was set for dissolving parlaiment etc). He was outplayed by his opposition though; If you sit down at a card table and see the cards stacked against you ... change games!

  2. "wide support" does not equal total support ... I see your point but there is limited space in one article ... it also addresses the lack of freedom of the press making the situation there problematic

As for "his own region" he's from Chiang Mai and has massive support in Isaan and lots in the west/central as well and a good portion of the south above Phuket

sorry about the double post ... GPRS burped

  4. Ok, if your looking for a pub atmosphere then try the londoner on Sukhumvit Soi 33, they brew their own beer and have a range of quality australian steaks including a huge t-bone.

If your looking for a more upmarket atmostphere try New York Steakhouse at JW Marriot on Sukhumvit road, right next to ploenchit center.

Tony Roma's do good steaks and ribs and they have a restaurant on Sukhumvit road and in the new part of the emporium food court.

The other place I would recommend is Outback Steakhouse in Discovery shopping center at Pathumwan. Its diagonally across from MBK and directly across from siam square.

If you want good beef done in the japanese style.. try chokchai steakhouse in siam square.

    Hope this helps..

I think you mean Kobe (Kobi?) as there is no Chokchai in Siam and they are not known for Japanese style

  5. Can anyone tell me if restaurants, shops etc are open during Songkran - April 13th to 15th?

    Thanks.

    L

Everything should be open as per normal during those dates (well, probably wetter than normal ! :o )

Apparently, the "official" date(s) for Songkran in Pattaya are the 18-19th of April.

Official dates are 13-15 ... Pattaya and a few other places celebrate on some odd days :-)

Almost everything will be open ... true that some mom and pop places in BKK may be closed ... but that's about it. ((maybe even a few farang owned places as some of the old codgers run away to Singapore))

  6. hmmm you'd be amazed what is online to read .... google Great works literature online .....

    read the NYT .....

but hel_l if you are that far away from civi .... make some friends online and plan weekend gettogethers some place .... your town ... or a short trip away ....

I run down to patters to talk to my best friend in Thailand 1 or 2 times a month .... and we chat online daily

    same with other friends ....

hel_l it aint just about "intellectual stimulation .... sometimes it's about getting stinking drunk with a friend!

  7. Life insurance certainly ....

I'd do a will that at the end of my days on this earth divided my assetts (all of them) ... amongst my kids ... leaving the insurance policy to the wife.
