  1. You have to learn fast here or get caught up and dragged down to the gutter levels of the skint no hoper loser that frequent many Pattaya bars, 99 baht all you can eat type of establishments etc etc.

Ive now cracked it and know of most, if not all, bars where customers are from the north of Watford, wear dirty vest tops, Soi Bua Khao market flip flops, look like Worzel Gummidge and are all in their words "millionaires" back wherever they are from..

Between them, collectively, there isn't enough brain cells to run a Duracell battery to a light a small pocket torch.

Everyone likes a deal but most of these cheap charlies are so thick their only conversation is where one can get something cheaper then somewhere else. We are not talking property or cars were talking shampoo 2 for the price of one, free toothpaste by collecting promotional samples from outside some shopping mall or where one can stuff ones fat face all day for a song.

There are tiny elements of truth in your prejudiced opinions, but one does not necessarily have to be be dim-witted, or uneducated to be frugal.

I would also suggest that not all of the ex-pats who frequent Soi Buckhaew are 'dirty vested' or sartorially challenged. You contradict your own argument by citing 'cheap shampoo and free toothpaste' as conversational asides by the 'gutter' people you so clearly detest.

I put it to you, 'safeandsound' that you are living in an ivory tower, are possibly the kind of person who kicks beggars out of the way and lives life banally contented; by repeating the mantra 'look after #1'.

    Pride comes before a fall.

  2. [That is a myth. I've been eating the offal from Carrefour for ages and it does not say pet food only etc. Plus it has the English language description: ie. Pigs feet, Pigs cheek, Lambs kidney etc. Cooked properly it is nutritious and full of goodness.

And the cholesterol (bad) level in most offal is off the chart. In very small quantities on rare occasions it probably won't hurt you (too much), but what you save in food bills from regular consumption will likely be more than offset in doctors' bills or shortened lifespan (but that may be another of Syd's Cheap Charlie ways to save money -- die earlier).

I have my cholesterol checked regularly and it is fine and there is zero heart disease in my family tree and I don't smoke tobacco. I don't think anyone should worry about eating offal.

Offal is the way to go. Latest news is that Carrefour had a fine offer on Pig's Uterus today, I didn't buy any because I was not sure how to cook it or what to cook it with or in fact how it tasted.

I did however buy a complete pigs tail for 28 baht, which should make a big stew that will last about five days, reheating on a daily basis. They had plenty of tripe on offer today but it looked unfresh.

Syd, guys with elevated bad (LDL) cholesterol levels should avoid eating offal on a regular basis. For many the liver over produces cholesterol naturally and the additional intake puts them over the top. Your instance of offal gobbling sounds like gifted genetics, you are fortunate. After reading the offal menu (utterus to sweetbreads) I am glad I am not so gifted but do an occassional liver and onions. By the way how the he_ll do you get 5 days of food from one pigs tail, add 16 litres of water and 10 cups of rice??? A pigs tail is hair, skin, ligaments and bone - you don't see too many pig tail steaks!! By day 5 they would have to hold me down and force feed me! :bah:

Naturally, I add potatoes and carrotts and marrowfat peas to the pig's tail stew.

The pig's tails sold at Carrefour have quite an appreciable amount of meat hidden deep in the orifices of the pig's nates and after persistent boiling, the goodness trickles out and provides nourishing and satisfying sustenance.

  3. It is much simpler to go to McDonalds. In Thailand, the beef is pretty much the same (low) quality and Mickey Ds is quite a bit cheaper.

    I agree 100%.

I just don't understand why B.K. is so much more expensive than McD. Is it because they produce flame grilled burgers?

On the odd occassion when I have beer googles welded on I get the super extra big McD burger and then retire to bed with antacid tablets and a pint of water.

  4. The easiest is Kasikorn Bank on Pattaya Tai next to Tuk Com.

SCB half way down Jomtien Beach Road is tourist friendly.

Avoid Krung Thai Bank, no interest for farang.

I have heard great things about TMB in Pattaya Royal Garden but will it go bust?

Also the yellow bank Ayyuthaya is tourist friendly in some branches.

Forget absolutely Bangkok Bank. There are so many rip-offs going on. Like the Dutch guy who had 1/2 million baht withdrawn on one ATM transaction!!

  5. Decided to give a try, just finished eating.

Ordered 2 lots of chicken samosa not bad, little spicey but good,

4 popperdoms tasty, did not get any Raita, onions etc,I did expect it to be included.

1 chicken korma & 1 butter chicken, way way way too salty, even the wife turned her nose up at it,also mainly bones only 4 pieces per portion, tasty but disappointed at 150 baht per portion

    4 naan breads ok

total of 670 Baht, would not go back again, my 2cents worth! But you never know until you try.

Give it another go, and try some different curries. No need for 4 naans.

  6. I got a good Mitsubishi from Big C Pattaya 2nd Road for around 800 baht and it has being going strong for many years now.

Avoid Sanyo fans like the plague.

  8. A plastic wrapped slice of cheese can be purchased at any supermarket for approx 80 baht per pack of 12.

That equates to about 7 baht per slice.

Simply take a cheese slice with you to the B.K., but wrap it in newspaper a few times to keep it cool and then discreetly slip it out of your pocket and on to your burger.

Over time you will save a fortune.

  9. I would like to share with everyone the fact that Carrefour (Pattaya Klang) has the best refrigerated section of offal in Pattaya.

Everything can be found here, tripe, intestines, pigs feet, sweetbreads, pig's snouts, kidney, liver, brains, everything.

It is all priced very cheap and I bought a delicious Pigs Cheek for 20 baht that after cooking was good for three hearty meals.

Offal is the way to go.

This is where you really should be able to read Thai.

The sign says "Pet Food only - Not fit for human consumption!"

If you can figure out the "tripe, intestines, pigs feet, sweetbreads, pig's snouts, kidney, liver, brains" part (regardless of the language in which it is written), the "not fit for human consumption!" part should be obvious! (I can only imagine what the "everything" else might include). There is a line below which one should not cross and certainly not to save a few Baht. You have surely crossed that line. The thread should be renamed from "Cheap Charlies" to "Disgusting Daves".

  11. Hi Trying to buy hydrogen peroxide, it for human consumption (diluted of course).

Looking for pure H202, food quality 35% concentration.

If you are curious its for a home remedy, mild oxygen therapy, 8 drops of H2O2, quarter teaspoon of bicarb in a water bottle, taken on an empty stomach between meals. Oxygenates the blood, raises your PH. Optimal consumption concentration is .45% H2O2.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Nothing taken orally alters the pH of the blood --

The pH of the blood can be raised by taking Sodium Bicarbonate solution for example. In fact using too much Sodium Bicarbonate for treatment of indigestion and acid stomach can lead to alkalosis.

If you are going to save B1000 per month buying Red Horse, that is 22 cases a month @ 6% alcohol, how do you even manage to find your way home, much less the liquor section at Carrefour?

25 cases per month as a rule, but some beer is for visiting friends/family not all for me, but I tend to be a steady drinker throughout waking hours rather than a binge drinker intent on getting drunk in say 4-5 hours.

I hope you save all the empty bottles, place them back in the box,and them take them to the local recycling yard, so you can get some money back :)

I used to do that with all the old newspapers, beer bottles, aliminuim beer cans, coke cans, plastic eveain bottles etc etc saved over a couple of months out of the house, used to get an average 100 to 150 bt back, sad innit :D

Yes: 12 Bottles in good condition (large)= 8 baht

    Yes: 10 kg of paper= 7 baht

  13. Some tips to live as a cheap charlie in Pattaya, Part I:

    1. Forget about renting a room , just get a cardboard box and sleep under the flyover at the base of Thappaya road or at similar locations;

    2. There is no charge to wash in the sea, I recommend Pattaya beach and you can shit in the water(everyone else does);

    3.But if you want a bit of luxury can use the public toilets in the likes of Royal Garden, Central etc, and there is nothing to pay;

    4. Spend your day in the free air conditioning of the shopping malls;

    5. Food halls in the aforesaid shopping places have many customers leaving plates with food on them, so you can eat for free.

-Forget baht buses as easy to walk to all the destinations listed above.

Part 2, my guide to cheap charlie free sex follows later.

    Although I suspect your tips, # 1 & 2 are jokes, your tips 3,4, & 5 have a serious logical sense.

I often use the toilets in Royal Garden because they are clean and have toilet tissue for free and liquid soap and hand dryers and it saves arguments with the Mrs. regarding unpleasant bathroom odours following Red Horse beer and cheap Thai food.

I am not alone in killing a few hours sitting on the wooden benches in Shopping Malls reading newspapers/magazines/paperback books in the hot months, before meeting friends in local bars.

As far as eating peoples scraps; that is more for the down-and-out rather than 'Cheap Charlies' like myself. I have witnessed such behaviour and I am sure that the food is esculent, but I won't be doing that until the baht is less than 40 to the British Pound.

  14. Follow up post regarding my post above # 30

The Jomtien Immigration on Soi 5 is open from 0830-1630 but be aware that for visa extensions using TM7 form and 1900 baht you will not be given a ticket to be seen from 1130-1300

I accompanied my brother-in-law to the office at 1145 and the officer at the information point was eating his lunch in full view of customers and was very abrupt in manner when a 'numbered ticket' was requested.

I think people 'signing-on' for 90 days can do so during their 'lunch break'.

Other than that a very fast and efficient service. A return at 1300 and job done by 1325.

So my message would be, don't assume that because the office is actually open 8 hours straight, visa extensions can be done anytime.

  16. If you go to www.pattayamail.com scroll down the left side and click on ALL BACK ISSUES. Go to the back issue for 10 - 16 September, # 37 and click on DINING OUT AND ENTERTAINMENT and they are doing a review of the Chirpy. I think the article mentions when the Ch**ky will be opening.

It does not mention an opening date in the article.

    Thanks! :annoyed:

They said very soon on September 12th?

  17. Following complaints from many quarters the picture of the hanged victim has been removed from the PDN website.

Many speculators suggest that the hanging was staged because of an upturned plastic chair (which with their logic was not needed). But the chair was needed: To affix and secure the noose to the TV bracket and for the final insertion of the head into the noose.

The television wall bracket was affixed to the wall quite high up.

    RIP Mister Verrieres.

  18. I think that this is a genuine suicide and that there is no foul play.

A girl hanged herself in my apartment block and half her body was touching the ground, depending on the person unconsciousness can develop quickly.

Also, the opportunist use of close-at-hand materials (eg. TV wall bracket and bed linen) is typical of a depression related impulse suicide.

    Condolences to friends and family.

  19. My best friend in the States was a drunk. I looked at his hands, they were swollen. Hate to think what the rest of his body looked like, particularly his pickled brain.

Great guy, though. Could play drums until he fell over - a cymbolic jesture (pun intended). He looked 15 years older that his age. Died young. Bye bye Bobbie.

Nothing cute about drinking alcoholic beverages.

....and yes I know, I'm not the one you'd pick to go bar crawling, at 6 am or any other time. Am no fun for that.

At 6 am, I'm getting up from a comfy night's sleep, I eat a healthy light breakfast, then go out the the Rock Climbing park I'm developing to meet my hill tribe friends, and we get to work. It's invigorating and enjoyable - with a few frustrations thrown in for good measure. I'm not in to self-affliction. I take care of my body and so should you. I hope you're not the one at the wheel of the car that smashes in to a loved one of mine. I'll let you know up front, I don't tender any excuses whatsoever for idiotic/harmful things done while drunk.

i have a swollen belly known by the medical latin term ' biggus beerguttus "

Be sure to check that it's not ascites.
