Unless they're related to her by blood, she won't really care about them.
Thais only really care for relatives, but they have many superficial relationships with people they borrow/lend money from/to.
She does have a very large family tree. I've taught her to neither a borrower nor a lender be. Give if you like, but don't give me that borrow BS.
We've toured around Thailand a lot, and it's incredible how we will be in any town or city, and there will be someone there she knows by blood or by Facebook.
My wife puts up with family but her true friends are not to be found within the confines of family.

There are so many variables to consider when talking about friendships in Thailand. Age, where you come from, location, relationship status, work status, time in country, language proficiency, financial status, interests, personality, looks and various other things which tend to change over time.
It makes a difference if you moved around a lot or grew up in one place with childhood friends you are still in contact with. My Thailand adventure started in my early 20s and I will be 66 in a couple months. Things have change over the years and relationships have come and gone. This is not a good place if you need consistency and don't do well with change.
I have come to terms with this being a very transient place where other foreigners come and go. To that end my Thai friendships have tended to last longer. Finding friendship here is not the same for everyone and we are all responsible for the choices we make.
Personally I have never understood the whole idea of leaning on friends. I want to show support and share good times with my friends and I would never want to be a burden to them by asking for anything.

I don't see it as strange at all. One reason there isn't more going on between Chiang Rai and Chiang Khong is because the road system is not adequate. They built a new bridge over the Mekong, there are plans for a rail line to Chiang Khong and they have already converted most of the road from Chiang Khong to Thoeng from two lane to divided highway.
Planners are looking to the future, not the past, and taking it one step at a time. People argued against the East and West bypass roads but they get more use everyday. I am not saying there is no corruption but that is no reason to do nothing, in my opinion.

The simple fact is that, despite all the informed/educated speculation, there is no way to know with any accuracy when countries will end the social/medical measures, or to what degree they will be eased/dropped, what the interaction(s) will look like on a global scale (this virus is NOT a local phenomenon) and how things will look if/when it finally occurs. In light of that, I am unable to speculate/project/make educated guesses/etc about what will come next, so I don't really try. I just hope that those in authority, in Thailand and beyond, make the best possible decisions and that we all get out from this sooner rather than later and in one piece.
My thoughts exactly.????

I believe this highway is supposed to connect to China, is that correct?
This is more of a local connect from Chiang Kong to Chiang Rai, in my opinion, but in theory there will be trucks moving commodities over the Lao border and into Thailand.
The existing routes are mainly two lane and go through many villages.

I don't see it as a case of paranoia but one of existing rules and regulations. When there are restrictions in place for a reason, it makes no sense to make exceptions for anyone who asks. We are all supposed to stay home, not just some of us.

Thanks for very interesting pictures.
Is that the new AH3 highway near Ban Ta?
Where will it go to Khuntan, Phaya Mengrai seems a big road for such a small place?
It starts near the turnoff to go over Phaya Phipak heading to Phu Chi Fa. It misses Phayamengrai and heads to the intersection at Sop Pao. All I really need is the section from 1174 to Sop Pao as that will cut something like 6 km off my drive to town. The sections that are finished are really nice.

Cycling enthusiasts here in Chiang Rai and around the country will be sad to hear of the passing of Coach Piak, the owner of Northern Bike.

At another location on the Ing River the low water has made the building of a new bridge that much easier.

The roadwork near us is coming along nicely and will eventually make the drive to town much quicker. Much of the road is finished but the new bridge over the Ing River will take some time to complete.

Since I only live a few kilometers from the Ing River I thought I might pop over and take a few photos at our nearest bridge. We are 30+ km north of Thoeng where the articles photos were taken, I believe. While our water levels are quite low, the cows are still high up on the banks of the river where they always are but there were a couple of vehicles parked down by the waters edge. There was a large gathering of open billed storks enjoying the shallow waters.

I am an Apple man all the way. All my stuff is Apple and it all just works without having to tinker with it all the time. I don't mind the price because I own Apple stock and have made a bundle.????

Where does the pollution in Chang Rai come from?
It is a complicated subject and this is probably not the right place to cover it but I can give you my take on it. There are several sources of pollution in Thailand including transportation, industrial, power generation, corporate sponsored agriculture like corn and sugar, burning of rice fields and the waste from fruit orchards after pruning, and then there are the forest fires which are purposely started for various reasons like mushrooms or clearing land for more crops. Recently it has been the forrest fires which have been the most problematic in my area.
Fortunately there has been a much more vocal outcry on Thai social media this year which over time I believe will bring results.

Conditions are not perfect but they are good enough that my wife is lobbying for another hike today. For me the benefits of a couple hours out on the trails outweigh the discomfort of heat and elevated pm2.5. An unexpected benefit of this social isolation has been the loss of 3 kg so far. That has me back to my pre-holiday weight after all the social eating which goes on during that time of year.

Getting back on topic, this is all starting to feel pretty normal. We make adjustments, find things to do and settle into new routines. Things we thought necessary can sometimes fade from focus as we find we can survive without them.
A healthy body and healthy relationships take on a new importance. There is something to be said for old fashion ideals like love and companionship. A bit of land and a comfortable place to lay your head far from the crowded cities really feels special these days.????

I also like the way you fight your corner even tho' we have clashed on occassion..but I know when to give credit where it is due.
(Perhaps "fight" is the wrong word..????)
I don't want to pile on after Charlie's assault but whatever you think has transpired between us, it wasn't enough to even register on my radar.???? Then again I have experienced some truly memorable individuals over the years.????

@Odysseus123I last heard from Geronimo on March 24. He sounded in good spirits. I like his positive vibe.

We had torrential winds and rain up north in parts of Chiang Rai. Air was much better this morning so perhaps you are getting some of the benefits of our storm.

We got good storm at 0100 this morning near Phayao. Heavy rain for 30 minutes. We had no wind or electric outage.
11 minutes ago, sceadugenga said:No rain here, a couple of spits when the storm came through about 6pm but the main cloud was just to the north.
It was so intense here in Phayamengrai I was hoping everyone got some but as usual it only hit certain areas. The yard is a real mess today but it was worth it.????

The black out must have been right across the province, we were out for about 6 hours.
We had a second outage around 5am which I suspect was local, as it lasted for less than an hour. The first thing I checked this morning was my internet and I was relieved to find everything up to speed. ????
