True Story: Just the other day I told a friend, "If they offered me free rent ... I would not live In Chiang Rai / Chiang Mai. You need to check the air quality In Bangkok .. especially near the river. Better than most larger cities around the world, and lot of small ones too! You enjoy being prisoner to some of the worst air on the planet. By the way, did you know we go for walks here in Bangkok too? Difference being, there are so many places to go! LOVE BKK
That's cool, I lived in Bangkok for 30 years and still enjoy brief visits.
We actually do a great deal of walking when we are there, getting to train stations and walking around shopping malls but there is a shortage of mountains and natural landscapes, free of people. Our Bangkok friends do seem to be struggling with the present situation more than we are here in the North. Our friends back in Hawaii seem to be living on another planet.
I don't love the air quality this time of year but it does fluctuate during the day so if you pick your times you can still enjoy a bit of nature.????

Sorry, don't take this personal and you are totally entitled to you opinion. But I just couldn't help noticing how much your comment contradicts your .sig file.

Thank you. I am not worried and understand some people are just happier being unhappy and criticizing those who are happy.????

No panic buying in Phuket so far so why the superior attitude?
I just enjoy living in Chiang Rai. Glad to hear things are good in Phuket, too.

And look at historical datas. Good luck (not health) with that...
I think all of us who live here full-time are well aware of air quality and make adjustments to our lifestyle, accordingly.????

"We" as in all of us who live here, not just "Me". I was hoping others would have their own anecdotal stories to share, of life in Chiang Rai during these troubling times.????
It just seems to me there are much worse places to ride out this world hysteria. Yes it was hot today but there was a good breeze which made it bearable.

My wife insisted on a shopping trip to town on Monday to top up our supplies. No shortage of stock at Makro or Tops so we are good if we need to stay home for a spell. We have recently stopped going to the gym and dinning out but there is plenty to do at home and when we really need to get out there is always a hike to the dam or a drive in the country. The pollution levels were a bit more tolerable today so we left our filtered and air conditioned comfort to enjoy a 10 km hike in the hills near our house.
While people in the city are freaking out and hoarding, things up here seem to be close to normal with just a hint of social distancing. I sure wouldn't want to be stuck in a tiny apartment in Bangkok with gyms, restaurants and entertainment venues closing down. Chiang Rai is always a great place to live but with all this virus panic, it seems particularly attractive. Now if we could get some wind and rain to help improve air quality a bit more, I would be ecstatic.

Hey, a 50% overnight reduction in the house, according to my PM 2.5 monitor, is nothing to laugh at. It is not perfect but it is a lot better, in my opinion.
Admittedly, recent hazardous levels have sorely tested, though not completely dimmed, VF's cheerful, optimistic glow.????

No rain at our place but the air is a lot better today after some wind last night.

I am a fan of blue skies too but one reason I love them is the fact the do not present 365 days a year. Our local reservoir is different everyday.

This AirPollution in Indochina is getting worse each year.
So, let it be, let it be?
Dear Mr villagefarang,
I didn't hear an answer.
I am not convinced there is an answer. The virus seems to have made an impact on pollution in China but I am not sure that is the way to go.
That is it for me tonight. It is my bedtime.????

I plan on staying put until this blows over. Not worried about the virus but I don't want to get caught up in some quarantine.

Agreed with this, 100 % Mr villagefarang.
But isn't there more we - The Aliens could do?
You are more than welcome to do whatever makes you feel better. I may not believe it will make any difference but I am not about to tell you what you "must" do, like some people.
I am the type who adapts to the weather, heat, cold, wind, rain, I just adapt. It might make a person feel better to complain but it doesn't change the weather, in my opinion.
It is also my belief that nobody likes a foreigner or outsider telling them what to do, especially when they weren't asked in the first place. I am not saying I am right and someone else is wrong. I have simply found a way which works for me and I am open to allowing others the same freedom.
Glad you liked my photos but not sure how relevant that is to this topic.????

I tend to be pragmatic and don't get hysterical about stuff I can't control. I don't seem to be prone to the flu and we don't live close to town so I am not overly concerned about getting the virus. Most of the stuff I touch isn't touched by a lot of people, mainly just my wife. I don't care to travel right now, though, as I wouldn't want to get caught up in a quarantine.

Definitely been bad the last couple of days. Our meter was flashing red in the house for the first time and when I took it outside, the number climbed another 100 points to a peak of 270.
Our filter usually brings air quality down to single digits but now I feel lucky to see something in the 30s. Hope it doesn't stay this way much longer but it is not looking good.
Some have left in search of a cleaner environment but this is home for us so we just plan to make the best of a bad situation and really enjoy the good times.

I am partial to people who are polite, attractive, athletic, intelligent, articulate, openminded, and have enough money to pay their own way and don't always have to ask how much things cost. I guess that makes me a fan of those who are abnormal.????

I always enjoy a well written stroll down memory lane by another old-timer. I too studied at AUA, and taught there as well, in the late 70s but I seem to remember I started off at 50 baht an hour and got my visa from an army school. Later, when a work permit was required they provided that too.
I also inherited some Japanese housewives when a friend of mine moved to the Philippines but I taught them in my apartment. My friend had been providing additional services to these lonely women but I found them a bit old and unattractive for my taste.
I only taught for a few years and never had any interest in education, other than my own, after that. Even much later in life when my wife was getting her university degree, I provided little more than emotional support. I wanted her to know she had done it all on her own. When she graduated at the top of her class she was justifiably proud of her achievement.
Patpong was an excellent place to practice ones language skills in the old days while sipping on a 20 baht orange juice, even when the town shut down at midnight due to the lates coup or attempt. During those early years I probably spoke Thai 90% of the time and watched double features on lazy afternoons at some pretty disgusting old theaters, which helped with listening and vocabulary. I have zero interest, or ability, in translation but my spoken Thai is still pretty good, and I must agree that those of us with a better than average grasp of Thai are still in the minority here in Thailand.????

I understand that destitute, miserable, mistreated and misunderstood sells better on TVF but I am speaking to the silent majority who actually live good lives here in Thailand.????
