  1. Um... due to fly into bangkok tomorrow from Chiang Mai.. Anybody know a way to find out if the airports are back in business? Or if there are any flights?? I am flying Air Asia and have been trying to get through their Malaysian hotline number for ages with no luck. Was at the airport at CM asking them today and all they could tell me was call Bangkok...

Not much help when you consider there are many others having the same problems as myself.

Dont think I would want to return to the airport again if this is still happening...

  2. This is the reply I recieved from Australalian Customs today...

Thanks for all the information... Some pretty good facts there...

    Dear John

Tiger balm is allowed into Australia as it is only a brand name, but Tiger bone products are prohibited as tigers are endangered species.

Please check if Tiger balm contains any product derived from tigers or not before importing it.

Please dont hesitate to contact us if you have any further queries regarding this matter.

    Thanks and best regards,

  14. sorry if I`m wrong but I think it 5pm not 6pm??

Last year I was with a thai friend andd we tried to cross the border from Mae Sai to Burma at about 5.30pm and although my thai friend was allowed to still go across I was told as a farang that the gate was closed at 5pm. Is it 5pm for farang and 6pm for Thai People or were they just trying to make some pocket money?? Although at the time it was annoying, looking at it now it is just one of my funny memorys from this wonderful place...

Many thanks for everybodys replies. :o

  15. Im staying in Thailand for about 40 days. What I ned to know is this.... after reading that I can only stay a maximum of 30 days. Is it just a simple case of going to the Mae Sai border and leave Thailand into Burma paying the 500 Baht entry fee. Look around the markets on the other side and then coming back across. Does it matter if I only stay on the Burma side for maybe 1 -2 hours?? or do I need to stay longer?? Please help a SillyBilly.

  16. Looking at travelling towards Nong Kwai and Loas later this year. Would anybody have an idea how much to budget for per day.. The 2 of us would probaly stay in a guesthouse and eat the every day food that the locals would eat. We would probably do a couple of tours as well as a little bit of shopping...

Sure we understand that different people spend different amounts but if somebody could provide approx costs of acommidation, food, transport etc... all this would be helpful

    Thanks everybody...

Well I'll give you a quick run down on Laos:

Accomodation: Between $10-$20 will cover a decent enough room with Aircon, obviously high end will be better. You can easily find rooms for $5-$10 however these won't have aircon and at the lower end no have a toilet or shower in the room.

Food: If you go truly local and avoid Mekong eateries and go for noodle soup shops then a bowl of this is less than $1, depending on how local you want to go you can easily survive on less than $5. However eating down the mekong road with a few beers you should budget around $10 a day. Example one of the main bars for holiday folks (& locals) Kop Jai Deu the average meal is around $3 add a beer $1.5 = $4.50.

Shopping: Hmm well it depends on what you want buy! You have the new and old morning market, the new Chinese market (which is great!) and everything in between. Everywhere you get - barter - especially with when they are chinese often if you barter well you'll pay half the price!! They are sneaky buggers for trying to overcharge you - the Lao people aren't quite as bad but they will try it!

Transport: Tuk Tuks are the main way around for those without transport - everything more than 20,000kip in Vientiane and you're being conned! Lesson - know where you want to go and the general idea of distance and don't accept the figure. Otherwise hire a motorbike for about $6-$10 per day and get around easy or if you feel like punishment hire a push bike!! :o

If you can speak Lao or Thai then you'll get around a lot easier than if you can't, Laos doesn't have as many English speakers around as Thailand even in main areas, shops or banks etc.

    :D

Many thanks for the reply.... Now I have a better understanding of what to expect.

  19. Thanks for the words of wisdom. It was a friend I met while on holidays and I have been told the news by his family. However I am not sure if he was Buddist or not. I`m sitting here at home in Aust trying to think of any way that I might be able to help the family. Upon returning to Thailand is there a way to pay my respects??
