‘He spat at me . . . I was dishonoured’
A runaway police officer who had gone into hiding for more than one month surrendered yesterday and pled guilty to killing two British tourists, one in a fit of rage and the other by accident.
Senior Sgt-Major Somchai Wisetsing was accused of shooting Adam Lloyd, 25, and then running down his girlfriend, 24-year-old Vanessa Arscott, and shooting her dead on September 9.
“I was so shocked that I fled to find time to think,” the law enforcer-turned suspect said yesterday.
Somchai, a Kanchanaburi policeman, claimed that he just intended to stop Lloyd and his girlfriend from quarrelling.
According to the suspect, his victims were already arguing when they entered his restaurant and continued to do so for the entire time they were having drinks.
He insisted that he did not know the couple before, refuting speculation that a love triangle might have been the motive for the murders. Some earlier reports said that Somchai had been drinking with them prior to the crime.
“I didn’t know what they were quarrelling about because I had many other customers to take care of, but when I was about to go home, I noticed that they were still arguing outside my restaurant,” Somchai said.
He claimed he then decided to present himself as a police officer in the hopes of ending their dispute.
“But the man punched and kicked me,” he said, adding that he suffered a broken nose and cracked rib in Lloyd’s alleged assault.
Somchai said he ran around his car in an attempt to get away from Lloyd.
“The man came at me and spat in my face. That was the last straw. I was dishonoured,” he said.
Somchai said he drew his gun and fired at Lloyd until his bullets ran out.
“I reckon that some strays hit the woman too but I didn’t notice that her body was dragged along by my car when I sped away from the scene,” Somchai said.
Following the attacks, the runaway police officer fled into Burma. He later contacted lawyer Somsak Toraksa, one of his acquaintances, to arrange his surrender.
An investigator, who asked not to be named, said Somchai was able to live with Karen soldiers in Burma thanks to assistance from an influential person’s son.
“When he contacted me, I persuaded him to surrender for the sake of our country’s reputation,” Somsak said.
Somchai yesterday showed up at the border at Three Pagodas Pass in Sangkhla Buri district, and was picked up by police officers accompanied by Somsak at 6.45am.
The suspect was interrogated until 8am, after which he met with reporters. He later flew on a military helicopter to a main police station in Muang district.
Provincial Police Region 7 deputy commissioner Maj-General Chalong Sonjai said Somchai’s crimes had damaged the country’s reputation but his surrender would heal the wound somewhat.
“He will face further investigations,” he said.
British Embassy charge d'affaires Andy Pearce was reportedly present during Somchai’s interrogation.
“We thank all our Thai friends who were involved with this case who gave their full support and cooperation, including the Thai prime minister and the Foreign Ministry who paid full attention to it,” said Pearce.
On Monday, a senior police officer disclosed that the British ambassador would visit Kanchanaburi this week for an update on the manhunt for Somchai.
Kanchanaburi Governor Cherdwit Ritprasart yesterday said relevant officials were doing everything to ensure safety in the province. “Tourists can visit our province safely. Don’t be worried,” he said. The province is a popular tourist destination.
Meanwhile, Tourism Police Commander Maj-General Phanya Mamen expressed doubts about Somchai’s version of the story.
“We know Somchai was very drunk that night,” Phanya said, referring to a blood test administered to Somchai at a hospital he visited after his beating.

Yes Mr 12Call, it is a good topic which concerns a lot of expats.
It is a pity to see how much talent gets lost.
Many expats live in their past because the present doesn't offer any challenge.
Like Arabs in Europe and Asians in Australia they constituate their own communities. There is very little assimilation into Thai society. Many live therefore under permanent stress.
The common denominator of the members of the foreign community seems to be a rather exagerated way of consuming alcoholic beverages.
I am not talking about the working class among them, but the retired section.
The retired section mostly retired here in Thailand because of the fact that it is easier to find a female partner in Thailand than in the home-country. They are too old, not handsome anymore and their often relative small pensions seem to have at least twice their value here.
In the beginning they feel like kings, many of them even develop a feeling of supremacy. They tell each other how intelligent they are by calling Thai people stupid etc etc etc. They look at each other, understand each other completely and raise their elbows.
They create a non-existing world in which they belong to the upper-class.
When they are sober during the morning hours they feel physically bad, nerveous and weak.
After some drinking they gain their superior position again, can discuss the worldpolitics again and can make fantastic jokes again. And the horrible thing is that they start to hire staff to do the garden, to clean the house, yes even to uphold a form of sexual activity.
Do it yourself lads! Try a little trip to a not far away place, where you, without loosing face, can walk and postpone your daily beer until the sun is gone!
It is actually rewarding. You become twice the person you are!
Very well presented Limbo.Interesting nic though!!!

No idea how many 'applicants' have sent a PM, but I know I have.
I'm about to start work, I have no desire to be a butterfly anymore and after Ning I could do with somebody a little older.
However, knowing Thai gals she'll probably feel more secure with somebody older so I'll have to settle for being her friend - which may not be such a bad thing.
That is, if Nathan get's back to me.
Boring.

I have a potential solution for you, in some space that I control on Soi Ruam Rudee, about 500 meters from Ploenchit BTS Station. The space is set up with wireless broadband - photocopier, air. Depends how much ambiance - and privacy - you want.
We would have to discuss furnishings. I can supply basic desk and chair - also maybe a file cabinet.
This space is not ideal, but if you are just looking for a quiet, confortable place to work for under 5,000 baht per month (no deposit), then this might work. I am not interested in passers-through for less than about four months commitment.
My existing tenants have "veto" power over new occupants, so dodgy operations are not welcome - nor are very high bandwidth usesr, who affect broadband speed for other users. If you work Mon-Fri, 9 to 5, your extra costs will be negligible. If you work nights and weekends, there will be extra cost to run air con just for you.
If interested in checking this out, contact me at [email protected].
Cheers!
Steve
Steve's suggestion sounds very good indeed at 5000 a month.

Amarka,
Thank you for your encouragement, my wife tells me she can get to the airport with no traffic in 15 minutes from that area.
She tells me the land is in "Rangsit." As you can tell there is a lot of trust in this relationship, or I am a total idiot... (please no replies on that)
They aren't seven houses, they are 7 town houses 2 floors high. So.... as you can tell it really is a speck of land.
But we hope this is one step towards the semi-retired life in Thailand.

Still no luck george. It may be yesterday's quantity of *chang*.
I'm back to receiving the return:

I think I'll head off to the pub and try again later or tomorrow.
Thanks anyway.
Cheers

Maybe she was the ONE Scamp!!!
Is it getting better
Or do you feel the same
Will it make it easier on you now
You got someone to blame
You say...
One love
One life
When it's one need
In the night
One love
We get to share it
Leaves you baby if you
Don't care for it
Did I disappoint you
Or leave a bad taste in your mouth
You act like you never had love
And you want me to go without
Well it's...
Too late
Tonight
To drag the past out into the light
We're one, but we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One...
Have you come here for forgiveness
Have you come tor raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus
To the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much
More than a lot
You gave me nothing
Now it's all I got
We're one
But we're not the same
Well we
Hurt each other
Then we do it again
You say
Love is a temple
Love a higher law
Love is a temple
Love the higher law
You ask me to enter
But then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on
To what you got
When all you got is hurt
One love
One blood
One life
You got to do what you should
One life
With each other
Sisters
Brothers
One life
But we're not the same
We get to
Carry each other
Carry each other
One...life
One

That Dusit Resort tip is a good one. I think it was all too hard for the travel agent to arrange. Talk to the Resort man and ask for a list of requirements at HKT. The loss of Guinness won't bother me ( bitter muck ), but the odd and occasional pissed Paddy can be a good laugh. Bring 'em on.

Does it bother you when your mobile rings ONCE from a known name in your address book and then stops? And then you receive a TEXT from that same known person requesting you to call them.
