This sounds very much like the famous millionaire Thomas White matter in which Mexican police invaded his home in Ensenada with a cadre of photographers and reporters and then accused him of pedophilia all the while being unable to develop any evidence to support the charge. However, with the payment of an extortionate amount of money to the police the matter would have been dropped. White has refused to pay so the police are holding him in jail until he does so. So where is your evidence to support your inflammatory statement?

How sad... but how many have been closed due the sight of soldiers killing people in the street? Thai men in plain clothes sporting some kind of silver badge on a chain around their neck. Saw two within the last week. One was quite fat and the other normal weight? No guns or anything else to make them look like regular cops. Blue jeans and sunglasses

Saw one around Ploenchit as I was going for lunch last week and another one today on Suk Soi 8.

They weren't hassling vendors or anything - and they weren't tourist police looking to fine people for dropping their butts. Any ideas?

Well, here is another opinion. I think that Phuket is just as much a shit hole as is Samui. There seems to be a national mentality to drive out the tourist trade from Thiland which will impair thousands of Thai who depend upon the industry. Corruption is part and parcel of the very fiber of Thailand as it is evident even in children playing in school. There is no hope for Thailand so the best advice is to enjoy it while you can. The country is beyond reforming itself. In a few years it will be declared a failed state. In the meantime let the thugs ruin Phuket and Samui completely killing the tourist trade. Only then will they have each other to exploit and perhaps it will lead to them killing each other over crumbs.

This is scary and tragic...and I'm trying not to laugh that someone had the gall to charge for a sunbed to lay down on while her arteries were pulsing thick red blood all over the beach. Its true too that these monkeys don't take kindly to being 'shooed' away and are more likely to react by showing their large sharp teeth and moving towrds you rather than away. I heard about this from my GF more than a week ago. I said, no one has ever predicted an earthquake. They make predictions for that one may happen in the next twenty years or more, even those don't come true. Growing up in California, I've felt many earthquakes! You never know they're coming until you hear and feel them!

I grew up in California also and not even Cal Tech can predict earthquakes. Stupid people love to spread rumors.

Four of my farang/Thai couple friends have split this year (and it is only June!). The lazy and greedy syndrome of the Thai boy seems to be common in the explanations for the split. The only way to combat that is to be more selective in choosing a partner. Thai boys and girls are masters of deception and lying so you will need a crystal ball to help you do the selecting. And don't set yourself up for failure by granting every selfish "want" the boy demands. He does not need the latest mobile phone with all of the bells and whistles in order to make a call, nor an additional gold chain to show off to his drinking buddies on the beach, nor does he "need" to sleep until noon each day. If you permit it once, then just give up as you have pilloried yourself. A relationship with a Thai boy can be beautiful and there are scores of deserving boys in the population who do not have the boy bar mentality.

For Koh Samui, the best (quietish) beach is Choengmon (NE of the island) Lots of good restaurants and quite a few beach bungalows to choose from. Great beach and sheltered from the weather this time of year. Watersports catered for (and a few other things to keep you occupied for 3/4 days.)

Next good area/beach would be Maenam or Lamai. Lamai is cheaper but has some bars/clubs etc. A bit more sleezy too. Maenam is good but is a bit more dependant on the weather this time of year. Also less to do at Maenam.

Most of the other beaches are either reef or a bit isolated. Try and stay on the east for the best weather at this time.

Sorry, cannot help you on Phuket, but most people like Koh PhiPhi

Well, Phuket is a shit hole unless you love being threatened with a gun being held by a psychotic jet skit operator, beaten by a tuk tuk thug and severely overcharged for everything.

I think "we" need to be more thoughtful about this topic. It seems as if it's one where "we" believe everything is all black or white, and we oversimplify the situation.

Well, get a grip! It is patently clear that it was the red shirt who exercised the violence. Not unexpected either. Confidence in Thailand as a"safe destination " is disappearing quickly,the problem is that :

The only short-term hope is slash prices air/hotels to encourage tourists,but we will just have to wait & see how much damage there is and when is the best time to produce more long term strategies.

My experience in Thailand tells me that the tourism venues & traps will, in reaction to the tourist slump, RAISE PRICES! Greed reigns supreme in this country. The tourism thugs are constantly shooting themselves in the foot and blaming everyone else for their moronic and irrational behavior.
